I Rented A GIRLFRIEND In Tokyo! šŸ‡ÆšŸ‡µ

Hello! Today we will be walking from Shinjuku
to Shinjuku-Gyoen-Park while showing off famous spots. We’re joined today
by the beautiful local guide, Kyoko. Kyoko, say ā€œHello!ā€ to the camera! Hellooo! Kyoko is a local who will teach us more about this area while teaching us more about herself. Okay, let’s go! Let’s go! What time did you wake up today? Today I woke up at… … at nine I woke up at 9 and got ready What did you do up until now? So like… I woke up at 9, then… And then for breakfast I drank coffee and ate an apple Apple? Yes, apple I eat an apple every morning An apple or a banana Ah, you like going to the gym and being healthy, right? Yeah, I love it! I saw a lot of your ā€˜in the gym’ pictures Muscle training! I saw a lot of those pictures And… my dogs! You walked your dogs? I also walked my dog! I went and walked my dog ths morning Both your dogs or only one of them? Because they are still puppies and small Today so far I only walked one of them In the mornings I walk the white puppy And then at night I walk the black puppy So I walk them both separately Why do you walk them separately? So actually, I want to walk them both together at the same time but… If I walk them both at the same time they are impossible control They still can’t go for walks like normal They still can’t walk straight My dog still can’t either My dogs’ names are The white puppy’s name is ā€œPontaā€ Ponta? Yeah, Ponta Which breed is Ponta? Pomeranian A white pomeranian Ponta… About this big still Still super small! And the black puppy? And the black puppy’s name is? The black puppy’s name is ā€œLufinaā€! What does Lufina mean? The so-callled ā€œlupineā€ flower And that’s how I came up for the name Lupina for my little sweety! She’s a black pomeranian I didn’t know her name’s origins was a flower Yeah Oh, right now it smells good! Oh, yeah! I wonder why… Oh yeah, in this buildilng there’s a lot of lunch-time restaurants There’s a lot of lunch restaurants I still didn’t eat breakfast yet… Let’s eat something together at Shinjuku-Gyoen-Park At Shinjuku-Gyoen? Do you like traditional Japanese food? You wanna eat together at Shinjuku? So after this I have to meet with a friend so… And eat lunch together I already planned to… So I’m fine with just coffee Then I guess I’ll just have to eat all by my lonesome… If it’s at Shinjuku-Gyoen park then I recommend their sandwich Oh, but they also have like traditional Japanese food right? Oh, yeah yeah they also have traditional Japanese food Yeah they really have good traditional Japanese food It costs around 2000 yen right? I don’t think it costs 2000 yen at lunch time I think it’ll cost around 1500 yen? From 1500 to 2000 yen I didn’t go for around a year so I wasn’t really sure about the price So I don’t really remember the prices I know a good traditional Japanese food shop at Shinjuku-Gyoen There’s a lot of them Which one do you prefer: Japanese or Western food? Ehmmmm I prefer Japanese food You’re a real, life-in-the-flesh, Japanese If I could only pick Western or Japanese food for the rest of my life, I’d pick Japanese But on special occasions I like eating Western food Do you feel fine after eating bread? Like, how do you feel after eating bread? After eating bread? I love eating bread! I love bread But you don’t get sleepy at all? Or your stomach becomes bloaty? Oh! that’s what you’re asking about I’m fine after eating bread. Not really any problems but… If I eat too much, like if I eat too much and there’s only bread in my stomach, like I’ll get super sleepy For example, if I eat pizza I see, that is quite the predicament I get super sleepy… My blood sugar spikes When you eat Japanese food your blood sugar spikes slowly over time Yeah, that’s true! Yeah, so that’s why you don’t get so sleepy and it’s healthy to eat Japanese food Somebody just popped their tire Yeah, it went like ā€œpopā€! Yeah, a car tire Yeah, it went like, ā€œpopā€! So every morning you eat that kind of breakfast? Just coffee and an apple? Yep, every morning just coffee and an apple But aren’t you scared of getting a depression? For real Okay but sometimes… Sometimes I’ll drink coffee, eat an apple and sometimes a banana And then I also drink a protein shake Damn… Like one of those whey proteins you have to shake? Yeah, yeah like shakey shakey So like the ā€œUltraā€ Japanese protein shake, there’s a macha flavor, that’s my recommendation So like is it whey or soy-based protein? Whey or soy-based? It’s whey based Whey whey So sometimes I’ll drink soy-protein but it doesn’t really taste that good. If you know any good-tasting soy-protein please recommend it to me But soy is bad for you Soy is bad? The protein-quality is low I mean like… The protein digestibility is bad? Yeah the protein digestibility is bad. Only half of the protein is absorbed right? Yeah, so only half of the protein is absorbed, but the absorption is gradual, so… So women usually prefer soy-based protein powder, however… But in my opinion it’s fine to drink whey protein if you’re doing weight lifting Whey protein comes from milk, right? Yeah, from milk I’m not quite the expert on protein powders and such I do have to admit Milk-protein. Animal proteins… Over there is Mitsukoshi Shopping Mall I think I’ve been there before Oh really? Everyone likes shopping there So, Kyoko, do yo like shopping? So, Kyoko, do you like shopping? Every week, how many times do you go? – Once or twice?
– Maybe once Recently I bought this bag Speaking of the devil, actually there’s something I heard about Osaka people They love buying cheap things Yes! We love a good bargain! Was that you just bought a bargain? Yes, this was a bargain! I bought it when I had a lot of points saved up You also like points? Like saving up points I love points, and also, I love sales! I always only buy things the moment they go on discount Oh, so that bag was– Wow that puppy is cute! – Cuteee!
