【Japan】food tour to enjoy 32 gourmet foods in the port city of Hokkaido, Hakodate(Part3)
This is the last day of our three-day Hakodate food tour. Please check out the videos from the first and second days from the links in the description. Good morning. I have free time on the last day. I will be taking the Shinkansen back in the evening, so we left our luggage in a locker at the station. Today is the last day of our trip to Hakodate. The weather is bad, but I will go around eating local gourmet food today as well. I take the Hakodate tram to the Motomachi area, just like the first day. I get off the tram and head for our destination. The first restaurant we came to is this one. The name of the restaurant is “Restaurant Sekkatei.” I enter from this “Gotoken. ” “Sekkatei” is attached to “Gotoken.” Gotoken was founded in 1879. The building has a very solid feel. It is currently fully booked, and the room we were shown to as a waiting room is luxurious. It seems that “Gotoken” also holds weddings and memorial services. One of the founders was Goto Eikichi, the first head chef of the former Shogunate army who fought in the Hakodate War. At “Sekkatei” you can enjoy Gotoken’s specialty curry and Western dishes. The inside is spacious and has a relaxed atmosphere. I wonder what the menu is like? The Western set looks very delicious. But I think I’ll just have a simple curry today. I’m also interested in the “rich duck curry” that the former Emperor and Empress have eaten. This time I ordered the top mixed curry. First comes the fukujinzuke and peanuts. In the back is garam masala. A nice aroma wafts through the air. Rice is served in the center, and two types of curry are on the left and right. On the left is British-style beef curry. On the right is Meiji-style pork curry. The spoon has an unusual shape. Let’s start with the pork curry. It’s delicious♪ It’s surprisingly spicy. The faint aroma of butter is good. The pork is sweet and delicious. It’s small but filling. Next is British-style beef curry. Ah, this is also delicious. It has a strong and rich flavor. I love this beef curry. Adding garam masala made it spicier. The garam masala is Gotoken’s original. I also tried peanuts. …I wonder if it’s okay to eat it like this? It was my first time, but it was delicious. Gotoken is said to be the Western restaurant with the longest history in Hokkaido. I didn’t eat it today, but cake is also a specialty. By the way, I had curry again on the first day. It’s a historic restaurant, and I enjoyed a leisurely curry that is typical of Hakodate. Ah, it was delicious…Thank you for the meal! The store also sells many souvenirs. There are many types of curry. There was also a collaboration curry with a Trappist monastery, a branch of the Catholic religious order. By the way, Trappist is a monastery for men. Butter and cookies are famous as souvenirs. There is also a Trappistine monastery, a monastery for women, in the Yunokawa area where I went yesterday. Anyway, after leaving Gotoken, I went to the next store. Next, I came to have dessert♪ I went to “Angelique Voyage”. There are delicious looking sweets lined up inside the store. I came here to eat crepes today. Apparently, the expiration date of crepes is only 30 minutes. I saw it on TV and wanted to go. The shop only offers takeout, so I eat it while heading to the next shop. I ordered the popular “Strawberry Millefeuille” (750 yen). I’ll eat it right away. Mmm! This is really delicious♪ The crepe dough on the outside is thin, but it’s very chewy. The millefeuille sandwiched between the crepes has a nice crispy texture. It’s fun to bite into them together. The strawberries are also juicy, and the sourness and cream go together perfectly. I’ll eat this in no time. It doesn’t take more than 30 minutes. I can see why this is so popular. I finished it in no time while walking. Thank you for the meal! By the way, the shop is so popular that there is a line. Because of this, there are people walking in front of and behind me while eating. We are about 30 meters apart from each other, but it’s somehow awkward to get too close lol. Well, next I’m going to eat ramen again today. I had time, so I was wondering which restaurant to go to… This time I went to “Mame-san”. This ramen shop was founded in 1968 and is one of the most representative ramen shops in Hakodate. They have three types of salt ramen. I ordered the “Original Mame-san Salt Ramen” (650 yen), which reproduces the taste from when they first opened. They also have soy sauce and miso ramen. I handed over my ticket and went to the counter seat. It seems that you can also purchase noodles online. The salt ramen has arrived♪ It looks different from the two bowls I had so far. There is back fat floating in it. This also looks delicious… So I started with the soup. Ahh, it’s delicious… The taste is different from other salt ramen. It’s light, but the back fat is rich♪ This is also an addictive taste. Next is the noodles. The curly yellow egg noodles are chewy♪ This goes well with the soup. It’s completely different from salt ramen. The gluten absorbs a lot of the soup and is soft. The pork slices are chewy and the fat is sweet. The soup is even more delicious when combined with the ingredients. Once again, I was able to enjoy the traditional taste. If you have room in your stomach, please try different flavors. This was also very delicious. Thank you for the meal! Anyway, I was thinking about going home soon… But before that, I walked a little because there was a place I wanted to see. Ah, I found the Sakamoto Ryoma storehouse. They are in various places. I think this is the only place where you can see Ryoma posing