The Fascinating People of the Rainbow Nation ๐Ÿ‡ฟ๐Ÿ‡ฆ vA 181

(Somewhere in South Africa) – Hopla! Let’s go, guys. It doesn’t want to stop raining. It’s funny: the weather forecast
is really not reliable around here. Let’s go. So just 27 km left, guys. Hello! Beautiful dry hills. Ah, it’s hot under this jacket. It’s so beautiful when it rains. 20! – Hello! – Hello, hello! – Hello! – How
are you? – Ah, good! – Good, good. So we are going just there.
Napier is here, but… Oh, shit. I think it’s raining there.
It’s just 2 km away, and it’s raining. I’m gonna have to put
my rain jacket on for the arrival. Hello! Napier Drukkery. – Hello!
– Hello! – You’re that man? – Yes. – We love you!
– Hello. – We love you, man! – And my guesthouse should be
somewhere around here. Oh, beautiful church. – Hi! – Hello! – Hello! – Hello, hello! So where is my guesthouse? Hello! Ah, someone wants
to talk to me. Ah? There? – You are from where? – From France. – [In French] Thank you very much,
please. – Yes. – I don’t understand. – It’s okay. – Welcome! Your first time
here? – Yeah, it’s my first time here. Yeah. But I’m looking
for my guesthouse, The Restio. – Oh, you’re there. – Yeah,
I booked there. Yeah, yeah. – You’re welcome to have
a quick look at what I sell, what I… – Ah, okay. What you sell here.
– What are you doing in France? – I travel all the time. So I’m not
in France most of the time. – Butโ€ฆ – And if you are in France,
what are you doing? – Originally, I’m an engineer. – Engineer? – Marine engineer.
Yeah. – I’ll be with you. Wait. – All sorts come in โ€” experience
the unexpected. Okay. So let’s… Is it safe here? – That’s fine.
Yeah. People around here. – So I don’t need to lock it. – I’m talking too much.
Leon Visser. – Yves. – Yves? From France. I don’t know France.
– It’s okay. – “Thank you” is… – “Merci”. – Merci. – “Danki”.
I just know “danki”. – But… And “please”? S’il vous plaรฎt.
– S’il vous plaรฎt. Oui. – Have you been…?
Your name again? – Yves. – Yves, have you been
in the military? – No. No, no. – Downstairs is not a museum โ€”
my private collection. Myself in South Africa โ€”
27 years in the military. – Ah, okay. – Industrial psychology. If you’ve got nothing
against history, you’re welcome to come
and have a look. – Okay. Is it safe here? – So, can it come
in here? Is it wide enough? – Well, maybe I’ll just lock it.
– Well, some… – Wait. Yeah, because… At least, people
won’t take it by just sitting on it and… – Yeah. – …and riding it. Okay.
– Napoleon. Was he French? – Yes, he was French. Yeah. – I’ve got him here.
– You’ve got him here? – Yeah. – Okay, wow. – This is not my shop.
It’s her shop. My wife. – It’s her shop. Okay. – This is a friend โ€” Yves.
– Yes, nice to meet you. Hello. – Hello. – So there’s Napoleon on the other side.
– Oh, yes. That’s the French… Oh, yeah, the king is Napoleon.
The emperor. Oh, Waterloo. That’s Napoleon. – Guess
from which country I get the pieces? – From France? No. – What’s “no”
in France? – No. Hm? – In French, “no”? – No? “Non”. – Non. – Non. – Russia โ€”
ะฝะตั‚. – Russia? Okay. – ะะตั‚. – ะะตั‚. – Germany โ€” nein. – Nein. Yeah. England? – Nope. South Africa.
Stop the clock. – Okay. So it’s from South Africa.
– Battle of… Battle of Waterloo. These are Crusaders,
Robin Hood, Texans, Mexicans. – Beautiful. – Three musketeers. – It’s beautiful. – And this is
the American North and South. – Okay. – My wife is painting the figures. That’s what they look like,
and she’s painting the boards for me. I make them downstairs.
– Beautiful. – This is her shop. – Are you married, Yves, or not? – No, I’m not married. Richard
the Lionheart. Okay. Oh, beautiful. – This is my wife’s shop over there. – Okay, very nice. – This is not for you
to clean the bicycle. It’s for the ladies. – Okay. – And this is not for you…
– Not for me to carry my things. – No. – It’s for the ladies as well. – That’s
my philosophy. How’s your English? All right? – Okay. Ah, okay. – I’m… – This is not a museum. I’m
not a merchant who buys and sells… I am apolitical. Not propagate
or support any political… Okay, it’s good. – If you go downstairs,
you write your name. – Okay. – Yves, downstairs is not a museum.
I don’t charge an entry fee. Oh, yeah. – Okay. – I was in the national army.
Myself โ€” 27 years military. Let’s go down. – Okay. – You are not allowed
to argue with me down there. – I’m not allowed to argue
with you. Okay. Is the bike safe? – I will take you out to your bicycle, you will get undressed,
and the ladies will take photographs. – Okay. – And you will put one uniform
on. – Okay. Oh, I will put on one uniform. – One uniform. – But I’m all dirty.
– No, not that uniform. – I’m all sweaty. – Uh-ah. No, no, no. Not the pilot one
of mine. Uh-ah. No, no, no. – Wow! – No, no. – Incredible. – This one. That’s the uniform you will put on.
– Beautiful. – This one, the kilt. – Oh, the kilt. Okay.
– Get undressed. – Naked. Naked under the kilt. – As I said,
Yves, this is not a museum. My private collection. Myself โ€” military.
In 1971 โ€” military training, artillery. – Okay. – After that, I was lucky to get the unit in this town
where the university… My girlfriend was first year,
and I was in military training. My father said,
“You must go to the university.” I applied to the university. Yes,
baccalaureus commercii (BCom). But fencing was my sport and I failed.
– Okay. – One year, two years. That girlfriend of mine got
a degree before me, and she was out. – Do you know what happened?
