What a new House and new Baby in Japan is like

so we’ve got a new baby and a new house in the family so today I’m back at my Japanese wife’s Jika Hi and I’ve got some big news for all of you let’s start from the beginning so my wife’s sister Eddie Chun just had a baby in Japan you might remember her from a while back in my day in the life of a Japanese car repair worker or even more recently her wedding video anyway right before the birth they also bought a newly built house in II so after a three-hour shinkansen ride from Tokyo we’re finally here to visit them for the first time oh there’s Junior hello [Music] and here he is their baby boy and my nephew-in-law he’s 1 month old now and was actually born prematurely and had to stay in NICU luckily after a few weeks they were able to bring him to his new home and they’ve been grateful for every moment they’ve been able to spend together since he’s been home eddie John have you been playing video games lately what were you playing again cool you must be really good oh how good are you were you ever ranked damn you are good [Music] do you mind showing me around all right let’s tour the brand new two-story Japanese style home it’s a 4 LDK meaning four rooms plus a living dining and kitchen area with a total floor space of 153 m about 1,650 ft the house with the land all included was about 37 million yen and with all of the fixture options they added it came out to be around 40 million yen about $277,000 total in Japan it’s quite common to see brand new homes built and sold together with a land as a package these are known as tate uri jutaku houses constructed in advance specifically for sale so this is the main entrance and you can see that they actually have a closet here which is kind of convenient so you can put all of your jacket sports equipment or anything that you usually take to go outside just right here so it’s always available for you and obviously like any Japanese house you take your shoes off when you go inside so this is an additional tatami room downstairs just on the opposite side of the kitchen and living space oh how much would it cost interesting [Music] this one is actually the same washing machine we have in our house just a little bit newer model and I would say it’s one of my favorite devices in our whole entire house and I think I’ve said it many many times but just having a washer and a dryer all in one unit makes everything so convenient you put all the clothes in dirty and when it comes out everything is dry and fluffy perfect for you to wear or fold also one of my favorite features in this guy is right here is that you can put all of the detergent and the softener preloaded so that you don’t have to keep on refilling it you just press the buttons say how many you want and automatically does it on the display so so nice so Japanese baths are another thing that I love basically if you ever want to have a bath all you have to do is press a few buttons it’ll automatically fill the water to the right level you want and it’ll actually heat everything up so it’s like the perfect temperature and what’s cool about this one it actually has a seat so you can just like sit down and chill one common feature of Japanese bathrooms is a built-in air conditioner with a laundry dryer function it’s especially useful in Japan’s extreme climates you can hang your laundry here to quickly dry super convenient during the rainy season especially for homes with only a washing machine and no dryer [Music] now the second floor so this is the master bedroom and as you can see they have the baby crib right there that’s dope it also comes with a walk-in closet and a [Music] desk/counter so this is another spare bedroom and look just right here it looks like they have a balcony so let’s check it out okay so it looks like this balcony just wraps around the second floor of the house so at what age would you give your son his own room [Music] that’s pretty typical in Japan hey are you practicing the Japanese wash this is one of my favorite things in a [Music] home and here is another spare bedroom so I think in total they have three spare bedrooms that they’re not using at the moment so they’ve got more than enough space to grow but you know what’s actually kind of cool are these door holders that hold the door in place it’s all magnets and it’s just easy to release look at that it holds the door in place pretty cool and this is the kitchen he said the back area was empty so they paid extra for the built-in counter which is also earthquake proof just like the entire house and given that they have a baby I’m sure all the extra storage will be appreciated one of my favorite things about this countertop is that you can pull out the devices and this one even has an exhaust fan or a cooling fan I guess the house also came with a typical Japanese stove a spacious sink and even a dishwasher and check it out there’s even a storage in the floor once you go in you won’t be able to come out and here they have a cool little backyard and apparently Junior laid out all of this gravel by himself he says it cost about $1,700 if done by professionals but he diyed it himself and cut it down to only materials $170 was it difficult to get a loan oh wow when he got their housing loan the percentage was 0.385% quite typical in Japan so before through the town is he asleep he likes bills on the bus so how was the delivery it’s nice to raise a baby in a new house huh in Japan there’s a tradition called sat giant where new mothers return to their parents’ home for childirth and postpartum recovery the grandparents help with the meals housework and baby care so the mother can focus on healing usually 1 to 3 months while the husband works in Eddie Chan’s case though her mom lives nearby and is able to visit for daily support but as more Japanese have kids later in life many grandparents are becoming too old to help this is one reason why the Japanese government now provides support services like home visits for postpartum helpers also valuable for new parents without family nearby so how long did it take you to find this house dang that’s fast is there anything you don’t like about the house what do you mean she says that they had to measure their furniture and home appliances exactly in order to plan how to bring them in because of how narrow the entrance area is he sleeps really well though you guys are so lucky [Music] so while the baby sleeps family is just going to have a little bit of lunch for lunch we ordered delivery because it’s just too much trouble to go out when the baby is sleeping i got the quarter pounder see how big it is guys look at this wow look at this burger it’s literally as big as my head oh my god i don’t even There’s four patties wow that’s actually really good so Eddie Chan is currently on maternity leave and may take parental leave afterwards in Japan the government supports 50 to 70% of income during maternity leave along with a onetime child birth allowance of $500,000 yen about $3,500 although the system is well established Japan’s birth rate is now at its lowest point due to various factors such as workplace culture often making maternity leave difficult the increase in dual homes blur gender roles and low salaries not meeting the increased cost of children hey Junior I brought you a gift my premium hot sauce junior is still working full-time but he goes above and beyond to support at home changing diapers and doing his share of the baby chores when he can that said Japan still holds onto a deep rooted tradition that typical Japanese men should prioritize work while women handle the kids and household it’s a mindset that’s been slow to shift even as younger generations begin to challenge these roles it’s still common to see full-time working moms shouldering most of their responsibilities at home to help change that the government has promoted paternity leave but social norms haven’t quite caught up only about 17% of men actually take it and even then most are back on the job in less than a week in any case Eddie Chan Junior and the baby look like they have a bright and healthy future ahead of them in their new house and I’m sure you’ll see them again in a future video as both of our families grow up together all right so I’m going to close the video out here thank you guys so much for being part 1. Congrats, very cute baby! Love their new house, and wow, the interest rate is crazy low. In Canada, you cannot even buy a condo for that price.

  2. 3 spare bedrooms! Good, have more kids. Save japan from needing immigration. Once you get immigration, japan is finished

  3. I’m happy to see a house in Japan with a nice kitchen. Some of those apartment kitchens are so tiny. What a cute house and adorable family.

  4. lmao omg Pabolo! My heart start to hurt just looking at your burger sandwich. @.@;; Congrats to your sister-in-law and brother-in-law! Their little one and home are so beautiful!

  5. Just got back from japan and was walking through shibuya and we randomly saw one of your hot sauce machines i chuckled.

  6. My advice to everyone is this : if you want to grow big this year especially in your finances. Be willing to make investments. Saving is great but investing puts you on a pedestal where you wouldnt have to worry about savings as you do now. Thanks to larysa Caba, my portolio is doing really great and im proud of the decisions i made last year.
