A baby Japanese macaque was born June 8 at the Milwaukee County Zoo, the zoo reported in a blog post.
Its parents are mom Usagi, 12 years old, and dad Kota, 10 years old. It’s Usagi’s second offspring, bringing the Zoo’s total population of Japanese macaques to 11.
The baby’s sex is still undetermined, the zoo reported.
“The animal care team shares that all is going very well with the baby, and they will remain hands-off,” according to the blog post. Usagi has been holding the baby close, so zoo staff members have not examined or weighed it. The baby has not yet been named.
Also known as snow monkeys, Japanese macaques live on the islands of Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu. Their natural territory is “further north than any other primate, apart from man,” the zoo wrote.