– Okay. No. – She’s my wife upstairs. – That’s good. – I completed
my studies, but I’m selling these. They are the boards
she must complete. – Okay. Wow! – That was my uniform. – Beautiful. – Is that the video
or what? – Yes, it’s a video. Yeah. – That was mine. – Okay. – 27 years.
I was a major. – Major? Okay. – Industrial psychology.
I was a recruitment officer. But I’m collecting medals, medals:
First World War, Second World War. – Incredible. Yeah. – Do I have a French medal?
Yes. Two. – Oh, yeah. The Cross of Lorraine.
And this one, I don’t know. Very beautiful. Incredible.
This is a… It looks like… – I’m collecting medals. – It looks like…
– My philosophy is today, if we forget the mistakes
in the past, today… – Then we… Yes, yes. – …we will repeat those mistakes
in the future again. – That’s very true. Yeah. Yeah.
– In Russia, what’s going on? – Yes. – Palestine, Israel. Fight. – Wow! – This is where I cast
my pieces, clean them… – Beautiful. – …put them in the buckets. My wife
is painting them in Turkish color. She’s painting the boards;
I’m selling chess pieces. – This is beautiful. Wow! Oh,
you have the… Okay, wow. Incredible. – Silicaโ€ฆ
The silicone rubber โ€” from Ireland. Lead and tin. There’s my tin
and there’s my lead. That’s pewter. – That’s beautiful. Incredible. – I’m casting this industrial
psychology. We’re now open. No, I’ve got nothing against the military. I was six years
at the railway company also but left that when I was
young, fit, and beautiful. Now I’ve got energy left.
– Okay. That’s beautiful. Yeah. No, that’s great. Yeah. – So I’m… – Great work. – I’m selling chess pieces,
and that is my collection. – Okay. – That’s my collection. I love medals
and badges. There are my books. I read about the history: what/
when/where it happened. Badges coming through. I have to sort
it out. It’s not really there, but… – It’s awesome. It’s
a great work you’re doing. Oh, all these. Oh, beautiful. So how do you find those?
You… – People donate to me. – People donate to you. Yeah.
– Send it to me from overseas. – Okay. – All over. My daughter-
in-law is from Belgium. – Yes. – She came permanently over. She brought her grandfather’s medals:
Second World War. – Okay. Wow! – From Queen Elizabeth,
I’ve got a signature. – Oh, wow. This is… – Elizabeth… – Oh my!
– It’s 1956. – Oh, wow! That’s the signature. Okay. – Queen Mary. – Yeah. Wow, beautiful. Incredible.
Wow. – My friend’s father was a pilot. – Incredible.
– Here is my friend’s father. Lieutenant-Colonel EA Pope. – My friend’s grandfather. – Nice.
– King George. There he is. – Beautiful. – I got his medals,
his medals, his father-in-law. Yves, this is my playroom.
I love it. – This is beautiful. This is incredible. – Germany,
Weltkrieg eins and zwei. This is Weltkrieg eins, marines.
– Okay. – I got that. People love that. There are also insignia of them.
– That’s German. Okay. – German. The history of Germany.
Please, don’t argue with me. – I cannot argue with you here. …crossed Africa. So I want
to finish by going to Cape Agulhas. – Anyway, we’ve got flats over there
as well. So there’s a guesthouse. – Ah, okay. – For safe self-catering. – Okay. – If you…
– But I already booked. The place is already booked, so…
Yeah. – Sorry for that. If… Well, that’d be nice, but…
– Third time, you’ll get my card contact. I’ll do it for you… – Okay.
– …saving the… Okay. – Welcome, welcome.
– Thank you very much. – Now, you can quickly sign the book.
– Oh, I can quickly sign the book. Yes. Okay. Thank you. – Let me
get you my card quickly. – Okay. – Arts and crafts. Coffee, tea,
and scones. – Thank you very much. Ah? – Coffee, tea, and scones
as well. – Coffee, tea? – Coffee and tea. – Yeah. – She’s baking the scones.
– Ah, okay. Oh, the scones. Oh, okay. Okay. – Tomorrow morning. – Tomorrow morning, I can come have
a coffee before I leave. – Yes. – Okay. – She’s the owner of the shop,
you see? – Okay, it’s… – …asking for coffee, tea, and scones.
Non. You say in French, it’s “non”. – Non. – Not now. – No, tomorrow
is good. Tomorrow is better. Now I need to… – Yes, yes, yes.
– I need to sort myself out. Yes. – That’s my address. – Perfect. – If you get a medal, don’t throw it
away. Think about this old man. – Okay. – If you want to take one
of these pieces over to France. – Yeah, but on my bicycle,
it’s complicated. Yeah. It’s beautiful, but… – Pieces
are in a small, little box. – Ah, one of the… Yeah, yeah.
– Small, little box. It’s… That is about 3 kg. – Yeah. It’s too…
– โ€ฆbike for aโ€ฆ – Okay, great. With the bike. Thank you
very much! – Merci beaucoup! – Merci beaucoup! – And drive safely. – Thank you. – I’m going… You said
I can go off duty right now. – Okay. Thank you! – You know, I was sitting
having a chat with my wife when I saw… – You saw my thing. – Yes,
and I saw, of course, this. But then you were up on the hill. – Yeah. Yeah, because with the rain,
I could not watch my phone. So I missed my guesthouse,
which is somewhere this way. – Have a nice rest of your night.
– Thank you very much! Bye-bye. – Goodbye!
– Thank you very much. See you tomorrow!
– See you! – Hopla. Oh my god! This is incredible. What a character!
So that’s the beautiful church. I’m glad I missed the guesthouse
because that was incredible. I should have given him something,
but I don’t know. I just… I’ll give it tomorrow. I just
don’t like to leave my bike like this. So that’s my guesthouse here. Let’s see how it works.
Ah, f*/*/*ing hell. Hello! – How are you?
– Good. How are you? – Okay. The last time I saw you,
you were in Namibia. – Yeah. – How many? – Yeah, I have
some delay in my videos. – Oh, man. I enjoy your stuff, man.
I always watch your content. – Great. Great. – Are you just passing through
or…? – Yeah. No, I booked here. – For how many days? – Just for one night.
