It was a while ago, but I went to Okayama and Hiroshima around March. The reason for the trip was a great deal ticket called “Osaka Departure Good Places Discovery Ticket”, but when I looked up tourist destinations, there were so many places I wanted to go to that I left on an early morning Shinkansen. (Even so, there were a few places I gave up on…) This time, it’s Okayama and Kurashiki. I saw a lot of different scenery, so I hope you enjoy it with me. I’m going to head to Korakuen right away by tram. The bridge you can see from here is the “Tsukimi Bridge” that connects Korakuen and Okayama Castle. When I got close, I saw that it was a pretty big bridge. It was cloudy, but the morning sun was reflected on the river surface and it was very beautiful. I made the mistake of buying a ticket only for Korakuen, even though there is a set ticket that includes Okayama Castle 😭 I ‘ll pull myself together and enjoy Korakuen! Inside, it’s very spacious, and the airy scenery is very calming. The large pond reflects the sky and the garden, and it feels like there are two worlds. The view from Yuishinzan is truly spectacular. It was early in the morning and there were not many people, so I felt like I had the garden all to myself. It’s still early spring and there are no flowers, but this somewhat desolate atmosphere is also wonderful. I wonder if the feudal lord who created this garden also looked at this view from here. I liked the “Nagareten” (not a shop but a resting place for the feudal lord and guests) at first sight . There is a waterway in the middle and various stones are lined up, which is very elegant and beautiful. I would like to spend a hot summer day here just staring at the garden. The plum grove ranges from those that are just starting to bloom to those that are about 80% in bloom. I like the way the plum branches stretch upwards powerfully. There were also red-crowned cranes! Apparently they also take walks around the garden during the New Year. I would like to see them flying in this garden. I haven’t finished looking around yet, but I have plans so I’m about to leave. It was a quiet, relaxed place that soothed my mind. I would like to come here again when I want to look at the wide view and sky and lose myself in contemplation. (There are red-crowned cranes on the boats where we left!) We are now heading to Okayama Castle. This is the first time I’ve seen a black castle. It’s cool. It looks even more majestic up close. It’s also known as the “Crow Castle.” The small windows in the walls are designed to be used to aim at enemies outside, with the circle representing a gun and the square representing a bow and arrow. It’s very functional. I thought it was a very beautiful castle, and it was just completed a major renovation in 2022. The inside of the castle has been renovated to look like a museum. The shachihoko is so big and impressive when you see it up close! Okayama Castle has had three different feudal lords! I learned a lot about history, such as that. There is also a lot of armor. People in the past were quite small. There is an experience space where you can actually lift a sword. I tried holding one myself, and it was so heavy that I couldn’t imagine even a wakizashi could be swung around… There was also a matchlock gun. It was surprisingly heavy! I was surprised at how detailed and beautiful the carvings were. I wasn’t familiar with the history of Okayama Castle, but I learned a lot. There were many exhibits and a corner where you could actually try things out, and it was unexpectedly fun. After this, I’ll be traveling by train, but before that, there’s one shop I want to stop by. It’s a bakery run by a former French chef, located close to Okayama Station. I found this shop when I was researching bakeries around Okayama Station in advance. I was looking forward to it because I heard that the dough was delicious and that it had a new texture. I get excited when I see all the bread lined up. I’ll tell you (because it looks delicious), but this bakery was really delicious. I love it so much that I ordered it online as soon as I got back from my trip. Everything I eat, whether it’s salty or sweet, is really delicious. I want to go back again. I’m back at Okayama Station. It’s just under 20 minutes by train from here to Kurashiki. As I pass through the shopping district near the station, a view that makes me feel like I’ve traveled back in time unfolds before me. A wonderful, atmospheric view! There are a lot of interesting places, but before that, we will have lunch 😋 Okayama is close to Kagawa, so there are many udon restaurants that serve bukkake udon, but this restaurant is popular for its “maze udon,” so I was looking forward to seeing what it was like. When there is a “limited time” or “seasonal” dish, I get excited and tend to order it. The open ceiling and thick beams create a great atmosphere. This is the seasonal “Maze Udon with Shirasu, Chives, and Olive Oil (Hot).” The noodles are firm and chewy. The noodles are thin, so the strong broth is just right. My husband, who loves eggplant tempura, ordered “Maze Udon with Egg and Miso with Egg Tempura (Cold).” The smooth thin noodles go perfectly with the crispy tempura. Both were very delicious udon. Thank you for the meal. Is it possible that the udon in Okayama Prefecture is of a high standard…? I’m curious about other restaurants too. Speaking of Kurashiki, this “river boat ride” is an impression. I wanted to ride it if I could, but the tickets were already sold out. It’s true that they sell out quickly first thing in the morning 😢 But just watching the boats made me feel relaxed. Before I start walking around in earnest, I don’t forget to refuel with sweets. I wanted to try the white peaches from Okayama, the fruit kingdom, even though they’re not in season! This soft serve ice cream is made with Jersey milk from Hiruzen and peach juice from Okayama Prefecture. The soft serve ice cream is very delicious! I recommend the cup instead of the cone. I’d like to come again when it’s in season and try the peach smoothie next