– So small!
– So cute!
– What breed is it? Maltese, I think – Or maybe it was a poodle?
– It looked exactly like my dog! My dog looks exactly like that! – Is your dog a poodle?
– She’s a bischon frisse but kind of different For some reason my dog is abnormally small – Is that so? A bischon frisse right? The really fluffy white dogs right? But because she’s too small She doesn’t really look that fluffy – I see
– Wait, what were we talking about just now? – I’m not sure…
– Oh we were talking about that bag’s price! The bargain topic So as I stated I am a Osaka citizen A true, live in the flesh, Osaka citizen Though right now I’m living in Tokyo So all Osaka people love bargaining So for example For example… For example when we go shopping We always go to the person working at the counter And say, ā€œCan’t you make this a little cheaper?ā€ Or for example, ā€œIf I buy two now, can you make one of them a little cheaper?ā€ Do you also try to bargain while in Tokyo? In Tokyo I don’t do that kind of stuff Yeah, like if you did that in Tokyo they’d look at you like a crazy person right? Yeah I learned that the hard way. One time in Tokyo I went to BicCamera (major eletronics store in Japan) This was right after first moving to Tokyo from Osaka right? Yep, I sure did. And my friend got really shocked when I tried bargaining Like was your friend’s reaction: ā€œWhat the hell is wrong with this person?ā€ That’s so funny But more importantly, did you manage to get the discount? Like, so the person working at the register said, ā€œLemme ask my managerā€ And then… So I didn’t manage to get the discount but they said I could immediately use the saved up points I would normally have to buy again to use Stereotypical Osaka person Super stereotypical Osaka person But when I asked for the discount I was speaking in my Osaka accent So they thought, ā€œOh, this is one of those weird Osaka peopleā€ And that friend who was with you is from Tokyo right? The person working at the register? I mean the friend you were with Oh yeah that friend was from Tokyo – So your friend thought you were weird right?
– Yeah I looked super weird! Like a pushy, greedy person! People from Tokyo probably don’t understand Osaka people’s personalities Yeah they really don’t understand us. But like, for some reason, Tokyo people always expect people from Osaka to be super funny and witty So I always get asked, ā€œHey, say something funā€ To be honest, I was about to ask you the same thing just now Okay, please give me your ā€œguaranteed to get laughsā€ story (An Osaka term for your best story/joke) So you want me to give you my guaranteed to get laughs story? So now even you ask me, how rude… But we Osaka people aren’t as funny as everyone thinks we are – So you aren’t funny, Kyoko?
– I’m hilarious. Okay, then you have to give me your guaranteed laughs story! My funniest story, huh… You can also take your time and look through your notes I can also look through my notes as well huh… Okay but please give me some time to think Actually this reminds me. I was watching a news segment on tv Regarding exactly this So they were interviewing Osaka people on the street and asking exactly this question. And then as soon as they were asked, everyone always asked for time to look through their notes A guaranteed laughs story is quite hard to perfect, you know I have a lot of stories but I can’t think of one right now. Actually, you try now. What’s your guaranteed laughs story? Shoot! Okay so you want me to do one right now? Come on come one, let’s see it Okay then. Now I shall do my guaranteed laughs story right in front of a live in the flesh proud Osaka person I’ll be grading it so better make it good So I had a super, super bad period A super bad sales period at my job Like my sales were super bad At my job. For around one month it was super bad. I had bad luck And then to top it all off, I got pooped on by a big black crow Like I got hit by soo much crow poop! That sucks And I even wanted to throw a rock at this crow I got so mad I really wanted to throw a rock or something And then right after that I was talking on the phone with my dad And then I told my dad about the crow And then out of nowhere my dad said, ā€œWow, that’s such good news!ā€ Then I said, ā€œWhat do you mean?ā€ ā€œThat means you are now have good luck!ā€ he said And then I said, ā€œWhat the hell do you mean, dad?ā€ And then my dad said, ā€œEvery time I got hit by bird poop…ā€ ā€œI always got super lucky!ā€ ā€œI always win a lot of money right after!ā€ he said And then my reaction was like, ā€œWhat’s wrong with this guy?ā€ So if you get hit by bird poop you’re lucky? And then I forgot all about this and went on with my life And then one month later My sales were still super bad And then I called my dad again And then of course I wanted to complain to my dad ā€œHow come my luck is still bad even though I got hit by that damn bird poop? You lied to me right? Why did you lie to me?ā€ I wanted to say something like that. But then as soon as I called him, he interrupted me hurridly and said, ā€œVigo, I have news!ā€ ā€œYou won’t believe it! I won 6.000 USD today! ā€ – Your dad said?
– Yeah… So the luck went over to your dad instead of you?
– Yeah I guess your dad stole your luck, huh? Hey, Viggo? Viggo? BANG! Viggo? BANG! Crap, I missed it… I messed up I messed up I’m sorry I’m sorry Damn it, I completely missed it! This is embarrassing Damn it… So what do you think about my guaranteed laughs story? It was funny My Japanese is too bad for jokes Okay, now it’s time for Kyoko’s guaranteed laughs story! So you wanna hear mine… Yes, right now Well then… I’m better at one-liners though What’s a one liner?
