5 Things to Do in Nihonmatsu, Fukushima

1. Climb Mt. Adatara 🏔️
At 1,700m tall, Mt. Adatara offers panoramic views that make the long trek worthwhile. Named one of Japan’s top 100 mountains (and great for autumn colours), you can even take a gondola up to 1,300m, making this hike beginner-friendly.

2. Explore Dake Onsen ♨️
Dake Onsen is famous for its rare, naturally acidic waters – pulled from a source 8km away. The long journey softens the water, making it gentle on your skin. Don’t miss the stunning cherry blossom tunnel at Sakurazaka, typically in full bloom by mid-April with snowy Mt. Adatara in the background.

3. Make washi 🪭
Get hands-on with traditional Japanese washi paper, recognized as an Intangible Cultural Heritage in Japan. Learn the difference between washi and Western paper, see the kozo plants it’s made from, and craft your own postcard and lampshade to take home.

4. Visit Kasumigajo Castle Park 🏯
Every autumn, the ruins of this historic 19th-century castle transform for a vibrant chrysanthemum doll display during Nihonmatsu’s annual Kiku Ningyo Festival. In spring, it’s a cherry blossom paradise with stunning views over the city.

5. Nihonmatsu Lantern Festival 🏮
Each October, Nihonmatsu lights up with this centuries-old tradition. Massive taiko drum floats glowing with lanterns parade through the streets, ending at Nihonmatsu Shrine. With roots back to 1643, it’s a celebration of history, unity, and pure festival energy.

Nihonmatsu City is accessible via a 20min Tohoku Line train from Koriyama Station (75mins from Tokyo!) or a 40min drive. Rental cars are available at the station.
