Two Weeks in Japan – Episode Five: Day trip to Hiroshima, Peace Memorial Park, A-Bomb Dome, Miyajima

[Music] [Applause] now it’s getting more confusing what to do [Music] how you guys how do we get in there without getting soaked today we’re going to Hiroshima taking the Shinkansen there it should be I think a hour and a half or so of a train ride and then we’re just going to day trip it we’ll be back we’ll be heading back home in the evening we haven’t spent much time here in Kyoto station yet it’s really a beautiful station it’s the Noi and it’s the 87 817 so that sign says the Shinkansen ticket gate is on the second floor shinkansen is on the second woo it’s cool i’ll call it cold so we just scanned it in through the QR thing and they gave it spit out this ticket not sure what that is must be just our validation we’re going in this direction towards Hakata i guess we’re on track 13 up the escalator so a rumor is that my ancestors come from Hiroshima uh I don’t know too much more than that but my grandparents are from Japan lots of stuff here i don’t recognize [Music] everything’s wrapped like a gift waffles sound delicious oh the expo thing look at those i would use the word adorable
okay creepy
creepy so train is now up on the board the 101 there at 8:17 going to Hiroshima on track 13 these things come one after the other and they all leave and arrive right on time heat heat this side must be this side [Music] all right we’re here 1 hour and 1 hour and 40 minutes to get here this is so superior to air travel 1 hour 40 minutes downtown to downtown and you can show up 1 minute before your train leaves if you want [Music] we’re enjoying our coffee here in the non-smoking section smokers have their own little room there little aquarium terrarium they want to tear down
oh there’s the dome at 8:15 on the morning of August 6th 1945 the first atomic bomb used against humankind exploded about 600 m above Shima Hospital in Saiku Machi utterly destroying all people and property below it among the burned ruins stood skeletal remains of the Hiroshima perfeure perfectoral industrial promotion hall now the Abomb dome a grim reminder of what had been so it said the the walls of the of this particular building survived because the blast was directly above it so
they spread out
yeah somehow that maybe that meant that the blast was straight down on the walls the way walls are supposed to be loaded
okay and it didn’t have side a side blast maybe cuz in the picture it was apparent that everything around that building almost everything was completely destroyed right what is this thing here rose monument let’s go find out during World War II more than 3 million students over 12 years of age were mobilized for labor services throughout the country as a result more than 10,000 students were killed including some 6,000 killed by the time I’m not sure where we’re going but this looks like a good direction i think ultimately we’re looking for the museum [Music] so I read that the the bridges here there was a there’s a kind of a configuration of the bridges that was used as the target by the
Oh really
uh bombers
including that bridge right there
i’m not sure
oh that bridge exactly but then it they I guess they missed by a little bit cuz they hit that dome but I think accuracy
isn’t that important it’s
not important with atomic bombs turns out Back side of this and then
back side of fire and then when you get on this side figure out what this is that might be the museum there the elevated building there so this says this is a cenotap which I don’t know what it is but the senotap is marked by a large arch and is dedicated to those who lost their lives due to the nuclear bomb the peace flame lies beyond and has kept burning until the last of nuclear weapons have been dismantled so in front of in front of us is the peace memorial museum it’s a sobering exhibit of personal details artifacts and stories of the victims of the nuclear bombing oh that must be the entrance over there mhm
let’s go check it out today the 4th was
or Sunday was greenery day and today is observance of that day which is Monday is this Sunday or Saturday whatever day it was
it was a day
it’s being observed today and greenery day children’s day
greenery day is a holiday that came about to honor Emperor Showa’s love for the outdoors apparently something to that effect nature and I learned yesterday that the Emperor Showa is the same same person as Emperor Hirohito after a person after the emperor dies um he he takes on the name of the era that he of his leadership is that the dome right there guess so oh this must be the after photo wow huh he’s not happy that was [Music] good [Music] okay [Music] [Music] thank you [Music] what is it mr donut but that means this is leaving in 5 minutes so it’s 211 [Music] okay we’re on Miaima Island home of the famous floating Tori among other things maybe grab some lunch here we could have taken the uh ferry all the way from the peace memorial area but we thought it’d be faster to take the train and then a short boat but which circumvents the the body of water sort of but that’s not the case took very long not recommended so we’re on Mia Island this is nice deer here and there sort of got compressed on our day trip here and ran out of time so we’re going to have to make quick work of this island deer deer more deer hi dear now finally [Music] this island has a long history of as being a holy site of Shinto the uh island’s highest peak Mount Misen of his warship shipped by uh local people as early as the 6th century in 1168 Tada no Kiomorei the most powerful man in Japan during the end of the Han period selected the island as a site for the clan’s family shrine and built Isakushimi Shrine there we are that’s what information I was wondering so it’s Tyra no Kiomorei who uh who built this in 1168 so that there’s that the shrine there the Tor gate and then the shrine it is also in that area um also built over water so we’ll get to see that in a second this island is very picturesque you can tell it kind of developed a tourism following and they trimmed it out accordingly so 300 uh yen to access this area i guess this is all in high tide the water fills around these pilings which must look pretty neat hold on on the side [Music] like the show wow it seems mildly dangerous there’s different um Yeah this is pretty nice lift your head back that way i think so here shopping at the gift shop coffee shop [Music] that is a giant thing making machine what is it crispy cream donuts
they’re making advertised what do they call these things wow more machines what are they called maybe it says somewhere on the box that you just bought what they’re called it’s just starting to rain
yep
it was supposed to rain all day today and it never really rained until just now [Music] what oh because of rain too much water smells good definitely a interesting destination for a couple nights perhaps uh we were saying it reminds us of Catalina uh SAT question answer is Catalina is to Los Angeles as Moshima is to Hiroshima we’re heading back wish we had a little more time there i bet it would be a nice stayover place [Music] fore foreign foreign [Music] [Music] made it to Hiroshima station and man there’s There’s plenty of stuff to eat here sure quarter fail what [Music] heat heat heat heat heat heat heat up here okay it was a long day we’re back in Kyoto saw a lot of stuff today
