For 200 years, all foreigners in Japan were housed on a small island.

The Edo shogunate was wary of the introduction of Christianity and the influence of foreign powers, and promoted “seclusion”.

Dejima was the only “exception” among these islands, where contact and trade with foreigners was permitted with restrictions under the strict supervision of the shogunate.

Dejima, a fan-shaped man-made island, is now a tourist attraction, and is highly recommended as a very interesting place to visit.