– A one liner in Japanese is… To do a bit Like that kind of humour I mean like a one liner. Not a story but just like… For example if you say: Do a skit now! Then I have to say: Okay, here’s my skit!
We have that kind of culture And so that’s my specialty – What’s an example of that?
– For example… Lemme think… Impersonations. Doing somebody’s impersonation Okay, then please do Kasuga’s impersonation!
(Very famous Japanese comedian) Kasuga? Audrey Kasuga?
– Yeah, that guy I’m not really good at doing that guy… Can you think of any other celebrities? Oh look! We arrived at Shinjuku-Gyoen National Park! Hurray! We arrived! Okay so please do… I don’t really know the names of Japanese celebrities I’ve seen them many times but I only know their faces not names Ehm… I don’t know I’m very good at impersonating Donald Duck Okay! Then please do it now! What do you think? Who’s Donald Duck?
(I thought she said Donald Trump so I got confused) Donald Duck? Disney’s Donald Duck, you know right? I’m not sure… Eh, you know who that is right?
– Yes I know, but I mean your impersonation isn’t good Look at a video of Donald Duck when you get home. I’m amazing at his impersonation Are you sure about that? Relisten to this video when you get home Okay, please do Donald Trump’s impersonation! Mr. Donald Trump
(In Japanese if you don’t put the mr in front of his name they don’t know who you are talking about) You want me to do Donald Trump?! So Donald Trump’s impersonation would be something like… Like that raising hand pose? Do you have your Suica on you?
(Japanese transportation card you can also use at this park) Yeah, no worries! This place also has Starbucks! Yeah, there’s also Starbucks There’s Starbucks here and a bunch of other stores as well Where do you wanna go?
– Lemme think… By the way do you wanna take pictures here? Why do Japanese women like camera filters so much?
– Not sure but we really like them When I lived in Denmark I never saw any camera filters For some reason all of Japanese girls use them Yeah, all of us Japanese girls love filters Shinjuku-Gyoen-Park is closer to Shinjuku than I thought It sure is in Shinjuku huh?
– Yes! Yeah, it sure is close This place is pretty Looky looky we arrived at Shinjuku-Gyoen! This park is super big so even doing one lap around it takes a long time Do you come here often? So this place… I used to live close to here So at that time I used to come here often now that I think about it So because it costs 500 yen to get in There’s not any weird people It’s great Yeah that’s really great. For example no homeless people – Yeah like, you feel safe
– Unlike Yoyogi park Yeah Yoyogi-park is kinda bad Whenever you go there there’s always somebody sleeping on the ground Yeah you can always find somebody sleeping And trash! Always trash everywhere There’s a lot of people who just throw away trash there But this park has a cleaning staff Yeah it’s really nice Yeah it’s super pretty here So I can assume you like this place better than Yoyogi-park? I sure do, I really like this place Furthermore this place has cafes as well That’s also great but… you can’t bring dogs in here Yeah that’s the only downside That sure is a shame
– It sure is However, during the spring the Sakura blossoms is super pretty, and during autumn… Wait, this place also has Sakura blossoms? Yeah yeah! There’s a lot of Sakura trees here And during autumn there’s a lot of maple trees All of these trees are maple trees – I didn’t know that
– Yeah It’s super pretty But there’s just too many people during Sakura season But still that part about no dogs is just… Like everything about this place is almost perfect. But it’s just that one part about dogs that’s just… For example, when I lived in Akihabara me and my girlfriend would come here often But because you can’t bring dogs here my girlfriend didn’t really wanna go That’s the only bad part about this place But that’s just how it isn’t it? But then again… I understand their reasoning behind it. But still sucks Yeah like, if you were allowed to bring dogs then there’d be poop everywhere There’s be a lot of that kind of stuff, and that’s kind of bad right? Yeah, in Yoyogi-park you can bring dogs You can always see many cute dogs there! It’s full of dogs But there’s sure also various homeless people there That’s just how it is… You wanna go see the Japanese gardens? If we take a turn here we’ll get there Am I walking too fast for you? – It’s good!
– Am I too fast? No, it’s fine. I usually walk fast Oh yeah so usually I only walk with girls who have short legs And those girls always say, ā€œYou’re walking too fast!ā€ But for the first time… Yeah but I always walk fast. I’m alway told by… Your legs are long! Everyone keeps saying to me, ā€œYou walk too fast!ā€ We make for the best combination Like everyone keeps saying I walk fast and that I should walk slower Whether if it’s men or women, everyone says the same – Even men?
– Yes, even by men Yeah but so right now I kept thinking, ā€œWait, why isn’t she complaining about my walking speed?ā€ Don’t worry, no complaints from me! – Oh look! It’s super pretty here
– Oh, you’re right! Right? pretty I also like the Taiwanese place – The Taiwanese place?
– Like the pretty scenery spot Have you ever been to Taiwan? Oh no, I mean… In Shinjuku-Gyoen Park there’s a Taiwanese temple. That place is super pretty Oh yeah, over there right? What’s this smell? The smell of trees? Yes, tree smell! It sure does smell like trees here. Let’s walk around there! Do you know the anime, ā€œGarden of wordsā€? I’m not sure Do you watch anime? So when it comes to anime, there’s some I watch and some I don’t watch Okay wait a sec, so… I don’t know the Japanese title of the movie, but… – But outside of Japan this movie is super famous
– Which one? Which one? Did you watch this movie? So this one I never watched but I know about It was made by a famous movie director -They used Shinjuku-Gyoen as the backdrop
– Oh yeah, that’s right Though I’m not sure so don’t quote me on that one But it looks like this place They probably used this place Oh, over there they have fish! There’s fish in the water Oh there’s also tur- there’s also tur- right?
