4K | Furano Trip & Snow Mountain / Hokkaido Japan

On March 18 we left Sapporo in the middle of the night and drove to Furano. In March, winter is ending in Furano, but up in the mountains, it’s still full-on winter. We arrived at Hakugin-so, which serves as both the trailhead and a hot spring facility. Enjoying a day-use hot spring here is also highly recommended. Today, we plan to climb to the summit of Mt. Sandan, one of the peaks in the Tokachidake Range, and ski back down. Animal tracks can be seen all over the place. It takes about 2.5 to 3 hours to reach the summit of Mt. Sandan from Shirogane-so. We’ve reached the summit. A breathtaking view unfolds before us. Although it’s a bit cloudy, we can still see the entire Tokachidake Range and the town of Furano. The terrain is complex, and rocks or tree branches can be hidden beneath the snow, so caution is necessary. Since it snowed the day before, the conditions were great for March. After descending, we headed to Ryounkaku, which is located nearby. This is truly a scenic spot. Feeling hungry, we stopped by a hamburger restaurant in downtown Furano. The burgers here are huge and incredibly tasty. The staff speaks English, so it’s a great spot for international visitors too. In the evening, the Tokachidake Range we climbed in the morning began to glow in the sunset. A peaceful and beautiful moment unfolded. That night, we slept in our car in -10°C weather and gazed up at the starry sky. With very little light pollution, we were able to witness an incredibly moving night sky. In the early morning, wild animals were running around. We welcomed the morning on a quiet hill with no one else around. Hokkaido is a vast and beautiful place, full of nature. On this trip, we drove from Sapporo to Furano, which takes about three hours by car.
We went backcountry skiing in the Tokachidake Range, and after skiing, we spent the night in our car.
That night, we were able to enjoy a stunning sunset, a sky full of stars, and a beautiful sunrise the next morning.
