💭 I’ve been listening to Japanese music since 2014 but never really got into J-Pop. Reason being, I was a HUGE K-Pop fan.
KPop has been wayy more accessible, both digitally and musically, making it easy to listen to and interact with. But as I’ve grown, I’ve come to notice the over-saturation of the K-Pop industry, petty drama and cultural insensitivities, and current groups being targeted to its original audience: teens. Although Japan also has its issues with cultural insensitivities and drama, I’ve noticed their growing efforts in creating opportunities for all music and identities.

For example, I’ve always been impressed with LDH’s mission of representation. Probably not intentional but LDH has always had mixed members in their groups (Exile’s Nesmith, Sandaime JSB’s Elly and his brother, The Rampage’s Likiya, Generations Member Alan and former Generations member Mandy, Psychic Fever’s Jimmy and Weesa, Wolf Howl Harmony’s GHEE, TJBB’s Aeron, etc.) , something I’ve NEVER seen in K-Pop. I hope with Sweet Revenge, they can reach global audiences and become as popular as f5ve, XG or even KATSEYE.

In general, Japan’s main audience will always be Japanese, especially with acts like AKB48, Mrs. Green Apple, Gen Hoshino, SnowMan, SixTones, Naniwa Danshi, etc. But I think they’re finally catching up to current trends in terms of style and accessibility overall. Acts like Creepy Nuts, Ado, Yoasobi, ONE OK ROCK, Fujii Kaze and number_i have definitely taken note to reach a more global audience while still finding major success in Japan — the aforementioned acts also following suit.

What do you all think about Japan’s efforts in attracting a global audience?
