Japan’s Most Silent Office Rule
why are so many Japanese salary men collapsing after work in Japan leaving work on time makes you look lazy which is why employees endure unpaid overtime to avoid being the first to leave a journalist once worked 159 hours of overtime in a single month her case sparked national outrage but the workday doesn’t end at the office then comes Nomikai mandatory nights out with your boss decline and you’re selfish leave early and you’re disloyal so you go anyway until the last train or until your body gives out it’s not about relaxing it’s about proving you belong countless individuals face severe health challenges every year due to their relentless work culture but no one calls it a problem here
Some offices in Japan follow quiet customs around working hours
This one isn’t written down, but everyone knows it

Does this feel normal to you and what’s it like in your country?
It introduces some very old Japanese customs. I hope you remove it because it gives a bad image.
For what I've seen the nomikai culture it's also a thing in South Korea, I wonder if that's an east Asian thing
Pretty typical unspoken asian work law. Being early is on time, being on time is late. You can only leave work once your boss has left etc.
If you're planning your retirement in Japan then it's literally heaven but if you want to work in Japan, congratulations you're doomed in your life. If my work says 8 hours then it should only be 8 hours, not more not less.
If people start ignoring unwritten expectations and follow only what's stated in their employment contracts doing nothing above or below the required scope unless in specific, justified situations they will gain more time for life, balance, and ultimately become more productive and creative.
I just watched all of your content and it's dope. I love your work so much. I wish we could interact or something. See ya(Sayonara)…
Is there any other issue in leaving early other than the anxiety?
You forgot to mention WHY that journalist case caused outrage.
I will work overtime when needed but not for free. Working for free endless hours and gain nothing than lost time with my family seems unfair and a one sided deal for the company.
It's seems foolish 😂 like who promoting this thing as good ideas like if you are putting them in over work then at least pay them 😂😂😂😂
It’s due to the 我慢 culture here. I’ve heard Korea is similar but otherwise no this is not at all normal and frankly quite sad.
and they wonder why the birth rate is so low xD
They wouldn’t see me staying even an extra minute
Because Japan is living in 2035 🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡
Its not just Japan, all over East Asia countries. One of the reason people won't have kids anymore. Human were born not for working 12 hours plus a day
yes then I am glad that I live in a country where you work to live and not the other way around
You can call me lazy but I will have peace of mind I would leave the millisecond it was time
I've heard people say the Japanese live in 2050 compared to other countries.
That 159 hours overtime in one month is probably what the future holds for all workers everywhere.
What happens if I dont care how "lazy" people think I am? Fired?
Business opportunity. You charge your co-workers a fee every month to be the first to leave everyday. Bosses will hate you but you get the raise by other means. 😂😂😂
Why aren't the bosses crashing out if they're always the last one to leave?
And they wonder why birth rates are down. 😮😮😮
Stalinism = corporate elitism
You get my 8 hours and thats that, ill work non stop doing whatever but come 8 hours im out
