Hello, I’m your Korean Friend, YouKoF Today, I’m going to introduce you to the Fukuoka and Yufuin travel course. Fukuoka is only an hour from Korea, and it’s easy to get to the city from the airport by public transportation in 15 minutes, so it’s a great place to go with children and parents . Many people are looking for Fukuoka. If you go shopping in Fukuoka, eat delicious food, and go to nearby Yufuin to enjoy a hot spring, it’s a perfect trip. Now, I ‘ll start introducing a 3-night, 4-day travel course packed with shopping, delicious food, and things to do from Fukuoka to Yufuin. Here’s a map of the places I’ve been to and places worth visiting in Fukuoka ! I went to Daimyo Street, Canal City, Momochi Beach, and the Naka River area. You can capture it and take a look. We arrived at the airport around 9:00 because we had a morning flight. As soon as we arrived, we went to Tenjin Station. Since the subway wasn’t directly connected, I took a free shuttle bus to the domestic airport and then took the subway to Tenjin Station. When you get off at Tenjin, Daimyo Street is right nearby, which is one of the hottest shopping streets in Fukuoka. First, I stopped by Iwataya Department Store. Here, you can get a 5% discount coupon exclusively for tourists , and these days, you can save it as a mobile coupon, which is more convenient. After receiving the coupon, I got a QR code to stand in line at the Comme des Garçons store on the first floor . Since I was told that I had to wait over an hour to enter, I decided to go eat some gyukatsu first. I went to Motomura Gyukatsu, a famous gyukatsu restaurant . Since this is also a famous restaurant, waiting is a must. While waiting, I had a warm latte at Del Sol Cafe right in front . This cafe has really cute cat-shaped latte art. It was perfect for spending my waiting time at the cafe . Finally, it was my turn, so I went to eat gyukatsu. It was my first time eating gyukatsu, and it was so soft and crispy and delicious. They say fried shoes are delicious, but fried beef says it all! I decided to eat everything with my kids and do some shopping to help with digestion. There was a Supreme store and a Lecte vintage shop nearby, so I looked around. There are also brands like Stussy and Human Made nearby, so if you like shopping, definitely check them out. After window shopping, I went back to Iwataya Department Store and got a great deal on a Comme des Garçons short-sleeved T-shirt for about 60,000 won. Now it was time for the kids! I took a taxi and went to the Anpanman Museum. This place is a total kid’s paradise. There is an indoor playground with slides and sandboxes, an Anpanman experience zone, a goods shop, and a performance. The performance was in Japanese, but the kids had a great time because it was a simple story about defeating villains . Anpanman is actually an animation I watched when I was little. My kids liked it, but it was also fun because it brought back memories . I was able to take pictures and make happy memories with my kids . Now, the next destination is Canal City! This is a large shopping mall, and in addition to shopping, there are restaurants, cafes, brand shops, and fountain shows. There are many places to see , such as Sanrio shops, Disney shops, and ABC Mart, so if you like shopping, this is a place you should definitely visit. We went to the Kirby Cafe, which we had made a reservation for in advance. If you like Nintendo , this is a total recommendation. It’s hard to get in on the weekends without a reservation, so you definitely need to make a reservation in advance. Reservations open about a month in advance, so make sure to make a reservation in advance. We ordered the famous Kirby car cake, which was the most famous . The taste was average, but… the visuals were so cute that we were really satisfied. We took a certification shot and bought a Kirby doll as a souvenir. When we left the cafe, the music fountain show that takes place every 30 minutes had just started. We sat in front of the fountain in the center of the shopping mall and watched it, and it was cool and nice. After taking a short rest at the hotel, we came back out around 6:30 in the evening, just in time for sunset. This time, we took a bus and headed to Momochi Beach! This is a famous beach in Fukuoka close to the city center. Wow, look here, there’s a house on the sea! It’s really beautiful when the sunset is setting . We took pictures with the European-style buildings in the background, bought ice creams, and sat looking at the sunset . It was really healing. I recommend coming to Momochi Beach at sunset. There’s a restaurant nearby, so you can enjoy the sunset with a beer there . The last course is the Fukuoka Tower right in front of you! At 234m high, it ’s the tallest tower near the sea in Japan. You can see outside from inside, but you can’t see inside from outside because it’s made of reflective glass. It was built in 1989, but it’s still clean. You can see the night view of Fukuoka at a glance from here . It’s perfect if you come back after watching the sunset at Momochi Beach . I think it would be great to take a commemorative shot at the illumination photo zone . On the way back, we stopped by a convenience store, so-called Japanese convenience store raid , and had dinner . This is how we ended our first day in Fukuoka . Today is the second day. Today is the day we leave for Yufuin. I met my husband and in-laws who arrived a day late ! Today’s first breakfast is Sushi Sakaba Sashisu. It’s a sushi restaurant right in front of the coin lockers at Hakata Station . It’s a popular restaurant with a long line even before it opens . I ordered tuna sushi and shrimp sushi, and the ingredients were definitely fresh and the rice was just right. I ordered sweet egg sushi for the kids, and they enjoyed