(I forgot the Japanese word for turtle) How do you say turtles? Yeah there’s carp fish here – Yeah but carp fish and like this…
– Boats? – And like, turtles?
– Oh yeah there’s also turtles! They’re probably around here somewhere… The fish are like, ā€œGimme eat!ā€ But that’s forbidden here right? Yeah, forbidden. If you give the fish food they’ll get mad at you – Yeah, you’ll get banned (silly pun)
– What do you mean get banned? Banned from Shinjuku-Gyoen park This place is super strict about that Do you come to this place often with you friends? So I went here to watch the cherry blossoms with my friends Yeah… sometimes I come here Like by yourself or with friends? Which one do you prefer? I probably come to Shinjuku-Gyoen alone most of the time – Like…
– Going for walks Like sitting by yourself and reading a novel kind of vibe? Yes, reading novels, and cafes! Going to cafes Instagram vibes Yeah yeah exactly like that – Seems nice
– (to stranger) excuse me – My apologies (we almost hit each other)
– My apologies – What a pretty view
– Right? Let’s head over there! Super pretty. It sure is pretty right? (I tried doing a bad impersonation of the Osaka accent) You don’t say it like that! You have to say it like this! – Actually there’s something I heard-
– You gotta say it this way Yeah yeah, ā€œeeyanā€! So people from Osaka… If you ask people from Osaka if they are from Kyoto They become happy. Is that true? I mean like… I guess we become a little happy Like, Kyoto people have a ā€˜high-status’ image So it’s like you are conveying that impression. Which makes us happy Excuse me but you have something on your shirt? Dirt? Or an insect? It was a bug! So anyways, that aspect makes us happy But what’s often said about Kyoto people is that they are very good at hiding their true feelings. What they think and what they say may be completely different – What they say and what they feel might be completely opposite
– That’s hard
– Yeah, for example… So for example if you go to a restaurant or a small store and eat food in Kyoto Or if you for example go over to a person’s home to visit… And if they immediately serve you tea as soon as you arrive, and say ā€œHere’s your warm tea!ā€ it has the hidden meaning of, ā€œI want you to leave fastā€ Like, the front side and the back side are reverse Actually I heard something regarding this. People from Kyoto If they say your wristwatch is nice Then it has the hidden meaning, ā€œI don’t want to spend time with youā€ Did you ever hear that Kyoto line before? Yeah like for example if they ask you: What time is it now? Yeah so they have that kind of culture. If they ask you what time it is it means It means, ā€œHurry up and leaveā€ Did you ever directly experience this before or just something you heard about? In Osaka there’s not really many people from Kyoto, right? Yeah, in Osaka the culture is completely different. In Osaka we just say everything directly. For example: Please make this cheaper For example, in cases when normal people would hold back and say nothing, in Osaka we always directly state our true thoughts So it’s impossible for people from Kyoto and people from Osaka to become friends? But oddly enough I have friends from Kyoto So those friends are always acting in indirect ways? Yes, exactly like that! So my friends from Kyoto are kind of like… They always act sophisticated and extremely polite But like, for example… But they have a strong polite facade vs. true intentions Oh that was the place I was talking about! I wanna buy something to drink – Let’s buy some, though it’s kind of embarrassing recording in Starbucks
– Is that so? It’s embarrassing bringing a GoPro into Starbucks – Why is that embarrassing?
– Hey, remember now I’m not from Osaka like you We Danish people are quite the shy people Oh yeah, now that I think about it you are quite shy Yeah I’m super shy and introverted You easily get flustered Exactly That’s my most embarrassing part Is it embarrassing you get embarrassed? Yeah, it sucks being shy Are all of you like that? Inside my family? Or you mean Danish people in general? Are you asking about Danish people in general or just my family? Danish people I’m really not sure. Probably just me. My parents and siblings are all extroverted You would probably fit right in with my family, Kyoko We’d easily get along?
(I used the wrong Japanese expression and she corrected me) Yeah, you probably all have the same personality You’re extroverted right, Kyoko? Oh you’re asking about whether I’m introverted or extroverted?
(I used the wrong Japanese expression again) I’d probably say I’m extroverted Do you hang out with your friends every day? I wouldn’t say I hang out with them every day. But when I have some free time I like meeting with people and hanging out But who knows… Oh, it’s over there! Do people from Osaka strike up conversations with strangers? Yes! People from Osaka love talking to strangers We are completely fine with striking up conversations with complete strangers Did you ever go to America? I never visited America Americans have that kind of culture For example, on the bus they always talk to the person in the seat next to them – Americans are friendly right?
– In Osaka do you also strike up conversations with people in busses and places like that I wouldn’t say we are that friendly, but sometimes a grandmother will just randomly give you candy I heard a lot about the legendary ā€œOsaka Grandmotherā€ I also heard that when you are in the grocery store in Osaka you might get interrupted by a grandmother, and she’ll tell you: ā€œWait, don’t buy now! If you wait 5 minutes this goes on saleā€ Yes, exactly! They will always tell you to watch out for discounts We’ve arrived! – You want a picture?
– Yes! Then I shall have the honour of taking your picture, Kyoko Let’s capture something we can use for the thumbnail or something Okay so you stand here and do a sexy pose Okay then here, I put it on photo mode You can’t see anything You can’t see your face in the picture – Oh because of the light?
