five we have the Kyushu National Museum in Fukuoka Just past the famous Desaien Mangu Shrine you’ll find a tunnel of rainbow lights that leads to this stunning museum designed to look like the waves of the Genkai Sea One highlight they house over 200 rare works by Katsushika Hokusai including not his usual prints but powerful ink only pieces like the legendary Nishin Jazoo a fierce image of a lion meant to ward off evil Absolutely worth seeing in person Next up at number four is the Adachi Museum of Art in Sean Prefecture This town may have only 35,000 people but the museum welcomes over 550,000 visitors a year While the museum features beautiful works like autumn leaves by Yokoyama Taiken and pottery by Rosanjin Koji the real showstopper is the garden It’s been called the most beautiful Japanese garden in the country And when you see it you’ll understand why It’s like stepping into a living Nihonga painting The blend of dry landscape design and natural mountain scenery is just breathtaking Coming in at number three is the 21st century museum of contemporary art Kanazawa This museum is a modern art lover’s dream Housed in a circular glass building that’s as striking as the artwork inside The most famous piece the swimming pool by Leandro Erlic From above it looks like a normal pool but step underneath and you’re actually in it without getting wet It’s weird wonderful and super Instagrammable In second place we’ve got the Fukui Perfeural Dinosaur Museum Yes a dinosaur museum Take a 33 m long escalator down into the earth and you’ll be greeted by a life-sized animatronic Tyrannosaurus Over 90% of the fossils on display are real including an actual dinosaur mummy a brachalophosaurus a herbivore that lived in North America around 77 million years ago It’s considered one of the best preserved dinosaur fossils in the world A must for any Dino fan And finally drum roll please My number one favorite museum in Japan is the Tokyo National Museum Located in Weno Park this is Japan’s oldest and largest museum Founded in 1872 with over 120,000 artifacts including 89 national treasures and 649 important cultural properties it’s the perfect place to explore Japanese art and history Each building has a different focus The main gallery showcases traditional Japanese art The Heeken covers archaeology The Toyoken explores Asian art And the Gallery of Horuchi treasures holds sacred relics from one of Japan’s oldest temples And since the exhibitions are always rotating there’s something new to discover every time you visit So which one was your
