Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba is set to engage in crucial trade discussions with U.S. President Donald Trump in Canada, aiming to alleviate the trade tariffs that have posed significant challenges to Japan’s auto industry. This marks their second face-to-face dialogue, following extensive trade negotiations in Washington.
Japan’s chief tariff negotiator, Ryosei Akazawa, has been actively exploring potential agreements with U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick. The primary challenge for Ishiba is to persuade Trump to lift the 25% tariff on Japanese cars and an additional 24% reciprocal tariff, without conceding too much, which could jeopardize his political standing at home.
As Japan’s auto exports to the U.S. face increasing pressure, data from IndexBox indicates that while the dollar value of car exports to the U.S. in April decreased by nearly 5%, the actual number of cars exported rose significantly. This suggests that Japanese manufacturers might be absorbing the costs, a strategy that analysts deem unsustainable. Mizuho Research & Technologies estimates that persistent tariffs could reduce Japan’s GDP by 0.9%.
With an upcoming upper house election and the potential political ramifications of the trade talks, Ishiba’s ability to negotiate effectively without compromising his domestic support is critical. Analysts suggest that a failure to secure a favorable deal might not immediately harm Japan’s economy but could hinder long-term growth prospects.
