The Luman community in Chiayi’s Zhuqi Township has a new master for Lumachan Railway Station: an Akita named Boji. The adorable new addition has been attracting a lot of visitors to take pictures. But the owner says that Boji is lazy and might skip work, so he asked people to please understand if he isn’t around when they come by.

Lumachan Railway Station might have a century of history, but now boasts a brand new master. It’s this adorable Akita, Boji.

He looks professional standing in the station master’s box. But before long, he lays down for a rest. Kids excitedly crowd around to take a picture with him.

Tsai Ya-hsuan
Boji’s owner
Boji is an extremely lazy dog, so he doesn’t have a set work schedule. You have to work around his schedule. Since Taiwan is pretty hot, he doesn’t really like to move around.

Lumachan Station is a stop along the Alishan Forest Railway, with a building in the Japanese style. The development association for the Luman community in Chiayi’s Zhuqi竹崎 Township recently won a tender to revitalize the station. They found the Akita as station master to generate buzz.

Lin I-chun
Luman Community Development Association
For our Japanese station, he’s the same breed as Hachiko. Lumachan Station is just like him. Stationmaster Boji comes here every day to work without pay. If you have the chance, you should come say hi and remember to bring some snacks as his salary.

Weng Chang-liang
Chiayi County Commissioner
It’s the kind of travel where you make stops along a small rail line. Lumachan is a very important stop along the way. We hope to give people many different ways to access Zhuqi.

This unpaid stationmaster doesn’t have a salary, and accordingly doesn’t work very hard at his job. The owner reminded visitors that when Boji doesn’t want to move, don’t pull at him to avoid any incidents.

  1. Looks more like a jindo. Akitas are much bigger. They also don’t like people they don’t know and wouldn’t make a good public service dog