– Yes, your face looks completely black
– What about this angle? Oh that’s why the couple behind us didn’t take the front position So now you can see your face but the background is bad I’m not sure if it’ll turn out good… Maybe it’s better if we use a filter Maybe it’ll turn out better with a filter Do you also have an Instagram account? – Yeah yeah
– Like a lot of poses etc Like posting pics of you at Starbucks and stuff Not really I just post normal pictures of myself Oh, looking good! But you can’t really see your face in the picture That sucks Probably when they made this temple they didn’t bother to take into consideration the modern camera and Instagram needs of us Boomers Yeah, they didn’t really have to worry about stuff back then. Oh, looks good! It looks good! super good Looking good! (bad Osaka imitation) Look, water skaters! There’s water skaters and carp in the water There sure is
(she accidentally said it in a thick Osaka accent and I teased her about it) There sure is. There is
(Lost in translation. She said it once in Osaka accent then once in standard Japanese) oru
(Osaka for there is) Lookey lookey, water strider When you first came to Tokyo What did you do about your Osaka accent? Did you speak with an Osaka accent or standard Japanese accent? Just used Osaka accent, like I always do Even now? three years after? Nowadays I kind of speak like half and half, but even right now I’m speaking in Osaka accent Even right now?
(My Japanese is too bad so I didn’t notice) Yeah I’m always told I speak in Osaka accent. My intonation is different Hey look, it’s raining! For real? Yeah look, it’s raining! (She made a dad joke. In Japanese, the word for water striders is ā€œdancing rainā€. The water strider is named after how it looks like it’s raining when they move around in the water/) Wait, but that’s… You’re so silly We have to be careful! It’s pouring rain! You are the funniest person in the world, Kyoko – A bug?
– Yeah, you keep getting them on you Yeah there’s a lot of bugs here Right now we look likes monkeys Yeah you gotta be careful we don’t get mistaken for the zoo – This place sure is pretty
– It sure is Well then, let’s head out? Let’s go – Walk this side
– Okay – Let’s gooo
– Let’s goo Okay so I had something I was worried about before filming.
What would happen if somebody came up to me and complained about the camera? So I told my elder brother about this. Then he said, ā€œListen up, idiot. You’re a huge dude. Nobody is gonna say anything to youā€ And then I was like, oh yeah, he has a point What kind of person is your brother? He’s the complete opposite of me He’s super extroverted The type of guy with a lot of friends Also he’s taller than me If he’s bigger than you, then it must mean he’s huge! Yeah, our dad is 2 meters tall – Wait, for real?
– Yeah, I’m a midget compared to them In Denmark everyone is tall right? Actually, I’m not ethnically Danish. I was born and raised in Denmark. But I’m ethnically Albanian – What’s Albania?
– This small country in Europe I had no idea Oh look! There’s a lot of kids over there What’s the average height in Osaka? I wonder about that? But Japanese people are all short right? Like if you compare worldwide, we Japanese are quite short Okay but what if you compare only Osaka people to Tokyo people? Oh, which one is taller huh? But if I had to give an answer, I would say the same height I think Oh look! The kids are having a field day! – Is this a school gathering?
– Yeah yeah, kindergarden Either kindergarden or nursey school I think It looks like they are having fun! They all look so adorable don’t they? Oh, yeah right! Something else I heard about people from Osaka That Osaka mothers and sons are abnormally good friends and love each other – Yeah, you’re right!
– That’s the word on the streets That fact is true Usually fathers and daughters in Osaka aren’t really that good friends – For real?
– Yeah, though it depends on what age the daughter is at I also heard that within the family, the father is always the butt of the joke – That’s true
– Or so I heard Wait, so over there… – So I wanna get something to drink over there
– Oh sorry! I completely forgot about that I forgot you’re thirsty – No worries
– I should have brought some water with me for you You’ve gotta prepare better next time man It’s super hot you know? You should take better care of me. Though I’ll let you off the hook this time Which kids’ show is most famous in Osaka? Chibi-Maruko-Chan or Shinnosuke?
(Names of the two most popular kids’ show in Japan) – Maybe Shinnosuke?
– It’s gotta be Shinnosuke right! That show fits more in with Osaka culture So what’s interesting about that show is that it’s based in the Tokyo area of Kasukabe But even though it’s based in Tokyo that show fits especially well with Osaka people So what’s the most famous kids’ show in Osaka? I’m not really sure… so in my case I really watched Pokemon a lot ā€œGotta catch them all!ā€ POKEMON! I think Pokemon was also popular in Tokyo Like that Ash guy? I’m not sure what you call him in Japanese By the way, do you know about Doraemon? – Yeah of course I know
– Then why didn’t you ask about that show?
– I don’t really like that show that’s why. Is that show popular in Osaka? So I’m not really sure about what’s most famous right now in Osaka. But in my case I always loved watching Shinnosuke. However, my dad actually forbid me from watching that show – Why? Because of the buri buri?
(In that kids’ show, the main character always takes off his pants and shakes his butt while yelling buri buri) Yes, exactly! Because of the buri-buri part. ā€œIt’s too vulgar,ā€ my dad would say He said it was bad for our upbringing so he forbid us from watching it But he didn’t know but I would actually still watch that show secretly at grandmomma’s house BURI-BURI!
(The main character of that show says it this way) The Shinnosuke show is super funny Also the Shinnosuke movies are also super funny Though I think the movies are too scary – Like if you actually think about it there’s so many scary parts
– Yeah now that you say it… – Did you watch the doppelganger movie?
