Mako Komuro, formerly Princess Mako of Japan, has just entered a new chapter in life: motherhood. According to the Japanese magazine Jesei Seven, the ex-royal and her husband, Kei Komuro, reportedly welcomed their first child a few weeks ago. In the published images, Mako and Komuro are seen walking with a baby stroller in a residential neighborhood of New York, where the two settled following their wedding and Mako’s abnegation of her royal title and duties.

Mako and Komuro met when they were both studying at Gakushuin University in Tokyo. Their relationship began in 2012 and although they were engaged six years later, they waited another three years to get married. The civil ceremony took place on October 26, 2021 and at that time, the niece of the Emperor Naruhito was removed from any public duties on behalf of the Japanese imperial family, adopting the surname of her husband. In addition, she waived her corresponding dowry, about 150 million yen, approximately $1.35 million.
After the wedding, in November 2021, the princess settled with her husband in New York, where he graduated from Fordham University that same year and began working in a law firm. There they began a new, essentially anonymous life in a small apartment they rented for about $4,500 a month in Hell’s Kitchen.
Little to nothing is known about the life 33-year-old Mako has been leading in the city. In the few images that have been captured of her, she can be seen shopping in neighborhoods like Chelsea and Soho as well as strolling through flea markets, Amish Market (known for its locally sourced organic fare) as well as browsing for second-hand clothes and vintage pieces. The ex-princess moves around the city like any other citizen and goes from one place to another by public transport.
