No matter how much I work, it just never seems to get any easier,
I find myself just staring down at my hands. Hakodate, tucked away at the southern tip of Hokkaido. When people think of Hakodate, the Red Brick Warehouses come to mind, and Goryokaku, the famed night view—one of Japan’s top three, the morning market, and of course, Motomachi. But today, I’m heading somewhere quieter— a lesser-known spot called Cape Tachimachi. Since today’s plans involve a few tram rides,
a one-day tram pass made the most sense. Before heading to Cape Tachimachi, I thought I’d grab a bite at a place I visit every time I’m in Hakodate. But oh no,,it turns out the shop’s closed—
the owner’s in hospital for a while. (Wishing him a smooth and speedy recovery) This place usually serves warm, home-style meals, the kind that truly feel like a homemade dinner. With that plan out the window, I had to think on my feet— so I headed for a nearby curry place. Picked something from the menu, had a little wander around the shop while I waited, and soon, my beef tendon curry was served. Yum. Feeling full and happy, I hopped on the tram again, this time bound for Cape Tachimachi. The nearest stop is the final tram station, Yachigashira—
from there, it’s about a 20-minute walk. I strolled through a quiet local neighbourhood, and made some adorable little friends along the way. Passed by a grand-looking house that really stood out, and not long after, a sign told me I was almost there— with a steep uphill stretch waiting to greet me. Met another tiny, fluffy local halfway up, and the path to Cape Tachimachi took an unexpected turn— lined with old cemeteries on both sides. Being a bit of a scaredy-cat, I kept my pace and moved on quickly, climbing a little further up the hillside. And then, just ahead— the view finally opened up. After that climb, the scenery felt like a proper reward. And so, the day slowly winds down, without any fuss. I did hope to see a deeper sunset, but I’d probably need a bit more courage to stay here that late. So I called it a day before the sun fully dipped below the hills. Tonight’s dinner? The local legend, Lucky Pierrot. It’s the kind of place that somehow keeps calling you back, so I end up eating there two or three times every trip.