I’m going to Cape Agulhas. – Oh, man. Flip! You must do coffee or something
before you leave. – Maybe. Tomorrow I have to go
to this guy already. – What time are you going
for coffee? – I don’t know. I’ll see because I have breakfast
here. – I have to buy you a coffee. I always watch your stuff
fromโ€ฆ – That’s awesome, man. – The whole of Africa
has been watching you and… Keep it up, man. – Thank you.
– Oh, it’s nice to see you. I can’t believe I saw you in person.
– Yeah, you’re lucky somehow. Yeah. – You take care, Yves.
– Thank you! So how do I get into, into this guesthouse now? Hello, hello! – Are you riding
to the tip? – Yes! – Now? – No, tomorrow. – Tomorrow?
– Today I’m finishing here. – Okay, cool! You’re staying
there. Nice! – Okay. Let’s try down here. Hello! I think that’s the guesthouse. Let’s lock the bike and go try to find
the reception or something like that. Oh my god! Hello. Hopla! Hello. – Come in! Hi! – Hi!
The guesthouse is here? Yes, it’s me. – Yes, yes. – Yes.
– Yeah, hello. – Nice to meet you. – And you too. Welcome! – Thank you!
– Yeah. Are you traveling alone? – Yes, I’m alone. I am on
this bicycle- tricycle. – Oh, fantastic. We can put it
inside for you tonight. – Fantastic. – No problem. – Perfect. Awesome.
– No problem. Come inside! – Great, thank you. – Amazing! So this is your room. – Okay. Ah,
wow. Wow! Oh, it’s beautiful. Okay. – There we go. There
we go. – Very nice. Amazing. – You can even watch your bicycle.
Yeah, I can watch it from here. Yeah. Fantastic. – Great! – Yeah.
And there’s a fridge over there. – Okay. – With some fresh milk
in it. There’s tea, coffee. – Okay. – And some biscuits. – Perfect! – South African rusks,
which you might know. – Oh, yes. I know the… Yeah,
yeah. – Yeah, yeah, yeah. – It’s been some time. If you’re really
interested in TV, we’ve got Netflix and… – Ah, okay. Okay. – And you can…
I’m sure you know how it all works. – Okay. Yeah, yeah. It’s fine.
– Wi-Fi password. – Okay. Awesome. – And… – Wow,
nice. Very nice. – There we go. So where have you come from today?
– Today, Hermanus. – Oh, Hermanus. – Hermanus. Yeah, yeah. – Yeah, yeah,
yeah. – Not so far. Yeah. – Fantastic. – A bit rainy there. – Interesting vehicle
you’ve got there. – It’s quite funny. It’s electric, so it’s… – Is it?
– Yeah, yeah, yeah. – Okay. – But you’re still outside…
– Do you need to charge it? – Yes, but I guess…
Well, you have electricity. So I’ll find… – No, we will. – So…
But I can remove the battery. – Oh, I see. Okay, okay,
okay. Cool. – Yeah, I don’t… I can charge it here in the room. Yeah. – Shall I go and open up
the shed for you now? Do you wanna put it in and bring
the stuff up? – Maybe I need to… I’ll remove the bags first. – That’s fine.
– And then I can find you afterwards. – Not a problem. We’re here.
– Perfect! Thank you very much! – I mean, you’re very French.
– Yes, in some way. – So… I mean, you are from France.
– Yeah, yeah. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, yeah. I’m from France. Yeah. – Great! My wife’s first language
is French. – Oh, really? – Yeah, yeah, but born in South Africa.
Her parents were both born in Egypt. – Ah! – And… – It’s true.
The high society… – In Egypt. – …in Egypt used to speak French. – That was the common language
of the Europeans. – It’s very true. Yeah. – Yeah, yeah, yeah. – Yeah.
That has changed so much actually. – Yeah, yeah, yeah. – But it’s… One of the most famous
French-speaking singers, of the ’60s-70s was actually Egyptian. – Yeah, yeah. – Yeah, yeah. – Very… – Really nice bathroom.
Very, very clean. Beautiful. I love the room. That’s how
my wet second-to-last day, on the way south in Africa finishes: in a beautiful room
in a very friendly town. – That’s a good girl. What is AZUB?
– It’s the brand of the bike. – Okay, okay. – You see, I have it
here. – Oh, yes. Oh, yes. – It’s Czech. – Czech? – Yeah. Otherwise…
– And how many kilometers? – 20,000. – 20,000 so far. – So it’s getting… – That’s amazing! That’s amazing. – So I was
in Sudan before the war actually. – Oh, were you? – Cuz it took me
a long time to cross Ethiopia actually. – Yeah, yeah. – To finish the journey,
Cairo to Cape Town, I’m probably the last one arriving
for quite a long time because… – Yeah. You just can’t…
– Because I’m very slow. – Yeah. – So all the ones that were
after me but still passed [Sudan] before the war overtook me. – Yeah, yeah. – And after the war
started, since then, the route isโ€ฆ Cairo to Cape Town is…
– Yeah. – …completely closed. You cannot do it anymore.
– It’s that affecting?! – Oh, yeah. Sudan is completely closed.
You cannot… – Yeah. – I think now you cannot even get
a tourist visa. – Yeah, yeah. – At some point, you could
still get a tourist visa, because the rebels would control
only Khartoum and around. You could go around, I think. And the government
was still controlling… But I think the rebels
then expanded slowly where… And so I think…- – Warlords.
– Now you just can’t go anywhere. – It’s the warlords. They run the country.
– Yeah, yeah. I mean, now it’s… – When you hear that warlords
are building a port on the coast… – They’re building a port in Sudan?
– Well, in Sudan. Yeah, yeah, yeah. A friend of ours’ brother was working,
building that port. – Oh, really? – But it’s all warlords.
It’s all blood money. It’s… – Ah, it’s insane. It’s horrible.
– It’s terrible! – It’s… The people are really nice
in Sudan. – Yeah. – It’s really horrible. – Yeah,
you know… – And it’s just two guys. It’s just guys fighting
for money. – Exactly. – And they kill millions of people
just for them to have money. – No, it’s just money. – It’s…
– It doesn’t make much sense. – It doesn’t make any sense. Yeah. – Let’s get a… Do you wanna go
and stand there, Maya? Come on. Awesome. And then…
– Morning, my friends! Oh, my keys. It was
very nice to stay here. Your guesthouse is really, really nice.
