・Lord Abe no Seimei Located in Abeno, Osaka, Abe Seimei Shrine and Abe Oji Shrine are historic shrines that convey the legends of the Heian-period onmyoji (yin-yang master) Abe no Seimei and the deep history of the area. Abe Seimei Shrine is a small shrine near Abe Oji Shrine, and is managed by it.
This shrine is said to be the birthplace of Abe no Seimei, a famous onmyoji.
Seimei’s mother is said to have been a white fox, and he was born into a family believed to possess mystical powers, which supported his extraordinary talents.
The shrine grounds feature sacred trees symbolizing protection by the white fox, and a well associated with Seimei. Visitors can feel its mysterious energy in the tranquil atmosphere. On the other hand, Abe Oji Shrine is said to have been established by Emperor Nintoku and served as the guardian shrine of the Abe clan.
Located along the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage route, it is known as the second of the ninety-nine Oji shrines, and has a long history of granting safety and peace of mind to travelers. We first visited Abe Oji Shrine. After getting off at Higashi-Tengachaya Station on the Hankai Line, go left and turn right at the first intersection. Walk about 5 minutes along the Kumano Kodo to reach Abe Oji Shrine. West Torii gate (Kumano Kodo side) Tamano Kodama-no-Kami
A sacred camphor tree estimated to be 600 years old Morino Kodama-no-Kami
Another sacred 600-year-old camphor tree Hatano Kodama-no-Kami
Also a sacred camphor tree about 600 years old Walking between these sacred trees is truly awe-inspiring. East Torii gate (Abeno-suji side) Chozuya (Purification fountain) Main Shrine Hall The guardian lion-dogs here are made of bronze. Yatagarasu Shrine
Yatagarasu is a mythical three-legged crow known as a guide in Japanese mythology. Kuzunoha Inari Shrine
Dedicated to Kuzunoha, the legendary mother of Abe no Seimei. Kuzunoha Inari Shrine
Kuzunoha is believed to have been a spiritual fox. Akinai Shrine
Named “Akinai” (no autumn) to symbolize “unending business” (a pun meaning prosperous commerce). Water Deity Shrine Now heading to Abe Seimei Shrine. Walk back about 50 meters along the Kumano Kodo. Front Torii gate Chozuya (Purification fountain) There are various theories about the birthplace of Abe no Seimei. Main Hall (Haiden)
The most accepted story is that he was born here in Abeno, Osaka, to Abe no Yasuna, a powerful local lord, and Kuzunoha-hime, a messenger of the deity Shinoda Myojin from Izumi Province. Bronze statue of Lord Abe no Seimei Statue of Kuzunoha the Spirit Fox Flying Away
It is said that when Seimei discovered her true identity, she could no longer live as a human being, and returned to her home in Mount Shinoda. This is the famous legend of “Kuzunoha’s Farewell.” This statue depicts the moment of their parting. Site of Seimei’s Birth Bath Well Stone monument of “Traditional Birthplace of Abe no Seimei” Shizumi Stone (also known as Pregnancy Stone)
Said to bring blessings for safe childbirth. Taina Inari Shrine
“Taina” is said to come from the name of Seimei’s father, Abe no Yasuna. What did you think of Abe Seimei Shrine?
Although small in scale, it draws attention for sites related to Seimei’s roots, such as the Birth Bath Well and the statue of Kuzunoha.
There is also a Seimei Shrine in Kyoto, dedicated to his later life, as it was built on the site of his residence.
It features many items connected to the Heian period’s onmyodo, such as the Seimei Well and Shikigami statues.
I’d love to visit the Kyoto shrine too. ●Access
