Midsummer MAGIC in Finland
Ey! Finnish Midsommar, or as we like to call it, Juhannes, the one magical weekend when Finns come out of their saunas. Blink into the sun like newly hatched trolls and say “Let’s go to the McKee and make questionable decisions.” It’s… It’s that glorious time in late June when the sun never sets, mosquitoes outnumber people, and clothing becomes… …dot dot dot, optional. Dot, yes, optional. If you’re near a Finnish lake this weekend and here splashing, it’s either a sauna break or someone lost their close indignity to the midnight skinny dip. Or both. Probably both! Midsommar is also peak flirting season in Finland. Why? Because everyone looks hotter under the golden midnight sun. And after two long years of winter, even your cousin’s weird neighbor from Lapland starts looking like a snack. People escape to their summer cottages or McKee with friends, beer, sausages, and an unhealthy number of matter. And if there’s one thing Finns love more than silence, it’s lighting stuff on fire. Enter the cocoa, the Midsmurb on fire. It’s basically a flaming pile of wood that’s… I don’t know, summer vibes, ancient fertility rites, an excuse to burn stuff and stare at it while sipping milk all of the above. Speaking of fertility, old Midsommar traditions are wild. Ledgy says, if you pick seven flowers from seven different fields and sleep with them under your pillow, you’ll dream of your future spouse, or at least someone to share your sauna with. Then come the games. Throwing the boot, egg and spoon races. And that one uncle who swears he used to be great at this, just before pulling a hamstring. And let’s not forget the national sport of Julianus. Getting stuck in traffic as half of Hell’s Inky tries to leave the city at the exact same moment. Mids, but beneath the silliness, Midsamer is truly magical. The air smells like birch leaves and grilled macaw. The lakes reflect endless, twilight, and time slows down. Just enough for you to fall a little bit in love with nature, with summer, maybe even with that mysterious stranger in the flower crown. So whether you’re dancing around a pole in Finland or watching this from your town in another country, remember, on Midsamer, anything can happen. Just bring bug spray. Lots of it. And maybe leave your clothes by the sauna door.
