Japan’s Hidden Fermentation Town | Sweet Treats & a Fluffy Akita Dog 🇯🇵
Hi there! The final day of my Akita journey.
Ahh… what a perfect day it is—warm and peaceful. Just arrived in Yokote—a town of traditional storehouses.
The sky is clear, clouds gently drifting. This fresh greenery—it’s the perfect season for a walk. A few steps in, and the charming streets unfold before me. I ran into so fluffy Akita dog!
That big round face, with all the features squeezed right in the center… I’m in love. Here in Yokote, there’s something special. Japan’s very first museum dedicated to manga. It’s beautifully designed, showcasing the best of Japanese craftsmanship. Such intricate architecture. I wonder what style this is? This town is also known as a “fermentation town.” So it’s time for a sweet break at a cafe that carries on those culinary traditions. I ordered the miso caramel soft serve! The lady working here wears a traditional apron.
Someday, I want to be the kind of woman who looks good in one, too. Look—they’re making it fresh for me! 🙂 Let’s find a nice place to sit and enjoy this. Why is miso and ice cream such a perfect match?!
It’s sweet, salty, and rich like caramel. Can you hear the sound of my happiness? I wonder if they used to ferment miso back here long ago? Inside these kura storehouses, special microbes live and grow. Each one gives a unique flavor to the food. Thank you, little microorganisms—for all this deep umami. And thank you to the artisans who care for the koji mold,
nurturing it so it never disappears from our culture. What did you think of Akita?
It’s not the most famous place, but it’s packed with charm. Most of all, the food is amazing—and there’s so much sake! If you enjoyed this trip, please like and leave a comment!
It means the world to me 🙂
Come with me on the final day of my Akita journey, as I explore Yokote, a peaceful town in southern Akita Prefecture, Japan.
