The Torii Gate Floating in the Pacific Ocean

A vermilion torii gate on its own little island in the Pacific Ocean – why not visit Bentenjima?

Bentenjima is one of Iwaki’s most beautiful scenic spots and well worth a visit if you’re in town. A bridge was first built here in 1933, allowing access to the shrine irrespective of high or low tide. From that point on, it was a well-visited spot, especially in summer, while it’s also a popular spot to watch the sunrise on New Year’s Day as it looks out east over the Pacific Ocean.

The rocks on the cove can get quite slippery thanks to seawater, so take care when approaching the torii gate. Also be aware: it’s said those who take pebbles home from the beach here will suffer from eye problems later in life!

📍 Benten-jima Island, Yokouchi-9 Hisanohamamachi Tanoami, Iwaki, Fukushima 979-0335