The breakfast was amazing. The house is beautiful.
The room is fantastic. So, thank you very much
for hosting me as well! – Thank you very much! And we
wish you well and a safe journey. I don’t know how long
it’s gonna take you, but go well and thank you. – It’s gonna take me a few years.
Yeah. – And away he goes. All the best. – Bye-bye. – Bye-bye! Thank you
very much! Yeah. – Cheers! – Bye-bye! Hopla. Let’s go, guys. – Bye-bye! – Bye-bye! This guesthouse is awesome.
Fantastic. So we are in Napier. The first mission of the day
is to try to escape from the military guy, the military museum that is not a museum. Let’s go, let’s go! It’s here! Let’s go. I don’t have time. Bye-bye! The people
are so friendly here. Let’s go, guys! I can’t believe
I’m going! This is… – Yeah. Go, go! – Hello! Go, go. Yes! This is the last ride for this way south. The final ride to the southern tip
of Africa. 50 km. Yes, yes! 50 km to Cape Agulhas.
Let’s go, guys. Hello! Oh, wow. Cricket. It’s true. It’s a cricket country as well here.
Hello! – Hello! – Hello, lekker. – Lekker. Yeah. – Hello! – Hello! – I just wanted to…
– I found a colleague there. How are you? – I’m good. Yourself? – Very good. Yeah. – It doesn’t work
anymore. – Ah? – How’s your trip going? – Yeah, very well. Yeah. – Oh, good. – Almost at the end. – Oh,
I’m at the very beginning. – Okay. You started from Agulhas
then. – Cape Town. – Cape Town? Okay. – Yeah, yeah. You? – I started
from France. – From France? Oh, jeez! – Yeah. – I was waiting for it โ€”
and I’m gone. – Where are you going? – I’m just going like Lesotho and then…
– Ah, okay. – โ€ฆI’m back again. – Okay. – Just a couple of months. – Okay, nice.
– But France, man! So you went to… – It’s electric. It’s easier than you. – Yeah, a little bit. But it’s
still a lot of work. – Yeah, yeah. It’s still a lot of work. Yeah, yeah.
– Yeah. I like your panniers. – Yeah. – Yeah, I’ve got the red ones.
– You’ve got the… Oh, Ortlieb as well. Yeah. – They’re smaller. Those are
the front and the back. Yeah. – Hello! – Hello! – Hello. – How are you?
– Nice. We saw you on TikTok. – You saw me on TikTok?
– Yeah. – Oh, nice. Yeah. It’s me. – From overseas, yeah?
– Yeah, yeah, yeah. – Yeah, we saw… – From France. – We saw you on TikTok.
– Nice. – How is it going? – Awesome. – I’m not on TikTok. – Have a nice day. – Bye! – Bye-bye! So you’re going
to Lesotho? – Yeah, just Lesotho. – The mountains. You’re South African
then or…? – No. – No? – I’m Californian. – Oh, okay, okay. – Yeah, yeah.
– Nice. – But I wanna see South Africa. So I figured I’d just…
– Okay. – …bike around a bit. – Yeah, the Western Cape
is really nice, really pleasant. – Yeah? Yeah. So far,
I’ve been on the coast. But yeah, I’m heading
into the mountains now. So… – Okay. – …getting away, getting
off the coast. But you’re on TikTok. That’s cool. – Yeah. Yeah, I make a living
from YouTube actually. – Oh, sweet. Make a living out of it. – Yeah. – Hell, yeah. – Yeah. – It’s
a really nice rig you’ve got. – Yeah, yeah. – It’s very comfortable.
Yeah. – Yeah, yeah. – I like it very much. Yeah. – It looks comfy, like that…
– Yeah, it’s comfy. – I’ve been in… – โ€ฆas a problem. – I rode one
in Germany before. – Okay. – And it was really nice. – Okay.
– And it was an electric assist. – Okay. – Electric, but… Yeah. – Okay,
so it’s… – So it’s every couple… You feel it. Yeah. – Well, it’s
the same for me. – Yeah. Yeah, yeah. – It’s also assisted. It’s not… – Yeah,
it’s not a button. – It’s not a button. – And I thought that was… – Yeah.
– It made the hills better. – Yes. Yeah, exactly. – It was like, “Oh,
this isn’t that bad.” – Yeah, yeah. – You don’t have to go all the way down
to the lowest gear. – Exactly. Yeah. – You can be like, “Oh, I could keep it
in the middle.” – Yeah. Yeah. If you wanna push it,
you can… Yeah. – Yeah, yeah. Then the problem is
if you push it too much, then it… On the hills, it drains the battery
super fast. – Oh, okay. – So, I still go very slow
because otherwise, the battery goes… – Goes too fast. – …goes down too fast. Yeah. Yeah. – Do you charge it
with solar every day or…? – No. Solar โ€” you need a big panel. I would need something
like one meter long probably. – Oh, jeez. Yeah. – So it’s not…
I’m glad I’m not on a… Especially this. I can’t handle… – This isn’t too bad.
– Yeah, it looks like it’s a nice saddle. – Every hour and a half, I get off
and I stay for like… – Oh, yeah? – โ€ฆ20 minutes, stretch. – Yeah.
– So then I’m not on it… – Okay. – …like more than an hour
and a half at one time. – Okay, yeah. – So that helps. But the first…
This is my first week. So, it’s very… – At the beginning,
it’s hard. Yeah, yeah. – Yeah. In a couple of weeks, it’s not. – Then you don’t feel it. Yeah.
– You don’t feel it anymore. – Because your body is used to it.
– But right now… I felt it yesterday. I was like, “Oh, man.” – Oh, shit. – When I sat down on something flat,
it felt weird like, “Urgh.” – Yeah. Yeah. – So you’re gonna make it to the end
today. – Yeah, today I just… I don’t know. It’s
like 30-35 km and I’m done. You came from there today
or not? – I came from the town. I just did 20 miles. – Yeah,
it’s… – You’ll get there early. – It’s downhill and flat. So it
should be… – It’s really flat. When you… – Yeah, I’ve seen.
