Former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad recently visited Malaysia’s pavilion at the Osaka Expo 2025, as part of his broader engagements during a working trip to Japan.
Sharing the update on his official X (formerly Twitter) account, Dr Mahathir said the visit was part of his efforts to understand the latest developments in third-generation stem cell technologies. At the expo, he was brought to the Pasona Pavilion in Osaka, which showcases cutting-edge applications in regenerative medicine and biotechnology.
Prior to his stop in Osaka, Dr Mahathir was in Tokyo to attend the Nikkei Forum: Future of Asia, an event he participates in annually. He also delivered a lecture at Kyoto University on the topic “Asia and the World on the Brink: Rethinking Order in an Age of Turmoil,” engaging in a dialogue with students on concerns over the region’s future.
During his visit to Kyoto, he toured the Centre for iPS Cell Research and Application (CiRA) and met with Nobel laureate Dr Shinya Yamanaka. Dr Mahathir shared his insights on the centre’s pioneering work in stem cell research, which includes reprogramming blood cells into pluripotent stem cells to potentially treat damaged or failing organs.
He also made a stop at the Kobe Eye Hospital, where stem cell technologies are already transforming lives through cutting-edge treatments.
Dr Mahathir’s trip reflects his ongoing interest in science, technology and Asia’s future, particularly in the fields of innovation and healthcare.