it. After filling our bellies, we went for a light walk and stopped by Sumiyoshi Shrine. This is one of the oldest shrines in Fukuoka, and is famous as a shrine that worships the god of navigation. The cute building and quiet atmosphere made it a perfect place to take a walk after dinner. After the walk, I walked to Yanagibashi Fish Market, but there was less to see than I thought and the weather was hot, so I quickly moved to Loco Works Café near the river . This cafe has a window seat where you can sit while looking out at the river . I was impressed by the strong acidity of the coffee beans that the owner seemed to have roasted himself . It was a perfect time to relax while drinking coffee while feeling the river breeze . I was slowly getting ready to go to Yufuin! I went back to Hakata Station and bought a **bento (lunch box)** to eat on the train. Ekiben is a must-have for Japanese train travel ! There is a separate ekiben specialty store inside Hakata Station, so there are many different types. Bento is much tastier and has more options if you choose it at the Hakata Station store than if you buy it on the train, so I recommend buying it 20-30 minutes before departure. And finally, I boarded the highlight of the day, Yufuin no Mori. This train is a tourist express train that takes about 2 hours and 14 minutes from Hakata to Yufuin. With its wide windows, wooden interior, and slow speed, it really enhances the feeling of travel. It is really important to reserve a good seat. The seats in the C and D rows on the right side of the train are the best for viewing the scenery, and in particular, the C and D seats in the first car are located at the very front of the train , so you can enjoy a panoramic view of the mountains, valleys, and waterfalls through the windshield and side windows . However, these seats are so popular that you have to reserve them right away at 10 AM, a month before the ticket opening. I also made a reservation a month in advance, but unfortunately I failed to get the first row. Still, it was nice to be in the first car, so I could see the open view toward the driver. The time I took out a bento box and took a leisurely look at the scenery outside the window while eating it on the train… It was really the fun of traveling. There is a cafe on the train, and there is also a space where you can take a commemorative photo wearing the driver’s uniform , so be sure to go. If you look at the scenery and take photos, 2 hours will pass by in no time. When I arrived at Yufuin Station, it was already 5 PM. Most of the shops were closed. Still, the scenery of Yufuin was truly special. It took about 10 minutes on foot from Yufuin Station to the Yadoya Ryokan we had booked . The road there was just like the Japanese countryside— quiet and peaceful alleys, trees and small streams, old houses, and just walking was healing. After arriving at the ryokan, we checked in, unpacked our bags , and headed to the large bath. Luckily, or maybe it was a time when there were few people, there was no one in the large bath. We enjoyed the hot spring leisurely , as if it were a private hot spring . There were yukatas prepared in the lobby on the first floor, so we changed into them right after washing up. Wearing the yukata really made me realize that I was on a trip to a Japanese ryokan. We also took a commemorative photo with our family. Now it was dinner time! The ryokan restaurant prepared a kaiseki course meal. We chose the sukiyaki course, and the kids ordered a separate kids’ menu. They served a variety of dishes, from sushi to fried food. The rich broth, tender meat texture, and a glass of Nama Beer (draft beer) made for a perfect dinner. After resting briefly in the room, we headed to the private hot spring that we had reserved . Yadoya Ryokan gives guests the opportunity to use the private hot spring twice a day, once a day, and we reserved the 9:30 PM hot spring. The hot spring was so cute and lovely that it felt a bit like ‘The Fairy and the Woodcutter’. We were able to relax and heal for an hour in the evening air where the stars were starting to rise one by one . The third day dawned. In the morning, as always… again! We started with the private hot spring. It was a hot spring with a different atmosphere from the one we visited yesterday , and you have to use one hot spring a day. We relaxed and started the day in a quiet atmosphere . Today was the day we were going back to Fukuoka, but we didn’t want to go right away, so we decided to take the 1-day tour bus that would take us to the Beppu Tour. We were scheduled to board the bus at 12:30, and the bus arrived around 9:30 , so we decided to load our luggage first and enjoy the rest of our Yufuin itinerary. Our first stop was Kinrinko Lake! The lake in the morning has a different charm. If you’re lucky, the water mist will rise, creating a truly dreamy atmosphere. Unfortunately, there was no mist , but we took a picture and took a quiet walk along the lakeside. Next, we headed to Floral Village! This place really looks like a fairy tale town. It feels like Totoro lives there. They also sell Ghibli goods, and there’s a Ghibli store on Yufuin’s main street , but somehow it feels better to buy something here, right? So we also bought a few Totoro dolls and took plenty of pictures in the pretty alley. We were getting hungry, so we headed to the famous udon restaurant in Yufuin, “Koharu Udon Shop.” It opens at 11:00, but we arrived at 10:40, and there was already a line. While waiting for my number, I went to buy the famous Golden Croquette nearby. It was really delicious. Crispy on the outside, moist on the inside! We shared several croquettes, but the Golden Croquette, which was said to be the best-selling, was the best. Finally, it was our turn! We ordered the kids udon and