Japanese Spring Water Garden Ambience #湧水庭園四明荘 Yuusui-Teien Shimeiso, Nagasaki, Shimabara City Japan

Enjoy the sounds and tranquility of Spring Water Garden Shimeiso (湧水庭園 四明荘). A serene and historically significant Japanese garden located in Shimabara, Nagasaki Prefecture, often referred to as the “City of Swimming Carp” due to its abundant spring water.

This traditional-style Japanese villa, built in the late 19th century, sits gracefully over a natural spring that daily gushes an impressive 3,000 tons of crystal-clear water. This water feeds several ponds within the garden, where vibrant Nishikigoi (koi carp) swim gracefully, visible through the remarkably clear water.

The garden’s design, said to have been created by Zen monks between 1926 and 1943, features carefully placed red pines, maple trees, and other plants that provide a changing tapestry of colors throughout the seasons. A key feature of Shimeiso is its elegant main house with a tiled roof, whose veranda (engawa) extends directly over one of the ponds, creating the illusion that the building is floating on the water. Visitors can sit on this veranda, enjoy a cup of green tea (often served with Shimabara’s spring water), and immerse themselves in the tranquil atmosphere while observing the carp and the bubbling springs.

Shimeiso is recognized as a National Registered Tangible Cultural Property and a National Registered Monument, highlighting its cultural and historical importance. It offers a unique opportunity to experience a blend of traditional Japanese architecture, exquisite garden design, and the refreshing purity of natural spring water, providing a peaceful escape and a glimpse into Shimabara’s rich water culture.
