Japan is exploring the possibility of offering subsidies for the construction of Tesla electric vehicle charging stations as part of ongoing tariff discussions with the United States. According to a report by TBS, which can be viewed here, this move comes in response to concerns raised by the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) regarding Japan’s current subsidy policy.
Currently, Japan provides subsidies exclusively for the installation of charging stations using the “CHAdeMO” standard, which was developed in Japan. However, the USTR has requested that improvements be made to include Tesla’s “Supercharger” network in these subsidies. This move is seen as a step towards addressing trade imbalances and strengthening economic ties between the two nations.
Japan’s top trade negotiator, Ryosei Akazawa, is expected to travel to Washington next week for a third round of trade talks. These discussions are likely to cover a range of issues, including potential reductions in U.S. tariffs on Japanese goods. According to the Nikkei business daily, Japanese negotiators have shown a willingness to discuss lowering tariffs, which currently stand at 25% on automobiles and auto parts and 24% on other goods, rather than advocating for their complete elimination.
