Let me share a secret—of all the mountains I’ve explored across the Japanese archipelago over the decades, Mt. Moriyoshi remains my best. It may not be the most dramatic peak, with its gently sloping conical form, yet it embodies the essence of Japan’s natural splendor.
Mt. Moriyoshi is also steeped in the legend of the Matagi hunters, whose unique culture and history continue to echo through these rugged landscapes. The mountain’s valleys offer excellent trout fishing—a perfect complement to an immersive experience in the wild. To truly appreciate its beauty and spirit, a stay of a couple of days is highly recommended.