– Yeah, I watched that one! It’s too scary that movie It’s not that scary! Come on! it’s super scary, right? I mean I guess some of the Shinnosuke movies are scary- Wait actually all of them are kind of scary now that I think about it Why do they have to make them so scary? For example, did you watch the one where they travel to Mexico? The Mexico one? Ohh yeah! I didn’t watch that one yet. Is that one scary too? It’s a super scary movie. All of them are So I think Starbucks is over there? You wanna head over to Starbucks? I just wanna get something to drink – But we’ll probably have to wait in line for like 10 minutes
– For real? I’m not sure but there’s usually always a long line. At least every time I went Yeah, it looks crowded inside. Maybe there’s a vending machine or something nearby? You think there’s a vending machine around? I think there’s probably a vending machine nearby I think so too… oh we have to go up! I hope there’s one But yeah, now that I think about it the Shinnosuke movies are kind of scary – You like Pikachu?
– Huh?
– You like Pikachu? I love Pikachu Me too ā€œPikachu!ā€ how’s my imitation? Pikachuuuuu I used to always watch Pokemon in the mornings as a kid I really loved Pokemon as a kid When would you watch it? In the mornings?
(I used bad grammar so she couldn’t understand me) – Mornings?
– What time of the day would you watch Pokemon? I was always watching Pokemon. From kindergarden even until elementary school Would you watch during the mornings or nighttime?
(I used proper grammar here) I would always watch during night. From 5 to 7, around that time There sure is a line, you were right it’s kind of long – You wanna wait in line?
– I’m not sure Well, let’s wait in line, I guess But I wanna go to the toilet real quick Me too Let’s eat! It’s really pretty over there So what are you drinking right? So this is… Yuzu lemon tea? – Gotta get them vitamins
– Yes a lot of vitamins inside this bad boy There’s also yuzu citrus inside. It’s a kind of soda combination What’s yuzu? So yuzu is a Japanese… So it’s a kind of special citrus that’s also related to normal oranges They are related fruits – Did you ever eat yuzu?
– I don’t think so There’s even a lot of yuzu skin inside this It sure smells good though So this is a limited-edition Japanese Starbucks drink You ever drink this before? Yes! Caramel right? Do you like it? It’s too sweet for me That caramel drink’s too sweet for me You remember what I told you yesterday? How I ate too much Yeah about that, what did you eat too much of? Chips, normal candies, and ice cream I probably ate around… 600 grams, give and take – That’s crazy
– Yeah I’m stupid, I ate too much Covered in greese I woke up at 5 in the middle of the night, it was the worse Because your stomach hurt? – No, I threw up
– You threw up! That’s bad, you know – Inside the shower
– That’s super bad! Normally people wake up at 5 am to throw up because of alcohol or something. But in my case it’s because of candy You probably had too much fat inside you – Yeah a lot of fat and-
– A lot of sugar too But what got me was probably the combination! Chips-Candy-Ice cream Speaking of chips, did you ever eat Koike-Chips
(Japanese brand) I’m not sure. I can’t tell by the name alone. Probably if I saw a picture of it I’d know if I ate it You shouldn’t overeat like that Did you ever eat this before? This Starbucks chicken tortilla I didn’t. What does it taste like? Here, look! It looks delicious Tortilla Chicken and cheese Did they warm it up for you?
– Yeah! It looks delicious When you’re hungry in Osaka, what expression do you use? My stomach is empty or I am hungry?
(Lost in translation. In Japanese there’s two ways to say you are hungry) My stomach is empty. We usually use that one Or sometimes, I’m hungry
– Tastes good!
– That’s great! In Japanese food TV-shows they always do overreactions. Like they are screaming, ā€œDeliciousā€ and it’s obviously fake ā€œThe inside of my mouth feels like it’s the inside of a treasure cave!ā€ they sometimes say ā€œIt’s so crispy!ā€ Jiwa-jiwa!
(food term for when flavor and aroma spreads slowly) So crispy and jiwajiwa! Sooo juicy! It always feels like they are just repeating practised lines ć‚«ćƒŖć‚«ćƒŖ怂 ć˜ć‚ć˜ć‚ćµć‚ćµć‚ć€‚ fluffy-fluffy By the way, Kyoko… Dripping dripping Do you watch TV often?
– Yeah!
– Like directly on the TV or just clips on social media? I watch TV directly, sometimes I usually watch the news channel Nihon. Usually during the day time Do you also watch NHK?
(the biggest Japanese news channel) I usually watch the news section, ā€œHirudesā€. And what else? Lately…. also sometimes I watch the news ā€œToday, Mr. Donald Trump…ā€ – What do you mean?
– He’s always on the news. Everytime I turn it on I feel like I hear his name Mr. Trump is always on the news Do you do morning radio calisthenis?
(A famous show that plays every morning where you train alongside the TV) Calisthenics? Oh, you mean the NHK show!
