Spring in Okayama – Cherry Blossoms, Castle & Serene Gardens

Today, we’re exploring the area around Okayama Castle. Okayama Castle isn’t open yet, but we can enter Ujo Park, where the castle is located. Passing right beside Okayama Castle, we head to Okayama Korakuen, which opens early in the morning. Okayama, known as the “Sunny Land.” Today is another perfect day! Across this bridge is Korakuen Garden, and just before it is Ujo Park with Okayama Castle. We can see Okayama Castle from here! Let’s buy our tickets and enter Korakuen Garden. “Okayama Korakuen” Korakuen Garden is one of Japan’s top three gardens. From winding streams throughout the garden, to the large central pond and spacious lawns, you can enjoy elegant views along with Okayama Castle. Many koi fish are gracefully swimming here. Birds, too! They seem quite friendly. Various plants are carefully maintained, offering breathtaking views no matter when you visit. Fresh greenery in summer, autumn leaves in fall, snow scenes in winter… and stunning cherry blossoms in spring. It’s like walking through a tunnel of cherry blossoms. I’m sure the birds are also enjoying the blossoms. Korakuen Garden on a spring morning was quiet and beautiful. I’d love to visit again during other seasons or at night. “Okayama Castle” Now, let’s head inside the castle. It was recently renovated, and the interior looks amazing. These golden “shachihoko” symbolize protection against fires. The castle houses many exhibits that tell stories of its history. Japanese swords. (They feel heavy to us today!) People back then must have been really strong. Okayama is famous for its peaches. Have you heard the Japanese folktale “Momotaro”? This folktale has deep ties to Okayama. Let’s take a short break, enjoying the view of Okayama Castle, and then head to our next destination. “Asahikawa Sakura Path” It seems there’s a festival happening today! Chewy potato fries, octopus tempura, nostalgic ice cream, oden… We decided on oyster okonomiyaki. This was definitely the most luxurious cherry blossom viewing this year. Now, heading off to a temple a little further away. “Sogenji Temple” It’s a large temple nestled within a residential area. Let’s pass through this historic gate. As we walk further in… What a magnificent weeping cherry tree! The reflection of cherry blossoms on the rippling water is truly enchanting. This weeping cherry tree is said to be over 80 years old. The interplay of light and nature creates a spectacular scene. It’s incredibly calming. Cherry blossoms bloom beautifully every year without fail. They bring joy to many people, and there’s a poignant beauty in their fleeting petals. Every year during this season, their blooms move us deeply. Here’s hoping we can see them again next year with the people we cherish.
