Skiing in Japan Guide – (North Japan – Niseko, Rusutsu, Furano Ski Resorts)
So skiing in Japan is an awesome experience. It’s an awesome country to ski in, and there’s definitely some great snow days you can get, especially when it actually snows. So in this video, I want to cover off some five things that I wish I knew when I went skiing the first time in Japan and consequently after that as well. So let’s get straight to the video. All right, so first thing I wanted to talk about is visiting some of the smaller skiing villages. Nicole, yes, it’s an awesome place to visit. It’s very foreigner friendly. a lot of hotels, easy to book, etc. However, in the end, it is still very busy and you will probably be waiting in long lines, especially if you are going during the peak time. Whilst the smaller villages just have something extra to it, Japan, Japan has awesome quality in everything, right? And this applies to their ski villages and towns. And Fano, for example, and jutsu were great places to ski. Less lines as well. Like I literally rocked up the hill then down a mountain and instantly into the ski li ski lift and up I go again and it was just an awesome experience overall. So don’t discount the smaller places. So make sure you take a look. Make sure you just plan your ski trip. Yes, you can go once but don’t discount the smaller ones. Now on that note, number two is some of these small skiing villages you do need to bring some cash. A lot of the food places if you are planning to eat there during lunch simply just don’t have card for some reason. So, you do need to win some cash. This is just an extra tip just in case you forgot to bring any cash and you’re super hungry. Well, you might be out of luck in terms of actually paying for food. So, just something to keep in mind. Number three, which kind of applies to the tip number one, is really I think just book a car. Japan is an awesome place to drive. It is super easy to drive. It’s one of the easiest places to drive that I’ve been to and I drive around everywhere I go. It’s even from northern to southern hemisphere wherever I go. The biggest thing that I wanted to note with Japan is when you book a car in especially in a snow snowy area, you are automatically given snow tires. So no need to snow chain up. I know a lot of people actually hate, you know, getting out of the car, snow chaining and stuff like that. In Japan, you get snow tires and the roads are super well groomed. So you don’t need to like hop out of car, do snow chains and stuff like that. You can just get a car, hop straight to the mountain parking, and just park there and you’re good to go. It is super simple. And the other big tip around this tip is the fact that booking accommodation outside of the resort area is so much cheaper. We booked a really nice Airbnb and it was like half the price of needing to book a hotel and the area was bigger as well. And the fact is when you have a car, you can go outside the resort for food and stuff like that. So really, in my opinion, book a car. It will help so much. Especially anything you do, even like for example lugging or your ski equipment, everything makes it so much easier. Book a car in Japan. Just something to note, you do potentially need an international driver license, so make sure you check that before you do book a car. The tip number four is about food. In my opinion, reserving ahead of time is probably necessary, especially if you’re in a busy area like Nicole, because unfortunately restaurants there are really packed, especially in peakout times. And if you have a larger group, which you’re probably skiing with a larger group, you probably will need to reserve ahead. We had a group of six and we actually had to hop around different restaurants before we ended up luckily finding one. But we spent a lot of time just hopping around and realizing we needed to reserve ahead of time. So keep that in mind. Definitely reserve your restaurants ahead of time. And another point on food is if you don’t want to eat food or don’t want to eat at a restaurant, don’t want to eat food, you can simply go to the convenience store. And during the convenience stores around 5 to 6:00 p.m. periods, they do do discounts on food. So keep that in mind, especially if you just want to save money on food and eat at a convenience store because I mean convenience store food is pretty good in as well. Finally, I want to talk about onsons. Most people who go to Japan will visit a onson, especially in winter. And the thing with onsons in Japan is there’s so many different rules. So, I highly recommend checking rules ahead of time. For example, some of the smaller onsons in smaller towns might not allow people who have tattoos. However, some of the bigger ones which are foreigner friendly like Nissor do allow um having tattoos. So, keep that in mind. Also, some onens are only hotel guests allowed. So some of the onsons can only be used by hotel guests at certain times for example. So make sure you do your due diligence before instead of just instead of thinking that okay I can just hop in on whenever I want. So plan it out. Make sure you just check the rules beforehead because it will help you in the long run especially if you do want to relax in the end of the day at an onen. And that is it in this video. I’ve actually made another video in versutu if you interested in that video. But skiing is an awesome thing in Japan. But these are just five things which I wish I knew when I first went to Japan for skiing. And hopefully these tips help you really ace your next Japanese adventure. And once again, don’t forget to like, subscribe for more content around Japan. And I’ll see you in the next video.