like this. The Sakamoto Ryoma Memorial Museum is also nearby. Anyway, I walked a little from Jujigai Station on the tram. In this video, you can see the oldest thing in Japan. There it is, it’s probably that one. This electric pole. It is said to be the oldest concrete electric pole in Japan. It was built in 1923. Before this pole was built, it was made of wood. It is still in use, but the shape is a little different. It’s not a cylinder, but a square pole. One of the reasons for making a concrete electric pole is the history of the Great Fire of Hakodate. According to records, there were 19 fires during the Meiji period alone that destroyed hundreds of houses. In 1934, 24,186 houses, more than half of the houses in Hakodate city, were burned down, and more than 2,000 people died. Therefore, fire-resistant concrete was used for electric poles. Higashi Honganji Temple, which I saw on the first day, was the first temple in Japan to be built with reinforced concrete. At the time, the bankrupt Hokkaido Takushoku Bank’s Hakodate branch was located here. There was also a reason to match the scenery with the branch, which was made of reinforced concrete. There is also another electric pole nearby, and together they are called the “couple electric poles. ” By the way, this one was once demolished and rebuilt. Well, I had seen everything I wanted to see, and I thought it was time to go home, but… I discovered a shop called “Hakodate Koi Ichigo Western Confectionery Shop” near the electric pole. It is a shop that focuses on strawberry sweets, so I decided to go in last♪ The signature dish is strawberry pudding. It seems that you can also take it out. All the sweets look delicious. I ordered and sat down. The chairs are also bright red. I’ve been waiting for this♪ This is exciting. The “Fresh Strawberry Pudding” (486 yen) is filled with strawberries. I also ordered “Strawberry Milk” (500 yen). It is neatly divided into two layers. First, I stir the strawberries and milk together… Ah, maybe they’re not mixed properly yet. My mouth is filled with strawberry jelly, and it’s very sweet lol. I’ll stir it a bit more. Ah , this is so good♪ I didn’t think strawberries and milk would go so well together. I’ve only had strawberry milk once or twice before. This is so good. It’s sweet, but refreshing, and I can gulp it down. Then I’ll have the “fresh strawberry pudding”♪ It’s full of strawberries. The first bite is not like pudding lol. This is also good. Strawberry jelly with a perfect balance of sweetness and sourness. I could eat as much as I wanted. The pudding would be delicious too… This also makes my mouth happy. If you eat it with pudding, the sweetness becomes even more mellow. The texture of the pudding and the flesh is fresh. Why are strawberries famous in Hakodate? The reason is that Hakodate is the first place in Japan where strawberries for eating were cultivated. It started when they were brought from abroad, and before that, there were only ornamental strawberries and wild strawberries. The milk used in this shop is from Hakodate, and the sweets are full of the essence of Hakodate. But it’s so delicious. Even though they’re all sweet, I never get tired of eating them together. I was especially surprised at how delicious the strawberry milk was. I had imagined it to be sweeter, but this was really easy to drink. I was so happy to find this shop by chance♪ Thank you for the meal! On the way back, I found this. Yellow fire hydrants are rare in Japan. Like concrete utility poles, these were installed as a fire prevention measure. I saw them in various places while walking around the city from the first day. The reason they’re yellow is because they were inspired by American fire hydrants. Apparently there were no disaster prevention cities in Japan at the time that could serve as a reference. Therefore, apart from Hakodate, they can be found in Fuchu, Tokyo, and on the campus of Tohoku University. Yellow fire hydrants remain where the US military camps were. The churches in Motomachi that we visited on the first day and Gotoken that we visited earlier have been burned down many times and rebuilt along with the cityscape. Evidence of the city’s history of facing great fires remains in various places in Hakodate. Okay! Let’s go home now. Oh, that’s also a rare piece of equipment. This photo was taken a long time ago, and it’s called the “Old Hakodate City Tramway Tower.” In the past, the tracks branched off, and points and signals were switched from inside. It’s 5.4m high and 1.9m in diameter. Staff were there from the first train to the last train. Before the tower was built, the tracks were not electrified, so people had to go to the front of the tracks to switch them. It was installed in September 1939, and is the oldest existing tower in Japan. However, it was in use for a surprisingly long time, and was in use until June 1995. Beyond the tower, you can see Mt. Hakodate, a popular tourist spot. Mt. Hakodate is famous for its night view. But it’s also recommended to climb it during the day. It’s fun to compare the terrain with the map. Also, this place has been on my mind for the past three days. Apparently this “Kitajima Saburo Memorial Museum” is very interesting… The robot of Kitajima Saburo singing Japanese songs is very realistic. I’m not sure if I should take the time to go there next time… I took the city tram to Hakodate Station. Foreign language announcements were being made on the train. This was the last time I could see the town of Hakodate for a while. I wonder when I can come again. After collecting my luggage, I bought a Shinkansen ticket and headed to the platform. Come to think of it, it’s