Taking the Extreme Onsen Challenge π
If you’ve always wanted to try a Japanese onen, but you heard you can’t enter with tattoos, this could be the perfect trip for you. Amazing. This is the extreme onsen challenge. It’s a 3-hour roundtrip hike up an active volcano to soak in a wild onen river at the top. Woo! Maybe too extreme. Very extreme. The Numajini area is a beautiful place, although it does kind of translate to swamp. The steaming hot water here is piped down directly to the onen hotels at the foot of the mountain, so you know you’re bathing at a real hotring. If you’re looking for an extreme experience during your time in Japan, see the caption for details.
Ready to take on Japanβs craziest hot spring adventure? This is Numajiri Motoyu β a wild onsen deep in the hills of Mt. Adatara. No staff, no entry fee β just pure volcanic power and untouched nature waiting to be discovered.
Renowned for its water quality, this area boasts the highest natural hot spring flow by pure tonnage in all of Japan. The steaming waters mix with natural mountain streams, creating open-air hot spring rivers to soothe your muscles after the scenic hike to the top.
