【Solo Travel】Exploring Sendai|Daikannon, Matsushima & Local Food

A city where you find delicious food
and a cozy, welcoming vibe. I finally made it to Sendai City
in Miyagi Prefecture! I’ve wanted to come here
for such a long time. First, I’m heading to Matsushima,
one of Japan’s top three scenic spots. You might wonder, “Going just to see
some scenery?” But when you’re in your 40s,
you start to find that kind of thing fun. Haha I kind of wish I’d paid more attention
to geography back in school. I arrived while I was busy
regretting my life choices. It’s like something out of
a movie scene… such a beautiful station. As expected from a tourist spot,
it’s packed with students on school trips. Apparently, the classic way to see
these views is by taking a sightseeing boat. But I’m not a fan of big crowds… So I’ll skip it this time! Oh look, there’s a bridge to the island! That’s good enough for me! Of course, they charged me
a bridge toll. Haha But walking across with the sea breeze
feels amazing. I heard that even Einstein
visited here 100 years ago. So right now, I’m seeing the same view
he did. That alone makes me feel
just a little bit smarter. Haha … Thinking about silly stuff like that
has made me hungry. Well, they say thinking burns calories! I found a market
selling fresh seafood. Thinking “I want dried fish?”
That’s how I know I’m getting old. Haha Seafood bowls sound great,
but Matsushima is famous for oysters! So I went with an oyster burger! Even a creepy-looking oyster
can be cute as a cartoon. Haha Inside a crispy bun,
an oyster cream croquette. It’s so good! Man, I need a drink
to go with this! Cheers to the beautiful views
of Matsushima! Next up: an oyster curry bread. Look, the oyster is riding
in a little shell boat! Haha The bread’s crispy
and fresh out of the fryer. Big chunks of oyster inside—
it’s seriously tasty. Who in the world decided
to eat something this gross? They were so brave! Haha I saw a big crowd,
so I peeked in to see what was going on… Kamaboko grilling experience!? I definitely want to try that! Stuff like this never stops being
exciting, no matter your age. Apparently, to grill it just right,
you need spirit, fire, and patience. I can’t help it—I’m flipping mine
way too soon. Haha What I really need right now
is patience! Done! Kamaboko tastes 200 times better
when you grill it yourself. Haha And finally,
of course—a Zunda shake. To put it simply,
it’s an edamame (soybean) shake. It’s honestly
the best shake in the world—no doubt! Back at Sendai Station. Heading to the hotel
where I’ll stay tonight. This is my first time
visiting Sendai. It’s more urban than I expected.
I’m a bit surprised. Turns out it’s the largest city
in Tohoku with 1.09 million people. But it doesn’t feel flashy.
It’s actually calming. Even though it’s my first time here,
it feels surprisingly comfortable. Tonight’s stay is at the capsule hotel
“9 hours.” Booking directly through their
official site is the cheapest. Since I’m just sleeping,
a capsule is enough. I’m not a broke traveler!
Call me a budget traveler. Haha Seems like the floors
are separated by gender. Check-in complete. Heading to the locker room
with my key. It’s eerily quiet… LOL Here’s my locker. A bag with amenities. Bath towel. Face towel. Pajamas in a questionable color. LOL Toothbrush. Disposable slippers. No shoes allowed beyond this point! It’s so quiet,
every sound echoes. LOL The washroom is super clean!
Way better than my gym’s. LOL Wow! The restroom is so clean,
I feel like I could take a deep breath here… Gonna go take a dump. Bidet Heaven. Now that I’ve done my business,
I’m hungry. Googled Sendai’s local food,
and found “Mabo Yakisoba.” Never heard of it before.
I’m excited. This must be it! Alright then, To everyone watching YouTube
with a beer in hand, Cheers! Whoa!
Looks delicious! Mapo tofu on Chinese noodles!?
Never seen this combo before! Spicy mapo sauce
coating chewy noodles. Super tasty! This is a winner!
Whoever thought of this is a genius. I wish Chinese restaurants
nationwide would serve this. Ah, I’ve found a great dish! Since I smell like mapo tofu,
I’m going to shower and sleep. Haha Glass-walled and stylish!
