Yokohama is a prominent port city located in Kanagawa Prefecture, just south of Tokyo, and serves as the prefectural capital. It is Japan’s second-largest city by population and plays a central role in the Greater Tokyo Area, both economically and culturally. Though once a small fishing village in the Edo period, Yokohama underwent rapid modernization after it was opened to foreign trade in 1859 as one of the first treaty ports, fundamentally reshaping its character.

The name “Yokohama” is derived from its original geographic configuration: “yoko” (横) meaning “side” and “hama” (浜) meaning “beach,” describing the sideways stretch of land along the bay. Over time, the city became synonymous with Japan’s entry into globalization and Western influence, often regarded as the birthplace of modern Japanese industry, foreign diplomacy, and cultural exchange.

Today, Yokohama is administratively divided into 18 wards (ku), with Naka Ward and Minato Mirai 21 forming its historical and economic core. Minato Mirai, meaning “harbor of the future,” is a striking urban redevelopment area filled with high-rise offices, commercial complexes, and cultural venues including Landmark Tower, Pacifico Yokohama, and Yokohama Museum of Art. Despite its futuristic skyline, the city retains colonial-era architecture in Yamashita Park and the Motomachi district, echoing its foreigner-settled past.
