As reported by the media Reuters
On June 9, Monday, an explosion occurred on the Japanese island of Okinawa, near the US Kadena Air Base. As a result of the incident, four members of the Japan Ground Self-Defense Forces who were at the warehouse sustained minor injuries.
According to information provided by the Japanese Ministry of Defense, the explosion happened during the military’s preparation for bomb disposal operations. The injured suffered lacerations on their fingers and possible hearing damage, but their lives are not in danger.
The explosion likely occurred at a warehouse of unexploded ordnance located on the base grounds. Local authorities reported that evacuation of residents in neighboring areas was not ordered, and there is no risk of further explosions or fires.
Okinawa remains an important strategic point for the US, as most American military facilities are located there, even after the island was returned to Japanese control in 1972, following the end of World War II.
