【Battleship Island (Hashima)】Over 100-Year-Old Island City with a Peak Population of 5,259
I explored the area around Battleship Island (Hashima) and the nearby uninhabited island by boat.
The about 50 buildings, including Japan’s oldest reinforced concrete structure (since 1916), were abandoned and left uninhabited in 1974 with the end of the coal industry. Since then, they have continued to be battered by the rough waves of the open sea, leading to ongoing deterioration. It is uncertain how many more years this incredible fortress will remain. I went to photograph the island’s perimeter, choosing a day when the waves were calm. Along the way, I explored the mysterious uninhabited island next to Hashima Island (Battleship Island), called Nakanoshima Island.