I was surprised like… – When you pass the 43, turn off,
and you’re only on the 619… – Yeah. – It’s… – Totally flat.
– โ€ฆsuper flat. – Okay. – Oh, man. I was averaging like 16 miles
an hour. – 16? Ah, wow! – Yeah. Just like cruise it, not even try… – Okay. – …and just like “la-la-la-
la-la”. – Nice. – Listen to a podcast. – Okay, nice. – Not even pushing hard. So yeah, it’s really flat
once you get around there as well. – Okay, how many kilos do you have?
– Too much. I don’t even know this. – Yeah, everyone says, “Too much.”
– I don’t know what it is, but… – Everyone I…
– It changes cuz I started… This is probably about four
liters of water. – Yeah. – And then I got my food.
I just bought a whole bunch of food. – Yeah. – So I’ve got my oatmeal
and I’ve got my cheese and some meat. And I’ve got my pot, my stove.
I’ve got a stove that runs on… – Yeah. – …the petrol. So
it’s hard to pick up. – Okay. – So, I don’t know the exact weight,
but it’s more than I want. Yeah. – Okay. – And I have extra tubes
and tread and all that stuff. – Okay. – Yeah, it’s cuz you can’t find
this size in… – Oh, in here? – In this country. – Ah, it’s what?
It’s like a 28 or…? – It’s a 29. Yeah. – Oh, 29-inch. Okay.
– 2.2. – Nice. – So, it’s… I just got them for this trip
cuz I know I’m gonna do a lot of gravel. – Okay. – So I wanted something fatter,
something easier on the gravel. – Okay. – And so far, it’s a little slower
on the pavement than I’m used to. But the gravel is great. It’s… Yeah.
– So, it’s worth this. – So perfect, yeah. Yeah, it looks like it’s a… Yeah,
it looks like a nice bike as well. – I like it. – Very nice. – I’ve done
the Southern Tier in the US on this. – Okay. – So that was cool.
– Okay. – Biking from coast to coast. – From coast to coast? – Yeah,
it’s 3,000 miles. – Wow! – Yeah. – On the southern part? – It’s
on the… Yeah, it’s the Southern Tier. – Yeah, wow. – So it goes from San Diego
to Jacksonville, Florida. – Oh, okay. – But I went all the way to Orlando
with a partner of mine. – Okay. – So yeah, this bike has made it. Not the tires, but this handlebar
of this bike, you know… This thing that I’ve had…
– It’s made for this long trip. – It’s made for it. Yeah.
These were the ones… – Beautiful. – …I had on that trip. – Okay. – These are new. But these are
the ones I’ve had on the trip. – Okay. – So they’ve lasted a long time.
– How long did it take you? – Three months. – Three months?
– 3,000 miles cuz we were… I had a partner at the time,
and we weren’t in a hurry. – Okay, yeah. – We stopped
to do a lot of stuff. Most people try to do it, I think,
in like two months. – Okay. – It is totally doable. – Okay. – But we were only averaging
70-80 mile days. – 70-80 miles a day. Okay. Well, it’s still… – Yeah. It’s
a lot of hills at the beginning, but… Up until Texas. – And then after, it’s
all flat. – Then it’s very flat. Yeah. Okay. – It’s pretty flat. Yeah.
– Pretty… Yeah, not all flat. But yeah. – East of Austin. Like a day
or two past Austin, it’s flat. – Okay, cuz the Appalachian on the…
They don’t reach the southern part, no? – No, not… – And like… Yeah.
– Cuz you’re on the coast. – Yeah. Oh, yeah. – You end up
being on the 10, which is like… We’re near the 10,
so New Orleans and stuff, and the whole of Florida is so… – Yeah, it’s just all flat. Yeah.
– Just little tiny hills. – Yeah. – This is so easy. – Yeah, yeah. Yeah, the US is a good playground,
I guess, as well for bike touring. Yeah. – Oh, yeah. You can bike the whole thing
in a circle. – You could go around. Yeah. – But in the summer, you could do it.
In the winter, there’s only the… – Only the southern part. – You could do
the West cuz it rains. – Oh, the coast. Yeah, yeah. – Yeah,
but the East I wouldn’t do. And then the North I wouldn’t do.
– Yeah, yeah, because… Yeah. – But… – Yeah. – I’m gonna have to get a…
– Awesome! – …picture of you, all right? – Yeah, yeah, yeah. Of course, yeah. – So, cuz everyone thinks I’m crazy,
of course. They don’t realizeโ€ฆ – Oh, yeah. Well, there is…
– There are other people that do it. You know? Cuz everyone’s like… – There is always someone
crazier than you anyway. – Oh, there always is. – F*/*/*ing hell.
– Yeah, yeah. I’ve met a couple of people. I was down in South America
two years ago, backpacking. – Yeah. – I met a guy who did
from Egypt all the way down to… – Yeah. – …South Africa. – Yeah. – And it took him a year, a year plus,
and… Yeah, he loved it. He saidโ€ฆ – Yeah. – โ€ฆEgypt was the only scary part. – Egypt… I mean, Egypt like…
Yeah, Egypt is crazy. – Yeah. – Like, for some reason, the police
don’t like foreigners to ride bicycles. – Yeah, so they were following.
– So they go after you. So if you… Actually, I did not really… I did not cycle most of it.
– Yeah. – Because if… It’s doable, but the only way
to do it is to tell the police, “I’m gonna leave
at 9 o’clock in the morning,” because they wanna follow you. And then, you leave at 5 o’clock
in the morning so you escape from them. Then, the next checkpoint
will catch you and they will tell you, “No, you cannot ride,” but you
still ride because actually you can. And then they’ll follow you, and the next day, you escape
again from them. So you have to play
this cat and mouse game… – Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
– …all the time, but it… – Yeah, he said he didn’t like it
and that was the only bad part. – And for… – I’ll let you go. – Yeah.