been a while since I took a train in Hakodate. On my last trip to Hokkaido, I arrived by boat and left Hakodate by night bus. By the way, in Hakodate, I took the sleeper express “Hamanasu”, which no longer exists. It was comfortable because I could go directly from Hakodate to Aomori without changing trains. Now I need to go to Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto Station, where the Shinkansen runs. I took some photos and got on the train just in time. First, it took about 20 minutes to Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto Station. The straight roads look like Hokkaido. Oh, I can see it. I arrived at Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto Station. From what I can see, everyone seems to be changing to the Shinkansen. I wonder if I’ll get home before 10pm? Hokkaido is so far away after all. For now, I took a photo of the front car. This train is called “Tohoku DC Reconstruction Train”. It is a wrapping train to promote tourism in the six Tohoku prefectures affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake. This is also a logo mark that is posted on the Shinkansen that runs through Tohoku. “Treasureland” is a coined word that means “a land full of treasures”. It is a symbol that conveys the message of leaping forward beyond the earthquake disaster, and has a phoenix motif. The PR mascots of the six Tohoku restaurants are also gathered together. My personal favorite character is “Musubimaru” from Miyagi Prefecture. I hope that tourism will continue to grow. Now, when I sat down. Before leaving Hokkaido, a final treat♪ I bought some things that I wanted to eat when I came to Hakodate at Hakodate Station. All the shops are convenient because they are near Hakodate Station. First of all, here. I bought a “Yakitori Bento” from “Hasegawa Store”, a specialty loved by locals in Hakodate. By the way, the meat being grilled is not chicken but pork. In southern Hokkaido, pork is called “yakitori”. There are other areas where it is called the same thing, such as Muroran in Hokkaido and Higashimatsuyama in Saitama. Now that it has become a famous specialty among tourists, there were many goods for sale. And another one is also a specialty of Hakodate. I had a “Lucky Pierrot” hamburger♪ “Lucky Pierrot” has many things other than burgers, so I always have a hard time deciding. This time I went for the standard hamburger. So, I was able to buy it before leaving Hakodate♪ First of all, the “Yakitori Bento” (small, 490 yen). Yes, the visual is yakitori lol. It contains three skewers. I chose the sauce flavor. You can also choose salt flavor or a mix of sauce and salt. You can remove the meat from the skewers using the groove in the container. It’s delicious♪ The sweet and spicy sauce is exquisitely seasoned. This taste makes you want rice. The rice is soaked in the sauce and is very satisfying to eat. The green onions are chewy and sweet. The taste is addictive and I finished it in no time. It’s starting to rain outside. Next is the “Lucky Pierrot” hamburger♪ I ordered the most popular “Chinese Chicken Burger” (350 yen). I also bought “onion rings” (240 yen). First of all, I was surprised at how heavy the burger was. It felt like I was holding a softball. No matter how many times I look at it, it’s amazing how thick it is… It’s quite difficult to hold it with one hand. This is also super delicious♪ The chicken is well seasoned and very delicious. The bun is thick but light and fluffy. By the way, it’s called Chinese because it’s finished with a Chinese taste. I think it definitely has a sweetness like yakitori. The onion rings have a good onion texture♪ The sweetness of the onion is addictive. Finally, I was very satisfied to be able to try Hakodate’s specialty♪ Now I can go home without any worries. There is an announcement before entering the “Seikan Tunnel” that connects Hokkaido and Honshu. Aomori Prefecture is at the end of the world’s longest undersea tunnel, which is 53.85 km long. Finally, let’s have dessert under the sea. We also bought this at a shop called “Petit Merville” in front of Hakodate Station. It’s a little squashed, but this cake is delicious. The shop looks like this. “Mel Cheese” is their signature dish. This is the plain version of Mel Cheese. Ahh, so delicious… it’s fluffy and melts easily in your mouth. The richness of the cheese and the mellow sweetness that spreads in your mouth is amazing. It has a different texture to “Snaffles”, and is also delicious. Next is chocolate. The chocolate is soft and delicious. You can directly feel the rich sweetness of the chocolate. I finished the chocolate in no time. Thank you for the meal! I guess the Seikan Tunnel is almost over? This is a place called “Tapitaten” for evacuation. It was originally a station, and you can get off and take a look around. I don’t feel like I crossed the sea, but I landed on Honshu. It took me 4 hours by boat, but I came back in 1 hour. But this time I’m going to Tokyo Station, so the Shinkansen journey will continue. Well, that’s the end of my Hakodate trip. Thank you for watching until the end. Please watch again next time. Thank you for the mealfrom Hakodate.

Pudding is where it is at in Hokkaido. I have traveled extensively around Japan but my 3 recent trips to Hokkaido have convinced me that Japanese pudding is delicious and inside Japan Hokkaido is #1.
The food you eat on the Shinkansen looks delicious!
Thank you for showing us a fun journey.
There were a lot of delicious sweets. I want to go there someday.
Thank you as always. I can't wait for the next video!
I love curry and I envy the fact that there are so many different kinds of curry in Japan.