(I said the name incorrectly) My girlfriend does it every morning Oh that’s cool! And a 1 and a 2 and a 3! I used to do it every morning too So this is how I learned about morning calisthenics. So one time my girlfriend’s mom came over to stay. Then when I woke up in the morning I went out to the living room and they were doing all those weird movements. And I was like, ā€œWhat the hell are they doing?ā€ Like this movement right? And then after that they explained to me what morning radio calisthenics is and stuff I really had no idea what they were doing. Like just these weird movements Like these movements right? Yeah… so in Japan we call that Radio Fitness Did you use to do it as a kid? Yes! At school they force us to do it During morning assembly they make us do it, Radio Fitness Like inside the classroom? Yeah, inside class. Or during gym class So they’d just put on the radio and then everyone would start doing it? We don’t have anything like that in Denmark Huhh… radio fitness.. So in Denmark But like in Denmark you have gym class right? We do have gym class. Though we don’t really take it that seriously We don’t really take it seriously like here in Japan. Everyone usually just skips it In Japan if we ever skip class we get yelled at But Denmark is kind of a lawless place What? Like free? So in Denmark, at least around the place I lived, everyone would, at the age of like 16… Or from the age of 15 Everyone would go partying and drink alcohol For real! That’s too young? In Japan nobody starts drinking until the age of 20 Have you ever heard about Viking culture? – Viking?
– Viking culture Yeah yeah I get you, you mean buffet right?
(For some reason, in Japanese the word for a food buffet is viking) – No I don’t mean buffet!
– But you said viking? I’m talking about warriors and stuff – Warriors?
– Wait a min Isn’t a viking like a buffet? I was sure you were talking about buffets Lemme look up viking What’s a viking Okay look! You’ve never seen this before? Ohh… is that some kind of movie?
(I showed her a picture of a viking warrior) Nooo! This is Denmark’s culture I have no idea. What is this? Viking? I’ll learn more about it So within Europe, Danish culture is kind of special compared to the other countries I’m not really sure how to explain it. But because of this viking history, young people are allowed to drink Okay, I see… Okay I’m looking up Danish vikings now A Germanic peoples tribe? So normally in Europe Everyone is Christian and goes to church So it’s kind of like Kyoto in a sense Like normally in Europe everyone is civil But in Denmark’s case it’s different. Danish history is like going to other countries and doing bad stuff. Like hopping on a boat and plundering England Like head to other countries and do bad stuff kind of culture – I’m really not sure how to explain
– I read something about tribal people? Yeah, a weird culture A weird culture huh? I’ll have to look it up when I get home Today there sure is a lot of kids around! I really like the cute hats they wear Me too! Did you know they use the color of the hats to divide the classes? Which color were you? So I was… but I’ve been many colors. It rotates often I’ve been in the blue hat class. I’ve been in the red hat class as well What was your favorite color? Blue, I guess… – You mean blue?
– Blue hat
(In Japanese blue can also mean green so I wasn’t sure) Do you mean the blue as in blue pants or green? Like these pants I got confused because I get confused because when it comes to traffic lights, in Japanese you call the green light blue Traffic lights?
(I used bad grammar again so she couldn’t understand what I was trying to say) I wonder why… But red is bad
(She made another dad joke. In Japanese red and bad sound similar) Red symbolizes danger The symbolic meaning. That’s probably why they picked red Yeah, that’s probably why they picked red Red is bad- But I’m talking about how in Japan you always call the green light blue What do you mean blue?
– You know, blue! Oh yeah I never thought about it. But yeah we call green blue. Huh… Red means, ā€œStop!ā€ Red is bad
(She keeps repeating the dad joke waiting for my reaction) -You’re so funny
– Red is bad – Akan! (Osaka accent for bad)
– Akan It means bad
– You are so funny you know You really think so? Do it white/right!
(Another Osaka pun) Red is bad! Do it white! You’re bombarding me with dad jokes Dad jokes
(she corrected my bad Japanese) But yeah, I like blue But yeah green is green I guess… But yeah, I never realized it until you pointed it out. We sometimes call green blue Even though the traffic light is green We call it blue light That’s why I was confused just now when you said your favorite color is blue. ā€œDoes she mean blue or green?ā€ is what I was thinking Ahhh now I get it. You didn’t understand which color I meant huh So we normally just say trees and plants are green Does it taste good? Kyoko, you look cute today as well
(Wordplay on that fact that her name sounds similar to the word for day) Thank you You get told that often, right? Ehhh not that much – Why are you lying?
– Sometimes I get told sometimes not But yeah, some people call me cute and that makes me very happy Why are you lying? You probably get called pretty every day You really think so? Yeah of course But I don’t get called pretty every day! Only sometimes This tastes amazing. You like this? You like this sandwich? Yeah, I like bread So every time you go to Starbucks you always order the limited-edition item. And… Only that?
– Always the limited-edition special, and… Also I really like coffee so – What kind of coffee?
– Just regular black coffee At Starbucks and Tully’s. You know Tully’s? You think I’m stupid? Of course Wait so you always have breakfast at home or at Starbucks? I don’t really eat at home. At home it’s always… What about the apple thing you mentioned earlier? So for the apple I’ll just, you know, buy it at a store. Cut it up. You know… You buy at a store or restaurant?
