Highlights of a Traditional Japanese Inn Stay | Best Accommodation & Food in Japan | Nakasendo Trail

Staying in a traditional Japanese inn was such a memorable experience & imho a must-do for a #NakasendoTrail adventure!✨

🛌 Our room, with its charming shoji sliding doors & other quintessential Japanese-style decor, was a countryside haven. I loved waking up to the sound of a nearby stream & views of the surrounding greenery.🌿

🍙 A big highlight for us was the home-style, farm-to-table meals – SO impressed that most ingredients (Iike the veggies, fish, rice & green tea) were from their own farms!👏🏻 The food was simple & had minimal seasoning, but it filled us with warmth.💓 I also enjoyed their homemade doburoku (a type of sake)!

🏠 Fun facts: A Japanese prince once stayed at the house, which has been owned by the host family for ~130 years old & was originally used for silkworm farming.

👨🏻 The host seemed really busy but always kindly answered my many questions, and he spoke good English too – thank you!

📍 #Tsutamuraya #つたむらや, #Nagano, #Japan (near #Tsumago)
💸 We paid ~A$220/20,000 yen for 2 people for 1 night, including dinner and breakfast (amazing value!)
📅 Definitely book as early as you can, accommodation on the Nakasendo trail seemed hard to get.
🛀🏻 The bathrooms are private but shared among guests (didn’t bother us though; it was clean & we never waited long).