– Safe travels! – You too, man. Yeah. – Yeah. – Nice meeting you,
man! – Congratulations! I’ll be driving for you. – Thank you
very much! Yeah. And enjoy! – Oh, I will. – Okay. – Cheers!
– Bye-bye! Cheers, man! So here we do the last turn
of the journey, guys. And we go… We turn right. Hello! We turn right to head south for the last time
in a very, very long time. – Hello! – Hello! – Hello! – Hello! Hello! Hello! Hello! Ah, beautiful dead tree. Wow! 10 km to go! Whoa! 10 last kilometers
heading south. Struisbaai! Some marks of some burning tires
from the township here. Hello! – Hello! – Hello, hello, hello! – What a beautiful church! Wow. Hello! I don’t know. When I see black people, I assume they might be Xhosa
but can’t be sure. Hello! – Hey, sir! – And a tourist shop
there. Hello! – Hello! No, I continue. I have a bit of time.
Let’s go to see them. I love those houses. They are so cool. Hello! – I’m fine. And you?
– How are you? – And you? Nice bike. – Nice bike. Yes! – Whoa, whoa,
whoa, whoa! Yo, yo, yo, yo. – What do you do? – Hello! – Whoa!
– And these ones โ€” the Struisbaai houses. – Beautiful houses. Yeah.
– It’s an original house. It’s a fisherman’s house.
– Fisherman’s houses from here? – Yeah, from here. It’s original.
In this one, the door is closed. And you just open it, and the fish.
There are peopleโ€ฆ – Very nice. – …inside. My people are sleeping.
Yo, yo, yo. – It’s very nice. For how much do you sell them? – For the small one… And you can come
look. This one is 350. There’s… Okay, come on. I want to take a photo
of this bike. – You want to take a photo. Yeah, you can take a photo. – Oh, yo. – I also like the bike.
– Hello! You like the bike? – Okay, this one โ€” the small one. – Yeah. Do you have something
smaller? Okay, I… – Because… – Hello, my name is Yodi.
– Hello, my name is Yves. – Yves. – Your name is? – Yodi. – Yodi, nice
to meet you. – Is that a camera? – Yes, this is a camera. – A GoPro
something. – Yes, exactly. Yeah. – Can I take a photo? – From… – Yes. – Can you take
a photo? Take a photo. – From where did you drive
with this now? – From France. Oh, now from… – Cape Town?
– Napier. – Napier? – Yeah. – Yo, take a photo. – That’s not far. – Take a photo. Come to this side.
– From Napier till here? – Yeah, yeah, yeah. This morning.
– Yeah. – Yeah. – You take a photo. I want you to take this. What a nice photo! – Nice photo.
– Welcome! Take one photo. Come to this side again.
And the bike machine. – And the bike. – Wow, wow, wow.
And this is #1. This one. – #1. Yes. – It is #1. – Okay. – This is a nice one. This house and this one and this one,
they… – Like this one. It’s the same. Yeah. – And the fish here. This one
is 200. – 200 โ€” this one. – It’s 250. – Let’s see. – And this one… – That side you must come to look
when you finish here. – Oh, yeah. Okay, I just… I can take something
small, but… – A small one. Yeah, you can… – Can you try
andโ€ฆ? – This one is Struisbaai. – You have the beautiful…
– Yeah, this one โ€” with a windmill. – It’s beautiful. Yeah. – There are
people. And this one… – Yeah, yeah. – Let me show you this one. – Yeah,
just show me because I can’t buy, but… – In this one, you have electricity.
You put it on. – Ah, okay. – You put it on. – Very nice!
– And this one โ€” with the sunroof. – Electricity. Oh! – Yeah, the sunroof.
– So what works with electricity? – It works… It lights the inside.
– Oh, there’s a light inside. – Light inside. – Oh, okay.
– Over the charger, you put it on. – Okay. Very nice. – This one
and the fish. – Beautiful. – And this one โ€” no light.
And this one โ€” Cape Agulhas. And this one โ€” light. The light…
– This one โ€” light. – Very nice. – And this one. – Do you have
only this wind thing? Without the house? – Only
that one, without the house. – Without the house? – I make it,
but it’s gone. It’s sold now. – Ah, okay. Okay. – When…
I’ll make it for you. How manyโ€ฆ? When are you coming back?
– No, I’ll just stay a few days here. – But I’ll make it for you…
– How long does it take to make? – When do you go back? Maybe…
– Maybe on Tuesday. – Tuesday. – On Tuesday, I’m here. I’ll make it
maybe tomorrow or Monday. – For how much do you sell only this?
– It’s 80 Rand. I make it very small. – 80 Rand? – 80 Rand, 100 soon.
– Okay. – Are you recording? – Yes. – Yeah. – It’s easier if I just take
a house. – Or this one. And I’ll take out this one. Okay.
This one is easy. I’ll take out… – You can take out this one?
– I’ll give you this one. – You’re sure? – But this one is easy. Easy. This one
I take out. I take this one. Here. – Oh, really? – Yeah, I put it
here. This one. But this one… I’ll give you this one for this size… I’ll give you… If you take this one
and the house. – And the house? – I can take out this one and the house
or the fish and give you… – Maybe. So… The small house plus this one,
for how much do you give me? – I’ll give it to you for 280.
I can give you… – 280? – Yeah, I’ll give it to you for 80 Rand,
this one. – Okay. – It is 100. I could give you 80 Rand. It’s easy. I can take it out here,
and I’ll make another one. – Okay, okay. – And give this one. – Okay. If you can remove this one,
it’s okay for me. – Yeah. – Okay. – Yeah, okay. – While he’s removing,
come here. – Okay, I’m coming now. I’m coming now. – Okay, okay,
okay. – My daughter started this. This idea started. – Okay.
– My daughter is matric next year. So, what she wants
for the matric farewell is expensive. So she started with the idea… – Okay. – …during the year,
picking up shells… – Okay. – …to sell on this holiday
for her matric farewell next year. – Okay. – So, that is key chains. – Okay.
– Every single shell we picked up… – From the beach. – Yeah,
with our own hands. – Okay. – I just started today.