the most famous ‘Koharu udon’. The noodles were really chewy and the soup had a deep flavor. There was also cold udon… I wish I had ordered one. After eating a hearty meal, we went back to the tour bus to explore the streets . There were cute souvenir shops lined up in every corner of the streets, so it was fun to look around. Finally, we boarded the tour bus and headed to Beppu! On the way, we stopped by a mountain called **Yufudake (湯布岳)**. Since it is a mountain created by a volcano, there are almost no trees, and the wide open plains make it a great place to take pictures. It is a place that gives off a ‘perfect’ travel photo feeling. It is difficult to come here separately , so it is a good idea to take a tour bus like this. We quickly take some pictures and head back to Beppu. When you come to Beppu, the thing you must do is the ‘Jigoku Meguri’ tour. The name itself sounds a little scary, but it is actually a tourist course where you visit mysterious hot springs with boiling steam . There are a total of 7 representative Jigoku Meguri in Beppu, and on the tour I booked , I visited two of them, ** Yunohana Onsen** and Kamado Jigoku. The first place we arrived at was Yunohana Onsen (Miyoban Onsen)! You know the alum powder that we use when we dye balsam flowers? This is where the alum crystals, **’Yunohana (湯の花)’**, are actually made from the hot spring water. It is a structure where natural white crystals are created when minerals evaporate from hot spring water inside a traditional kiln that looks like a tile-roofed house and stick together. They also sell bath salts and hot spring soaps made here, and I bought one each of Yunohana hot spring sulfur soap and hot spring water mist because they say it is good for skin beauty . And I also bought two eggs made in the hot springs that I couldn’t miss . We arrived at Kamado Jigoku (釜地獄), which is just 5 minutes away . As the name suggests, it is a hot spring theme park with a steaming pot-like atmosphere. It is not just one place, but a complex hell with various types of hell hot springs. The hot springs here are really different in color and character. There is a hot spring with cobalt blue water that is perfect for taking pictures, a hot spring with a strong sulfur smell, a hot spring with boiling mud, a red hot spring with dissolved iron, and I was able to experience a foot bath. Kamado Jigoku also sells a variety of snacks that you can only taste here. Did you buy hot spring eggs at Yunohana Hot Springs earlier? The guide said that it would be fun to compare the eggs and taste them~, so I bought some eggs here too. There was salt and soy sauce on the table, and I ate them that way because they said that it was best to dip the egg white in salt and the yolk in soy sauce, and it really did make it taste much better. Compared to the eggs I had at Baekban Onsen , I think the eggs in this Gamado Jigoku were a bit chewier, but I don’t know if it’s just my imagination. And here’s something you absolutely can’t miss. It’s hot spring cider! It’s cider that you drink by pressing down on the glass beads on the top and popping them open. A sip of cider with hot spring eggs is just a joke. Okay, that’s the end of my Beppu tour! On the way back to Fukuoka on the bus, I stopped by a shrine called Dazaifu Tenmangu (太宰府天満宮) . This shrine is dedicated to the god of learning, Sugawara no Michizane . So in Japan, many students come here to pray for success when they have exams coming up. I went for a walk and prayed that my children would study well . I heard that the traditional rice cake snack called ‘Umegae Mochi’ is famous around here. People were eating them one by one. We were going to eat dinner, so we skipped the snack and just window shopped. After taking a tour bus and taking a deep sleep, we arrived back in Fukuoka. After unpacking at a hotel near Canal City, we went to the famous eel restaurant ‘Uoden’ for dinner . It’s a place with a good reputation, so waiting for about 30 minutes is standard. The unagi-don eel rice bowl and the sashimi rice bowl (kaisen-don)** are famous, so we ordered several and shared them. But seriously, this eel… It melted in my mouth as soon as I put it in. It was by far the best eel I’ve ever had . It was a total life-changing restaurant! If you add a glass of sake to it, it was just… perfect as a dinner for the last day of our trip. After filling up my stomach, I walked for about 15 minutes to Nakagawa Food Stall Street to help with digestion . The food stalls lined up along the river are a place that truly shows the emotion of Fukuoka. Maybe because it was Saturday night, there were a lot of people. There were so many people that it seemed better to have a quick beer as a second round rather than having dinner . We had children and parents with us, so we decided to just take a quick walk and go back, but if you’re a group of young people, it would be nice to have a beer. On the way back, we stopped by Canal City again to watch the Gundam fountain show that started at 9pm. When the show starts, the blinds on the back of the building’s glass window come down like a screen, and a short Gundam animation is shown on it. The fountain explodes along with the music to match the video , and the quality was better than I thought , so both children and adults had fun watching it. Since it’s a free show, I recommend seeing it at least once if you’re passing by. We finished our last night of the trip neatly with the fountain. This Fukuoka-Yufuin-Bappu trip was truly an unforgettable course that perfectly included eating, walking, resting, and healing . If you are wondering where to go, search for where to go. If you subscribe and like, I will come back with a better date course and travel course next time. Until now, it was about where to go and how to go. Thank you.
