Visit of HIROSHIMA in 2 Days | Peace Memorial Park, day trip to MIYAJIMA | Japan Travel Vlog [7/12]

HIROSHIMA – A Summer In Japan #7 July 2023 We grabbed Ekibens to eat in the shinkansen from Osaka to Hiroshima Unagi bento for me! (eel) Arriving at our guest house in the early afternoon J-HOPPERS HIROSHIMA GUESTHOUSE We’re staying in a dorm room this time to maintain our budget The bed pods are cozy and well separated, there are people of all ages in our dorm and everyone is very friendly We’ll be sleeping 2 nights in this guesthouse It’s located very close to the Peace Memorial Park, which we’re going to visit next HIROSHIMA PEACE MEMORIAL PARK Hiroshima is tragically known for being the 1st city in the world to undergo a nuclear attack on August 6th 1945 The A-bomb dropped by the American army to end WWII killed 140000 persons and erased the city Since its reconstruction, Hiroshima aims to be a city of peace and pleads for the end of nuclear weapons ‘The Peace Flame’ has been lit since 1964 and it will continue burning until the world is free from nuclear threats Cenotaph holding the names of the victims HIROSHIMA PEACE MEMORIAL MUSEUM I was not feeling like filming inside the museum, but it’s an absolute must see The scenography of the exhibition is very well done, it’s an heartbreaking yet important visit to do Where the park now stands used to be the busiest district of downtown Hiroshima A-BOMB DOME This monument used to be the Prefectural Industrial Promotion Hall It was located just 150 meters away from the bomb hypocenter It’s the only building that remained partially standing after the explosion On a more joyful note, it’s now time for dinner! We want to try the local version of the okonomiyaki HASSEI Unlike the Osaka version, the Hiroshima version has noodles in it Also, the batter is not mixed with the cabbage, but there’s a thin pancake on top of and under the filling And let’s not forget the fried egg! Looks delicious, bon appétit! For our 2nd day, we’re going on a day trip to Miyajima Island The boat crossing from Miyajimaguchi Ferry Terminal is quite easy It’s a short 10 min trip Useful info: the JR Ferry ticket is included in your JR Pass if you have one (200 yens otherwise) We can quickly catch sight of the famous floating torii gate The small island of Itsukushima, commonly known as Miyajima, is considered a sacred island Miyajima Pier / Ferry Terminal This is the big torii gate of Itsukushima Shrine, but we’ll visit the shrine later in the day When the tide is low, you can walk to the feet of the torii gate With people for scale, you get to realize how tall it actually is Really impressive and majestic monument! Miyajima is renowned for its red maple tree landscapes in the Autumn season So in Miyajima Omotesando Shopping Street, you’ll find several shops like this one They sell the famous ‘momiji manju’ It’s a little cake in the shape of a maple leaf with an azuki jam filling Momiji manju They have other tastes like chocolate or custard I think my favourite is the matcha one! Like Nara, Miyajima has sacred deers peacefully living alongside tourists and inhabitants But on contrary to Nara, it’s not allowed to feed these ones, and they are a bit more shy MIYAJIMA ROPEWAY From Miyajima Pier, it’s a 25 min walk to Miyajima Ropeway We took a one way ticket, and we’ll walk down on the way back Our initial plan was to hike all the way to the top of Mount Misen But we don’t have enough time, and also it’s way too hot today At the arrival of the ropeway is Shishiiwa Observatory The view to Hiroshima Bay is already quite nice Mount Misen Lunch time: onigiri with a view! For an even better viewpoint, it’s an additional 30 min walk to the top of Mount Misen Mount Misen being a holy mountain, you’ll find various spiritual sites on the way up Today is probably the hottest day we’ve had so far in Japan, so we’re glad there’s a bit of shade on the hiking trail With an altitude of 535 meters, Mount Misen is the highest point of the island Finally arriving at Mount Misen Observatory The panoramic view is indeed gorgeous We get to see well Miyajima’s primeval forest, which is protected by the prefecture Shishiiwa Observatory Miyajima Pier Now time to go down following the Daisho-in direction A mountain frog! DAISHO-IN TEMPLE It took us a bit less than 1 hour of walking down to reach the surroundings of Daisho-in The temple is surrounded by maple trees, this place must be incredible in Autumn This creature from the Japanese folklore with a whole on the top of the head is a kappa To access the temple, you can take a path made of hundreds of little monk statues They are ‘jizos’, protective deities of children, travellers and pilgrims Daisho-in was founded in 806 by Kukei, a well-known Japanese Buddhist monk, making it the main temple of Miyajima These glass bells are called ‘furin’, they are usually hung during Summer Their crystal sound and the sight of them dancing in the wind is said to have a cooling effect during the hot Summer days And it’s true that visiting this nice temple is bringing us a bit of freshness after a long walk in the sun On the way back to the floating torii gate, we’re making a quick detour to Momijidani Park Momijidani Bridge Love the sound of Japanese cicadas, it always saddens me to see a dead one on the ground Surpisingly, it’s the late afternoon right now and we’re the only visitors Which makes the place very peaceful Back in Miyajima Omotesando Shopping Street for a well deserved kakigori with yuzu syrup (shaved ice dessert) We kept our last visit for the end of the day so that we can enjoy it at golden hour ITSUKUSHIMA-JINJA The tide is quickly rising up again It’s not possible to approach the big torii by foot anymore But visiting the floating shrine offers gorgeous views of it This elegant shrine on the water is the main Shinto monument of the island It’s dedicated to the 3 goddesses of seas and storms It’s really worth staying for the sunset on the floating torii, it just started and it’s so beautiful already End of these 2 days, we loved our stay in Hiroshima and Miyajima! And now on our way for the island of Kyushu! Next Destination: KUMAMOTO
