Is this hidden gem in Japan worth the hike?
[Music] But I do want to make you
The mountain temple of Japan 🇯🇵
1015 steps up in the mountain, in Yamadera (Yamagata prefecture) about an hour west of Sendai in northern Japan, you’ll find this stunning temple.
It’s a truly spectacular place with sweeping views over the surrounding valleys, and the train ride from Sendai passes through some of the most stunning parts of Japan (Akiu Great Falls) which is one of the most famous waterfalls in Japan.
The temple was built in 860 and there are several shops at the base. It’s the perfect day trip from Sendai and I highly recommend visiting this area if you want to explore a less crowded side of Japan. 🇯🇵 The hike itself is relatively easy, but getting to the top takes at least 30 minutes. It’s very snowy and slippery during winter so prepare accordingly if you’re visiting during that time.
Admission is 300 yen and then train ride from Sendai is priced at 860 yen and there’s one train per hour.
