On Kyoto Gokomachi opened in a renovated 100-year-old machiya (traditional Kyoto townhouse) in Gokomachi, Kyoto. The owner, Suzuka Yamaoka, learned wagashi from a master she knew, and in November 2023, she opened the store of her dreams. The store is lined with tea utensils and vessels that are the specialties of Ms. Yamaoka, who enjoys collecting vessels. The shop is characterized by the depth of the machiya, which is said to be an “eel’s bed,” and the light and greenery shining through the tsuboniwa garden are soothing.