(My Japanese is bad. I misheard her and thought she eats her apples at a restaurant) Yeah. The apple I eat at home, right? Yeah. Like you said every morning you always drink coffee and eat apple. So I was wondering Yeah, but I buy the apple at a grocery store not the restaurant – So the apple is always prepared from home
– Yeah yeah
– But the coffee is always from Starbucks or Tully’s? Ahhh so when I drink coffee in the morning I always use like drip coffee. You know, like you do like this with the filter and this then My girlfriend does the same thing every morning We call it instant coffee I just thought about something kind of dirty I kind of thought of a dirty thing
– Dirty how? So my girlfriend would always say ā€œCoffee poop!ā€ Like every time after she drank her morning coffee she would always be like, ā€˜Oh it came it came! Iā€˜ll be right back!’ But yeah right after drinking coffee you always get some good bowel movements So every morning she would always do that drip thing you were talking about. Then slowly sip her coffee. Then suddenly she would jump up like, ā€œIt has arrived!ā€ That’s funny I think it’s good for your body to drink coffee – Coffee is the best in the world
– The best! Sorry actually I’m kind of a poser. I don’t drink coffee. If I drink coffee I can’t sleep Ohh because of the caffeine? For example even if I only drank coffee in the morning, I still can’t fall asleep at night So it always stays in your system, huh – Like if I drink coffee even at night I can still sleep
– That’s some talent right there
– Yeah I can still sleep just fine But also just in general I also sleep pretty bad So you always have trouble sleeping… so also you don’t drink Monster or red bull as well? If I just drink an ounce I won’t fall asleep That kind of sucks For me even if I drank Monster at night I’d still fall asleep. Monster or a Red Bull energy drink That’s really some talent you have there! How many hours do you sleep every day? 8 or 9? Usually only around 6 or 7 hours Wait isn’t that too little? Really? Yeah, Japanese people don’t sleep much Like most of us don’t get all the sleep we need I’ve heard But yeah it’s pretty bad, everyone says. But we still do it But why do you sleep so little? I never really thought about it You gotta get 8 hours But yeah I really should sleep 8 hours But yeah most of Japanese people are always busy So that’s probably why most Japanese people sleep too little But as a pretty woman such as yourself, sleep is important Super important! Skin health! Yeah my skin gets more pretty. I have to sleep 8 hours I mean right now you are beautiful, but just think of how more beautiful you’d become! Yes! From now on even more pretty! Anti-ageing! Did you hear the news about the new Japanese anti-ageing drugs? Lately some Japanese scientists made this weird chemical I didn’t hear, what’s that about? Like this kind of weird chemical, not sure But yeah this kind of weird anti-ageing medicine Is it something you drink or inject? I’m not sure but I think it’s some kind of injection – Oh some kind of injection!
– Not sure
– But yeah in Japan we make many kinds of anti-ageing drugs Like we keep making new anti-ageing drugs so I just can’t keep up with all the news If there existed a real anti-ageing drug, would you use it? – To be honest, yes
– Me too I’d probably wanna live forever, if such a thing was true I’d wanna use it on my pets as well I didn’t even think about that If there was an anti-ageing drug for pets that’d be great too I’m sure that that’ll be developed too. Because everyone wants to use it on their pets too Yeah because if you’re gonna live for longer you want your pets to be with you too But yeah after all, I really love my pets How old are your pets? Ehm… wait a min food in my mouth My pets are right now 8 months old and 6 months old Still young! puppies Super young They’re still my babies So the first cat I bought So the story behind that cat is that my girlfriend went to a Pet’s First store in Shinjuku (the biggest pet store chain in Japan). Then she fell in love with this stupid cat and then bought it on impulse. That cat was around 1.000.000 yen Pet’s First is a super expensive store! That cat was too expensive! Yeah, super expensive. You got ripped off And then I said like, ā€œWhy did you buy that stupid cat,ā€ at first. At first though. I mean he’s a super cute cat, but… And then after that So actually when she bought the first cat My girlfriend wanted a dog, not a cat When she first went to Pet’s First But then she saw that cat and bought it. Even though she came for a dog It was probably love at first sight, right? And then after she was like, ā€œBut I still want a dog! I want a dog!ā€ And then I was like, yeah sure let’s buy one But then for the next pet we bought it directly from the breeder. At this place far out in the middle of nowhere. That dog was around 600.000 yen But that’s still super expensive you know But it’s cheaper than 1 million yen at least But yeah compared to 1 million yen I guess it was a bargain! But then after that I had a huge life crises! That dog only loved my girlfriend. Nobody else. Single eyed love And still to this day The dog always ignores me For real? But what if you gave the dog food? Like some kind of snack or something Yeah I do that too but… Like if I do that she will come and eat the snack, and then she’ll just leave right after and go back to ignoring me And then go back to my girlfriend. But yeah so after that But then I was kind of like: Hey, let’s buy one more pets. See if I win the lottery on this one And the first cat, well… I like that cat. But he’s kind of a weird one that cat That’s crazy And then I went to my girlfriend and said, ā€œWhat you think about getting one more pet?ā€ And then my girlfriend was like: Yeah, why not? And then we went to a cat cafe. And at that cat cafe There was this small and cute American short hair? Is that how you say it in Japanese We call them, ā€œAmeshoā€ So yeah there was an amesho. And I was like: Yeah, I want this kind of cat! And then we also bought an amesho. That cat was also around 600.000 yen Expensive! But yeah so we bought that one. And that brings us up to 3 pets So back to the original question. The oldest one is that first cat. That cat is… I don’t know how old – 2 years old I think
– Oh still young! I’m not sure. I think two years. That dog is 1 year old I think. I have no idea
(I made another bad pun that went over her head. The word for: I have no idea, and the word for 1 year old sound the same) Oh so both of them are still young! So that…
(I forgot how to say American shorthair in Japanese) Ameri-shorthair is the youngest That ameri… Is probably the same age as your pets Okay so that cat is still only half a year old! Yeah, though I’m not sure Okay, so today! We were joined by the beautiful Kyoko Kyoko, thank you for showing us around today! Thank you! Well then, let’s meet again another time! For sure!