And it’s clean too. Shampoo and body soap are provided. The most important thing
in a hotel is water pressure. Hot water melts away
the fatigue from traveling… Now, slipping into
those indescribable gray pajamas. Haha Wait, could it be…? Is the color code #999999
because the hotel is called “9 hours”? Anyway, just a random thought
while drying my hair. Alright then,
off to the capsule room! Whoa… so beautiful! It has a futuristic design. The capsule has these smooth,
rounded shapes. I chose the lower bunk. Honestly, climbing up
is too much for a guy in his 40s. The roll screen
gives you full privacy! By law, capsule hotels
aren’t allowed to have locks. Feels like being back
in my mother’s womb… haha, just kidding. But if you’re claustrophobic,
it might be tough. Anyway, I’m calling it a night.
Tomorrow’s an early day! I slept like a baby.
Capsules are surprisingly comfy! But the moment I woke up,
I was shocked at how close the walls were. For a second, I was like,
“Where the heck am I?!” Today, I’m going to see
the giant Sendai Daikannon statue. I’ve seen photos before, but
the real thing must be way bigger… I’m taking a bus
from Sendai Station. The fare is 400 yen.
It takes about 30 minutes. The closest stop is
“Sendai Daikannon-mae.” But I want to see it
from a distance first. So I’m getting off
five stops earlier on purpose. Now, where’s
that giant statue? Oh wow, I can see it! I’d heard the rumors,
but it really is massive! It’s a shame the camera
can’t capture this scale… They say a local businessman
built it to pray for the city’s success. Honestly, it looks like
some CG composite shot! It’s like Godzilla… Apparently, it was used
as a location in a Thai movie. That’s why so many tourists
from Thailand come here. Standing next to the hotel
really shows how huge it is. Made it to the Daikanmitsuji
temple at the base! I’m praying for safe travels. I wonder what it’s like
inside this statue… Admission is 500 yen. The ticket is actually
a cool amulet. Feels lucky, so
I’ll keep it at home. Inside the statue, there are
Buddha statues everywhere. I heard there are
about 150 of them. They also have old stuff like magazines
and newspapers from when it was built. A Toyota MR2. Barcelona Olympics. Oh, Playboy magazine. Such a classy magazine
that really piques your curiosity. But why am I reading this
in a sacred place surrounded by Buddhas? LOL Taking the elevator
all the way to the top. I guess you can’t
go all the way to the top of the head. So much greenery here.
It’s really beautiful. Looks like there are
a lot of golf courses… I had no idea the statue’s body
was actually hollow! Even in here,
there are tons of Buddha statues. Each one is different.
So unique! Everyone’s got
such a peaceful face. People left coins
at the statues’ feet. Who did this? Haha! Nice balance though! Behind the Daikannon statue,
there’s a little temple. Sending prayers for
everyone’s safe travels. I’ve never seen
an oil god before. Since it’s an oil god,
people offer bottles of oil. Pouring oil on it
is supposed to bring you good luck. So I’m pouring a lot,
hoping it’ll help me get a girlfriend. LOL This is the first time I’ve ever
poured oil on a god! It’s all slimy… Hope that little guy
can still breathe! Haha I’m getting hungry,
so it’s time to say goodbye to the gods. When you come to Sendai,
you’ve gotta try the gyutan! There are so many gyutan restaurants
inside the station. And they all have
long lines! The prices are
pretty high though… I was tempted by gyutan curry
and gyutan burgers… But I went with
the classic gyutan set meal! This is my first time
having real gyutan in Sendai. Can’t wait to try it! Whoa! It looks amazing! Look at how thick
these slices are! Not like the paper-thin stuff
you get at regular BBQ joints! This is 500 times better
than I imagined! It’s simple—just salt,
but unbelievably tasty. The more you chew it,
the more the flavor comes out! The tail soup meat
is so tender, it just melts… For this thickness and flavor,
2300 yen is totally worth it! I’d come to Sendai
just to eat this again. Costs about the same
as my capsule hotel! Haha Of course, I had to end
with a Zunda shake! Sendai is such
a wonderful place. It’s tasty, relaxing, and
definitely a place I want to visit again.
