Multiple media outlets in Australia say a Japanese soccer player in the country’s top professional league has been arrested on suspicion of sports gambling-related offenses.
Danzaki Riku, a midfielder for the A-League Men’s club Western United, has been accused of manipulating betting outcomes.
Some soccer fans in Australia bet on which players would get yellow or red cards.
Private broadcaster Channel 9 reports that Danzaki intentionally received yellow cards during matches in April and May.
Another player from a different club was also arrested. Both have reportedly since been released.
Western United said on its website on Monday that it was “shocked and disappointed,” though it did not mention the player’s name.
The club said it condemns any actions that compromise the club and the integrity of the game.
Danzaki had previously played in Japan’s professional soccer league.
