Kagoshima is located in the southern part of Japan, known for its two peninsulas and many small islands stretching toward Okinawa. I stayed for three nights, but quickly realized that wasn’t enough—at least five nights are needed to truly explore and enjoy this amazing area.
Sakurajima is one of Japan’s active volcanoes. I must say, this little island is even more famous than Mt. Fuji when it comes to constant eruptions. That’s why the ferry between Kagoshima’s mainland and the island runs 24/7.
I stayed in an area called Tenmonkan, which is about a 20-minute walk or a 10-minute tram ride from the central station. Tenmonkan is a very convenient area with great options for shopping, dining, and sightseeing. I highly recommend staying in this neighborhood if you’re planning to visit Kagoshima!
