Justin Terada
New York-based Hughes Hubbard & Reed has strengthened its Asia-Pacific presence with the addition of international corporate and M&A lawyer Justin Terada as counsel and head of its Tokyo office, with the appointment specifically intended to also help expand the firm’s transactional practice.
Seth Rothman, chair of Hughes Hubbard’s Asia-Pacific practice dually based in New York City and Miami, told Asia Business Law Journal that, as part of the firm’s practice in the region, it maintained an office in Tokyo to ensure that they were available and responsive to Japanese clients and law firm partners.
Rothman said Terada’s arrival in Tokyo would help the firm continue to do that.
“He is a talented lawyer who communicates well, understands Japanese business practices and is detail oriented. Justin is fluent in Japanese and will be working in Tokyo on a full-time basis, supported by lawyers from all our offices who spend time in Japan and travel there regularly,” said Rothman.
The Tokyo office, which is currently Hughes Hubbard’s only office in Asia, focuses on supporting the US and international legal needs of Japanese clients in different industries, covering dispute resolution, anti-corruption and investigations, antitrust, international trade, import and export compliance and cross-border transactions and financings.
Terada, who has joined from DLA Piper where he practised as a senior associate, specialises in cross-border M&A, strategic and private equity investments as well as joint ventures and corporate reorganisations.
Admitted in California and England and Wales, Terada started his legal career with Nagashima Ohno & Tsunematsu, one of Japan’s four largest law firms. A fluent Japanese speaker, the new Tokyo office head also previously worked for close to 13 years at White & Case in Tokyo and Frankfurt, during which he served as head of the firm’s European Japan desk.
