A peaceful day in Teshima

Today we’re heading from Naoshima to nearby island Teshima for our last day on the Art Islands. It’s been such an incredible chill and relaxing time so far and I’m really looking forward to seeing the art around Teshima. We took a smaller passenger boat from Naoshima’s Miyanoura port to Teshima’s Ieura port and from here, we hopped on their local bus. Definitely look up the bus schedule before arriving because they are very timely. and we’ll leave right on the dot. This bus was one of the first scheduled rides of the day at 10:05 and the driver literally had a clock down to the second ready to close the door and head out to the next stop. After leaving our luggage in storage at the ferry port, we took the local bus to Teshima Art Museum. Drove by some olive trees. Most people rent bikes or e-bikes to get around the island but we weren’t confident in our skills and the bus stops near the places we wanted to visit. Also the roads are very narrow & steep so we don’t recommend biking if you’re not an expert. The Teshima Terraced Rice Field Project We got off the bus at 10:20am, just in time for our 10:30am museum tickets. We’re in Teshima today. We just got off the ferry and took the bus to Teshima Art Museum and we just checked in. And I love how you have to take a little nature walk before you go see art because I feel like the real art is nature. I love how all these art spaces just like incorporate art and nature and I’m really looking forward to it! No outside shoes or electronics are allowed inside. We spent almost an hour inside. It was a beautiful space to reflect and unplug. Checking out the cafe now. We ordered a hot cocoa, hot coffee, and two rice muffins. The rice muffins were so good! I think I’m going to try to recreate them at home. The cafe was pretty busy when we arrived but emptied out after a little while. We’re going to walk down the hill to Karato Port. We did see a very bad bike accident in this spot at the end of the day. So PLEASE be careful whether you bike or walk! Lots of little gardens here. Gotta be pretty self sufficient on islands This area is known for their lemons as well. I accidentally got a cold coffee instead of a hot one. It was nice to sit down and rest our feet for a moment. “Beware of wild boar” Airball from AKINYEMI lol Kayli made it on the first try We were trying to make it in 2 hoops in a row Yay! AKINYEMI is a little rusty FINALLY! One more for good measure It’s starting to snow I think? A little bit of snow is falling We stumbled upon this little cake shop What drew us inside was the homemade cake & Japanese nostalgic coffee Hand drip coffee just hits different We also ordered their seasonal apple pound cake which was also incredibly delicious. A perfect sweet treat and pick me up before we continue on our journey. “So good! おいしいです” We’ll definitely visit again next time we’re on the island! We really enjoyed walking between the art installations We’re heading to our last stop of the day This place archives heartbeats of people throughout the world. There’s a room where you can hear the heartbeats with strobing light bulbs And you can even add your own heartbeat recording to the archive. We are taking the bus back to Ieura Port to catch the 4:35pm ferry. Since we have some time before the ferry departs, we’re going to check out the Teshima Marche. They have locally grown citrus & fruits and some cute crochet pieces that were on display. Inside they have souvenirs and locally made products We bought some of this local olive oil We picked up our bags from storage and now it’s time to board the ferry! This has been such an incredible experience visiting the art islands and I’m so grateful we were able to take the time to really soak it in and experience art and nature. Although it was a little chilly when we were here in February, I’m so grateful we were able to visit during low season because the experience was so serene and calm and really encouraged us to unplug and connect with the islands and the people there. And I really hope we can come back again soon. and see the other parts that we weren’t able to see this time and meet more people. And hopefully by then, we’ll know how to speak the language a little better as well. After a long day of walking around the island, we hopped on the ferry back to Uno. where we took a train to Okayama where we’ll stay for the night. After checking into our hotel, we headed out to dinner. We were in the mood for sashimi They didn’t speak much English but we just ordered what they recommended Also added in our favorites: salmon & hamachi The fish was delicious but we were still a little hungry Going to walk around a little and find another bite to eat. Curry sounded good so we popped in here before they closed. We shared one katsu curry and it was good! Only staying one night in Okayama. Back at our hotel & headed to their onsen. The large baths are open all night from 3pm to 9am! After we relaxed in the bath, we used their massage chairs lol This was a pretty affordable hotel & right near the station. Treating ourselves to a sweet treat. Oyasuminasai! Woke up to a beautiful snow flurry! Snow like this is not too common here in Okayama. Since we live in LA now, we had fun walking through the snow! Taking a quick shinkansen ride to Kobe. Thank you for following along on our Japan trip so far and we’ll see you in the next video when we go to Kobe and eat some incredible pastries from some of the best bakers in the world. See you there.

We spent a day in Teshima for our last full day visiting Japan’s Art Islands. We unplugged in the serene landscapes, lost track of time in the immersive art spaces, and stumbled upon a secret cake shop serving up old school pour over coffee.
