Japan: Luxury brand Imperial Hotel will open its fourth property in spring 2026, housed in the Yasaka Kaikan in Kyoto.

Originally built in 1936 by architect Tokusaburo Kimura, the Yasaka Kaikan was once a venue for theatre performances.

Led by Obayashi Corporation – the same Japanese construction company that built the Yasaka Kaikan – will see the building transformed into a 55-room hotel.

Many original features will be retained such as 16,387 exterior tiles, and  traditional Japanese techniques such as ikedori or “live capture” where materials are removed without damage for reuse, will be incorporated throughout.

When complete, the hotel will feature restaurants, a bar, and wellness facilities including a spa, swimming pool, and fitness centre.

“This is a unique property where over a millennium of Kyoto’s elegant cultural heritage enfolds the 135-year legacy of hospitality Imperial Hotel has carefully cultivated,” said Reiko Sakata, general manager of the Imperial Hotel, Kyoto. “With respect for the rich history of this location, my mission is to ensure a stay that is not only exceptional in quality but also leaves a lasting warmth in the hearts of our guests.”

In April 2025, the Imperial Hotel, Kyoto became a member of The Leading Hotels of the World.

The property is set for completion by October 2025 with a scheduled opening in spring 2026.

It joins other Imperial hotels in Tokyo, Osaka, and Kamikochi, and marks the first addition to the portfolio in three decades.
