TOKYO (Kyodo) — Tokyo stocks opened higher Thursday as heavyweight semiconductor-related issues tracked overnight gains by their U.S. counterparts.


In the first 15 minutes of trading, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average rose 258.26 points, or 0.66 percent, from Wednesday to 39,200.33. The broader Topix index was up 6.85 points, or 0.25 percent, at 2,789.09.


On the top-tier Prime Market, gainers were led by nonferrous metal, electric power and gas, and machinery issues.


At 9 a.m., the U.S. dollar fetched 144.89-90 yen compared with 145.21-31 yen in New York and 145.30-33 yen in Tokyo at 5 p.m. Wednesday.


The euro was quoted at $1.1683-1684 and 169.27-30 yen against $1.1655-1665 and 169.27-37 yen in New York and $1.1598-1600 and 168.54-58 yen in Tokyo late Wednesday afternoon.