– Okay. – So just key chains. These are in resin. Look here. It’s…
You can’t… It doesn’t break easily. – Okay. Okay. – Do you know resin,
epoxy? – Resin? Ah, okay, okay. Yeah. – Yeah. – It’s… Yeah, yeah. – But it’s not a clear-clear one because she got it donated
by the people that make boats. – Okay. – So it’s not the art resin. But she didn’t have any capital
to buy equipment. – Ah, okay, okay. – And she tries to… – I got it. Yeah.
– …to recycle. Like… – Okay, okay. It’s recycled resin. – Yeah, this…
– But just if I take a small thing. How much is this? – Those
are 50 Rand. – And this is for… This is how you put it. – Yeah.
– This is not for the ears, no? – No, no. No, it’s for keys.
– Oh, it’s a key holder? – Yeah. – Okay, okay. – Or if you wanna put it
on a necklace. It doesn’t matter. – Okay, okay, okay. Okay. I’ll take one,
just one like this. – Okay. – If it’s… – Like that. – Okay. – Okay. – I’ll
just… Okay. I’ll just look for money. – Oh my baby, you’re the first customer. Thank you! – I am your very first
customer ever? – Ever. – Wow! That’s good. Okay. That’s a good start then! – So,
it’s like automatic. I mean, like… – It’s electric. – Electric bike?
– So it’s assisted. It’s a little bit… – Okay, so then Napier isn’t
that far. – It’s a little bit easier. Yeah, yeah, yeah. It’s a little bit…
– Then Napier is not that far. – It’s a little bit easier
then. – โ€ฆlike this. – There you go! – I’m very shy now.
– For you. – Oh, okay. Thanks so much. – And check. You’re very shy. – Yeah.
– Oh, with the… You’re camera-shy. – Just a little bit. – There you go.
– Okay. Thank you! – Thank you! Enjoy your trip! And please,
drive safely. – Yes. – You must take your key chain. – I must take my key chain.
Yes. I’ll take this one. – You took a nice photo.
Yeah, a nice photo. – And you give me this one
and a house. – You can choose. – With the fish is nice. Yeah.
– The house that has fish. – Fish is nice. – Yes, perfect. – This one. – Okay,
I need to store it. – The stories. Okay. – Ah, you want to take a photo
with me? – Yeah, I want to take photos. I like photos and… – With me and this?
Okay. – Yeah, he’d like some promoting. – Okay, it’s good. Yeah.
– You must promote me as well. – Take a nice… Go there. Nice photo,
please. – Yes. – Nice photo. Welcome! – Thank you very much! Yeah.
– Thanks. Thank you very much. Thanks for supporting my business.
– Thapelo! – You’re welcome! – Thanks for supporting my business. – It’s good. You do a good job.
– Thapelo! – Yes. – You do good work. – And my name is Thapelo.
– Thapelo? – It’s Thapelo. – Nice to meet you. My name
is Yves. – And there’s a… Wow! – Have a look. – Okay, nice. – It’s easy. Take out… It’s easy.
Take it out like this and like this. – Oh, fantastic. – Yeah, yeah. – So
it’s gonna be easier to transport. Okay. – Easy. Yeah. For this one.
– Mine is just, “Put me around the keys.” – Yes. – And please, have a safe drive. – I’ll just leave it like this open,
so it doesn’t… It’s not gonna rain. – Have a safe drive and… – Okay.
– Thank you very much! Yes. – Enjoy your holiday. – Thank you
very much! Yeah. It was nice. That’s a nice welcome to…
– Thank you. – Okay. – …Struis… Thank you very much! – Okay, okay.
Nice one. From Struisbaai, Thapelo. – From Struisbaai. – From Struisbaai,
Thapelo. – So, Thapelo. Just at the entry of Struisbaai.
– Yeah, Struisbaai. Struisbaai. For making small houses,
original houses. Thanks very much for the support.
Nice traveling. Goodbye. – Beautiful. – Okay. – Thank you very much,
Thapelo! Yeah. – Okay, thanks. – Okay, bye-bye. – Okay, bye. – Thank you
very much! Yeah. – Merci. – Well… – Bye-bye! – Bye-bye! Guys, can you believe it?
This is the Indian Ocean. Finally, we get to see the Indian Ocean
on this journey. Hello! The Indian Ocean.
Oh my god. This is crazy. Ebike Trail Blazers. That’s quite funny. I guess
I am an e-bike trailblazer. Hello! – Okay. – It’s a beach resort,
a seaside beach resort, it seems. Hello. Hello! – Bike, bike,
bike. – Yeah! – Hello. Yes, yes. – It’sโ€ฆ Hi,
man. – Thank you! Different. – Yeah, it is different. Go, go! – Thank you! Have
a good day. – Thank you! – Hello. Hello! Thank you. The Cape of the Needles! Here we are! Cape Agulhas, which means
Cape of the Needles in Portuguese. In French, we call it
“le cap des Aiguilles”. This is unreal, insane. I need to push a little bit. Yeah. – Yo! – Yes. Let’s go to the end of the road, guys,
the very end of the road. It’s just here. Oh my god. We are at the end of the road. There is no way. There is
nowhere more south in Africa. Wow! On the left, the Indian Ocean.
On the right, the South Atlantic. Can you take a photo of me,
please? – Yes. – Thank you. Thank you very much. Hopla.
Thank you. – My pleasure. – So where are you really…?
Where are you from? – France. – Oh, I see. Ah, so you ride
from Struisbaai with this bike or…? – From France with this bike. – All
the way? – Yeah. – Through Africa? – Yeah. – You’ve got guts, eh?
You can’t go any further now. – No, that’s the end
of the road. Yeah. – Yeah. – Now you have to go back and fly
back or… – I’m gonna take some rest. But I’m gonna ride back via West Africa.
Yeah. I came on the east side. I’m gonna ride on the…
– Up the west side. – Yeah. – Okay then. Good luck.
– Thank you! – Okay, pleasure. – And here you have a big map of Africa
with the elevation included, but… As someone who loves geography,
it’s quite shocking. This map is quite shocking to me. I don’t know; I guess someone
from Africa did it, but obviously, someone who doesn’t know the geography
of Africa; it’s crazy. So here you have South Africa.
