Sha’Carri Richardson will begin her 2025 season on Sunday (18 May) when the reigning women’s 100m spring world champion debuts in Tokyo at the Golden Grand Prix.

Richardson will hit the oval for the first time since September, when she finished last in the Diamond League in Brussels in 11.23, pedestrian by her standards.

Sunday will be the first time the 25-year-old opens a track athletics season outside of the United States.

In 2024, Richardson shot to a 10.83 at the Prefontaine Classic before going on to snare silver at the Olympic Games Paris 2024 in a similar time of 10.87 and helping Team USA to gold in the 4x100m.

The Golden Grand Prix gives Richardson an opportunity to find her bearings at Tokyo’s National Stadium, where she is guaranteed to return in September for the World Athletics Championships as defending champion.

Richardson has professed to finding a new lease on life, on and off the track. Sunday could offer a glimpse of what her born-again status may look like.