time. This bakery uses natural yeast and has a charming storefront. I thought there would be a lot of hard breads, but there is a wide variety of sweet and savory breads. There are so many breads the size of an adult’s hand that it’s hard to choose. The storefront looks like something out of a Ghibli world, and it was a really cute shop. It’s interesting that the buildings in Kurashiki have a different appearance from those in Kyoto and Ishikawa. The alleys are also full of flavor. This is a shop that stocks “the really good things of Okayama and Kurashiki.” All the products are related to the local Okayama area, so it was perfect for choosing souvenirs. By the way, I bought this peach drink, which you mix with carbonated water and drink. It was delicious with no unnecessary ingredients and went well with yogurt. I was also interested in peach juice, and I heard that you can drink it at the shop in the back, so I went through the narrow alley on the side. At the end of the alley was a place like a secret base! The word “fruit” on the noren curtain looks like a record of the growth of peaches and is very cute. It is a museum that clearly conveys the history of fruit production in Okayama. I never knew there were so many varieties of peaches. This is the peach juice that I wanted to try, made with four peaches from Okayama Prefecture! It had a rich flavor that was different from the peach that you eat directly, and it was very delicious. I wanted to buy another souvenir, Bizen ware, which is Okayama pottery. I visited several pottery shops and bought a vase at this shop. I was very happy that the owner explained about Bizen ware in detail. I really like the unique color and texture of Bizen ware. As I had heard beforehand, I think the flowers last quite a long time. Amazing. I took a break at a coffee shop just opposite the Bizen ware shop. This shop inherited the name and building from a kamaboko shop that had been in business for 100 years. Much of the interior seems to have remained the same since the kamaboko shop, and the atmosphere remains in the pillars and floors. The coffee is carefully brewed one cup at a time after receiving an order. The owner is kind enough to draw latte art on the bottom of the lid. The authentic latte was very satisfying to drink! The sun was setting. There was one more place I wanted to go before the sun went down. It is a shrine located at the top of Tsurugatayama Mountain that has been watching over the Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter. The camellia flower water fountain was so pretty. From the temple grounds, you can see the whole city of Kurashiki. The soft light of the setting sun and the gradually darkening sky are truly beautiful. I happened to visit at this time of day, which was the perfect timing. I like the feeling of an emotion lingering in my heart after seeing a beautiful view. Ruminating on the afterglow, I left the shrine with a light-hearted feeling. This day happened to be the first day of the light-up event “Kurashiki Haruyoi Akari.” With the opening announcement, the lights are all lit up at once. As it gets darker, the lights will shine even more. The sun has completely set, and the lights are shining brightly. Every time a boat passes by, the light on the river ripples and sways beautifully. The cityscape of Kurashiki at night is also very beautiful, but we had dinner first. This is a popular yakitori restaurant in the Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter. It was fully booked that day, so it was a good idea to make a reservation. If you make a reservation, you will get the “omakase course”, but you can also order individual items after the course. After the appetizer (I forgot to take a photo), we started with “chisomaki” (wrapped in shiso) and “beef skewers”. “Asparagus rolls” are wrapped in pork belly. They are crispy and delicious. “Chicken dumplings” and “Tori Tare Yaki”. The only grilled chicken in the course is this one. “Energizing skewers” that are very similar to asparagus rolls. Garlic sprouts are wrapped in pork belly. The texture of the garlic sprouts and the punchy flavor go well with the pork belly. Delicious. We finished off with “yakitori”. All the meat was chewy and juicy! We also ordered “chicken skin”, “cartilage”, “chicken skirt steak”, “salted-grilled chicken fillet” and “chicken neck”. All were delicious, but the “energy skewers” were the best. Thank you for the meal. “Haruyoi Akari” is not only by the river, so we took a little walk. “Shadow lights” are eight places in total. We couldn’t see them all, but they all have different designs and are fun. “Haruyoi Fuusen” and “Haruyoi Andon” are fantastic. Indigo-colored Japanese umbrellas unique to Kurashiki, which is famous for denim! Nice colors~ “Haruyoi Takeakari” had very beautiful bamboo lanterns! My favorite was the “Kirikou Akari” and the shadow sparrow in front of Kurashiki Monogatarikan. It was too big to see everything, but it was a very fun event. Good morning. I woke up at 5am because I wanted to see Kurashiki in the morning without people. I was sleepy, but I was able to see a lot of scenery that was worth getting up early. The sound of morning bells from somewhere. I wonder where the bells are coming from? The grounds of this temple are very beautiful, and it was a luxury to have it all to myself. The gradation of the morning is different from the evening, and it is beautiful. The sun is rising little by little. I would like to see more of the street before the sun rises. Kuma no Hinamatsuri! Cute. I didn’t get to see everything around here during the day, and I wish I could have come here when it was open. I think it’s better for tourist spots to be crowded, but I personally don’t like crowds, and I prefer quiet and empty places , so I was very happy to be able to see such a view. It was worth the effort of getting up early, which I ‘m not good at. (However, due to lack of sleep, my brain didn’t work all day that day. lol) I hope I can see many beautiful views at the next place. Now, let’s go to our next destination.
