✨Cape Town, V&A Waterfront Walking Tour ・Luxury Canals & Marina on a Sunny Day | 4K Binaural
Welcome to Cape Town! South Africa’s oldest city, with its origin dating back to 1652. The city has been named “The Mother City” since the 1930’s, as the oldest urban settlement in the country. ✨There are 5 hidden Dotted Paths logos along this walk—see if you can spot them all and share your finds in the comments!🤣 We begin our walk at the water canal just outside the Cape Town International Convention Centre and The Westin Hotel. This is where you can catch the City Sightseeing’s Canal Cruise Water Taxi. This canal, built to link the Foreshore to the Victoria & Alfred (V&A) Waterfront, has a rich history dating back to its construction in the early 2000’s. It is lesser known as Roggebaai canal, covering a distance of 1,5 kilometers, with a depth of 1,2 meters and a width measuring between 10 and 45 meters. Roggebaai, meaning “skate bay” in Dutch, was once a bustling fishing area in the early 1900s. It was once a prominent landing spot for small boats, with fishermen selling their fresh catch directly to the public on the beach. We are now at the Dockrail Road hotel and apartment precinct, with units overlooking the canal and the harbour. On this day the Norwegian Sky from Norwegian Cruise Line has docked at Duncan Dock, Cape Town Cruise Terminal. You can get the best view of the cruise terminal if you are staying at the Harbour Bridge Hotel & Suites or the AC Hotel by Marriot. The Canal Quays houses self-catering apartments with stunning views of the mountain and the sea. We are now passing the Roggebaai Gas Turbine and Substation, a critical infrastructure to help deal with electricity demand in the city (load shedding). This is the end of Roggebaai area, and now we will cross over to the V&A Waterfront Precinct. Here comes the Sightseeing Water Taxi✨ This is the gateway to the Waterfront, where Dock Road Junction connects the city to the V&A. We have now reached the Canal District, and the beginning of the V&A Waterfront. The City Lodge Hotel on the left and Waterway House Office Building on the right overlook the water canal. This is Battery Park, an urban park and piazza that can host sporting activities like water paddling, kayaking, dragon boat racing and swimming. Pedal Boat Cape Town offers a fun pedaling activity for small groups. You can rent a pedal boat for R100 per person for 30 minutes. This marks the end of the Canal District and next we enter the V&A Marina. Cape Town’s longest-standing waterfront development, the Marina encompasses 515 homes across 17 distinct buildings. Offering one, two and three-bedroom apartments alongside penthouses, the entire development was finalised by 2009. The Marina’s North Wharf accommodates over 200 private berths, including dedicated superyacht moorings, and can handle vessels up to 168 meters in length. Dragon boat racing first arrived at Cape Town’s V&A Waterfront in 1992 when two traditional wooden flag-catching dragon boats were unveiled. Each October, the marina transforms for Boatica Cape Town, Africa’s premier boating expo, showcasing the latest yachts, powerboats and marine technologies. A red water taxi arrives from a 30-minute harbour cruise, showing the popular sightseeing route. Peeking into the Alfred Basin, with boats parked along the West and East Quays. Now we are crossing the bascule bridge separating the Marina from the Alfred Basin. Here comes another water taxi—the yellow amphibious ‘Waterfront Duck’ that tours both road and sea, offering a unique perspective of Cape Town’s history. We have reached the Dry Dock District. The Bascule Bridge, built in 1996, lifts to let large vessels through—an impressive feat of engineering. Ahead is the Robinson Dry Dock, measuring 161.2 meters by 20.7 meters with a depth of 7.9 meters. Opened in 1882, it remains one of the oldest dry docks still in use. Approaching our final destination, the red Hop-on and Hop-off Sightseeing taxi stop. On this day, the seals were nowhere to be found in their usual sunning spot. We’ve arrived at our destination.✨ Thank you for joining me on this unforgettable walk! Don’t forget to subscribe and tap the notification bell to stay updated on all the latest walking tours!
