A magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck off the coast of Kushiro in Japan’s northern island of Hokkaido on Saturday at 14:07 local time, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA). The quake occurred at a depth of 20 km (12 miles). No tsunami warning was issued.

The main tremor was followed by a series of aftershocks. A magnitude 4.4 quake hit the same region at 14:19, followed by a magnitude 3.5 off the coast of Shikoku at 16:45, and another magnitude 4.7 off Kushiro at 17:07.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries. Authorities continue to monitor the situation for further seismic activity.
