Nike’s running archives are full of classic silhouettes that defined their eras and the Swoosh as a whole. One of these is the Waffle Racer, which features the waffle traction pattern invented by Bill Bowerman, which has become a signature part of Nike’s identity. Though running tech has advanced considerably since the ‘70s, Nike loves to look back at the sneakers that paved the way for modern runners, as is the case with the upcoming Pegasus 41 Tokyo World Athletics.
Coming as part of a larger capsule celebrating the upcoming World Athletics Championship in Tokyo, Japan, the series sees Nike harken back to vintage and archival performance runners and apply their design details to modern silhouettes. We got our first glimpse at this when images of a Pre Montreal-inspired Vaporfly 4 emerged last week, and when photos of the Pegasus Premium Forrest Gump, inspired by the Nike Cortez, landed online weeks back. But now with a third pair, it’s obvious what Nike is doing for the event.

As for this Peg 41, The Swoosh takes inspiration from the aforementioned Waffle Racer, one of the brand’s premier runners in the ‘70s, for its color palette and the added faux-overlays. The engineered mesh and performance-oriented materials remain, but a paint job makes the upper appear to carry the same overlays and logos as the original Waffle Racer. This includes the large Swoosh, the vintage Nike text on the tongue tag, and contrasting mudguards and heel overlays. Down below sits a Peg 41 foam midsole with ReactX and Air Zoom cushioning in a crema hue paired with a black outsole.
The Nike Pegasus 41 Tokyo World Athletics will release September 10, 2025, through Nike and select retailers online and in-store. Available in men’s sizing, the retail price is set at $150.
