Japan’s Cheapest Hotel? $13 Room with a $20 Breakfast Buffet Review | S3 Wakayama

welcome to Wakayama about an hour south of Osaka by local train I am currently staying at a hotel that only costs $13 USD/night conveniently located inside Wakayama Station The S3 Simple Stay Hotel it is a pod hotel operated inside the Hotel Granvia located on the 6th floor, which also seems to be a banquet hall front desk/lounge area definitely unused banquet seats lol only seating for 8 but there’s rarely anyone there instant food heaters drink machine and smoking area let’s check out the sleeping area here is our $13 pod pajamas, and towels are changed each day a few hangers small lockable storage air conditioning and light controls as well as a surprisingly large TV garbage, slippers and a shoe horn honestly, for the price – it’s exceptionally clean and comfortable for a few more dollars you can upgrade to a superior pod with
floor space and a table a spa in here too!? more sink stations than guests tbh… i checked if anyone was in beforehand, calm down communal showers, the perfect area to practice Japanese and a tiny bath, the ideal place to work on direct eye contact there’s also coin laundry and very clean washrooms with standard Japanese toilets very clean and comfortable, definitely worth $13/night now let’s try check out the breakfast buffet which costs $20… i have stayed at Hotel Granvia previously in Okayama it’s still by far the worst breakfast buffet i’ve been to in Japan hopefully this will be better… the breakfast buffet is shared with the Hotel Granvia guests 3000 JPY / $20 USD is well above the average breakfast price impressive selection let’s take a closer look dashi tamagoyaki and shirasu sesame tofu kamaboko kinokawazuke and honey umeboshi, both local pickles Wakayama is also home of Yuasa, the first soy sauce
ever brewed in Japan Kinzanji miso paste, Yuasa soy sauce is actually a byproduct
of it’s process miso soup toppings Kinme Mai rice, the most expensive rice in the world looks like regular rice… salad bar only potato seems to be popular dressings botanical curry corn soup soft boiled eggs and Genovese sauce scrambled eggs sausages “Potato dish of the day” fried chicken takoyaki and kushikatsu the steamed vegetables actually look nice… some nice looking pork shabu shabu grilled mackerel braised daikon and kinpira a fantastic looking tuna station soba station seaweed and natto breads and pastries toppings a whole honeycomb and what’s this… an automatic pancake machine, we’ll have to try that later… soft serve ice cream desserts fruit and yogurt strawberry jelly inedible display fruit fancy hot drink machines less fancy drinks and assorted cold drinks a fantastic looking breakfast i am particularly interested in trying the local Wakayama pickles itadakimasu miso soup with added Kinzanji miso paste i also added gluten and seaweed the flavour is more deep and slightly sweet kinpira sweet dashi flavour Kinzanji miso it has a very deep umami sweet and savoury flavour lean pork belly surprisingly tender and flavourful karaage with mustard sauce extremely moist dark meat takoyaki overcooked, as expected sitting on a hot plate still tasty though “Potato of the day” creamy mashed potato with a crispy exterior extra delicious with the mustard sauce kushikatsu it was a fatty pork and onion skewer surprisingly extremely moist and flavourful inside very delicious kinokawazuke, a radish pickle similar to takuan but much more crunchy botanical curry Google says it’s made with a specific plant rather than the regular spices
but it tasted like regular Japanese curry Wakayama is famous for tuna very tender and rich it goes extremely well with soy sauce and grated yam this felt like the only really special item on the buffet sesame tofu very firm and crumbly, not my favourite salt grilled mackerel pretty dry but still good because it’s salty umeboshi are most famous in Wakayama quite sweet and fruity, mildly salty and sour much better than the ones in Canada a very good breakfast with good variety almost forgot to try the shabu shabu pork shoulder with sesame sauce very tender and flavourful could be cut a bit thinner but very delicious alright, we have to try the pancake machine wave to activate after about one minute they are ready amazing. i also got the nice looking matcha green tea cake tastes exactly like a pancake… very light matcha mousse chocolate cake i wish the machine had been making that, so i wouldn’t have this pancake… overall, a pretty good buffet but there’s much better ones
for $20 USD… the tuna was excellent but it feels like the only premium item still much better than the buffet in Okayama! just don’t visit if you’re allergic to walnuts they don’t want to hear a single word about walnut allergies… anyways, highly recommend the hotel, buffet was average-ish
