TOKYO (Kyodo) — German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier is scheduled to visit Japan next week to attend the World Exposition in Osaka, the Japanese government said Wednesday, with his country saying he also plans to meet renowned novelist Haruki Murakami.
During his three-day stay through June 20, he is also slated to hold separate meetings with Emperor Naruhito and Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, according to the government.
Best-selling Japanese author Murakami has had his works translated into German and published there, and he has received a German literary award.
The president of Germany is defined by law as the head of state but holds a ceremonial role with no real decision-making power. The chancellor serves as the nation’s political leader.