Here you have the Drakensberg. That’s… On the map, it looks like it’s almost
the second highest mountain in Africa, which is very wrong, really not true. But okay, that looks correct somehow.
Then you go up where we went. So it’s all highlands. I guess
it’s somehow correctly represented. Well, it seems okay. Here you have
Lake Malawi. Here is the funny thing. I guess this is Kilimanjaro because it looks like the highest
mountain in this thing. So then, if this is Kilimanjaro,
that’s probably Mount Kenya. Then you have this thing. Very,
very strange because as far as I know… Ah, no. It’s Mount… Ah, no. This is
Mount… Ah, there is Mount Meru. So that’s probably Mount Meru.
Okay, so that’s the volcanoes. That’s my bad. That’s
the volcanoes in Kenya, Tanzania. The highest mountain in Africa. So that makes sense. But then
there is the first very shocking thing. So there you have Lake Victoria.
And behind, you have Lake Tanganyika. So here, you have Lake Victoria.
And here, you have Lake Tanganyika. And here, it’s Uganda.
All this region is Uganda. And this there, it’s the Congo River. And between Uganda here
and the Congo River, there are the Rwenzori Mountains,
the Rwenzori mountain range, which is the highest
mountain range in Africa. And somehow, it vanished.
It’s not here, disappeared. Then you go up this way. So you have the Horn of Africa,
and this way โ€” Ethiopia. And in Ethiopia, in northern Ethiopia,
all the highlands in Ethiopia are 2,000 m, a bit higher even than 2,000 m,
and they look much lower. But especially in northern Ethiopia,
you have the Simien Mountains, which go up to 4,000 something meters,
which is the second highest… 4,500 or 4,600 m, which is the second
highest mountain range in Africa and which has also disappeared somehow. So the two highest mountain ranges
in Africa have disappeared. Strange geography. And here is where I finish
my adventure southwards. You see, the trike
is getting ready to be stored, in an unknown location,
hidden somewhere in a… Somewhere. I’ll not tell you where. This is my beautiful room. The…
Yeah, some editing is going on. Nice big bed. All my stuff. A nice clean toilet, a beautiful bathroom,
a shower, which I like very much. It’s all clean. Oh, hello! – Ah,
you waited for me. – How are you? – I’m fine. Thank you. – Very good.
Yeah. – So are you first going to eat? – I went to eat just now.
I went to have fish and chips. – So we’ll see you in half an hour.
– Okay. – Good. – Perfect. – Great. – So that’s the beautiful apartment. You see, what I love here
in this guesthouse is that I can sit here or I can eat here and just watch
the sea at the same time. Ah, man. South Africa is just so different
from what people tell you, and actually what I believed
also before. A little paradise. – Sorry? – We still have to use caves.
You know, we have the caves. – Oh, yeah, yeah. – Under the house,
so it’s cooler. – Yeah, it’s… – And so you keep the wine. – We don’t have that. – Yes,
yes, yeah. – We have the fridge. – Yeah. So you put it a little bit
in the fridge, and then it’s… – Yeah. I mean that… – So
to finish, we’ve been invited for… Look at the beautiful place! We’ve been invited for some wine. – Any place. – Any place? Okay.
– Any place. – Thank you very much. I’ll… Thank you very… What’s
your name? – Hannes. – Hannes? Ah, yes. Hannes. Yeah. – Yes. Like Johannes in the Bible
without the “Jo” โ€” Hannes. – Ah? – I said, “Like in the Bible.”
– Like in the Bible? – Johannes. – Oh, Johannes. Okay.
– But it’s only the Hannes. – Okay. – “Jo” went away. – Okay. Your…
The two first letters just disappeared. – Yeah, yeah. – Okay. Awesome.
– This is a local wine from… – Okay. From around here? – Yeah.
Not very close, about 80 km from here. – 80 km. Okay. – And some droewors. – Droewors. I love droewors.
Yeah. – You like it? – Yes, yes. I like it very much.
– This guy makes it very nice. – Okay, so… Let’s try a droewors. – How is it? – It’s
very good. Yeah. Thank you. Thank you very much…
– Cheers. – …for the wine. South African life.

After my long padstal break, I resume my journey towards Napier. After riding through a beautiful hilly country, I arrive in Napier, in the Western Cape, in South Africa.
Because of the rain, I miss the guest house I booked and I meet a strange man, a man who has a military museum that is not a museum. He also fabricates beautiful chess pieces in reference to the most famous battles in human History. The visit of his strange eerie cave is pretty fascinating.
After this unexpected adventure, I find my guest house, it’s a wonderful old style room in a very cozy house. The owners are super friendly and are surprised to see a “real” French, as if the French were some kind of an endangered species.
The next day is my last ride South in Africa. I am super motivated and I quickly reach Struisbaai. On the way, I meet a friendly American cyclist. In Struisbaai, I buy some of the beautiful work of a local craftsman before finally reaching the end of Africa! I finally reached Cape Agulhas, the Southernmost point in Africa. This is the end of my journey South.

  1. I just did a massive tune up on a recumbent trike like yourโ€™s. Thought of you the whole time!

  2. Sudan war is NOT between two guys (then why is the UAE involved?). It is between the Sudan State (led by its army) and a rebellious military faction backed by the UAE.

  3. What a beautiful journey Ives, I followed and enjoyed every mile! Amazing! Take care, I wish you all the best. Look forward to your journey back north! LOVE FROM SOUTH AFRICA!! ๐Ÿ’Œ๐Ÿ’Œ๐Ÿ’Œ

  4. A MTN bike with semi slick 29" tires makes for a great long distance bike too. Better seat, more rugged tires and better upright handlebars saves your neck. The guy from California is having a great bike tour too…
I do up to 11,100 km's a year mostly on 4.5 x 27" fat bike tires, off road mainly. Car traffic I avoid, it can be bad as Yves can attest too, too many close calls!

  5. Congratulations ๐ŸŽ‰๐ŸŽ‰๐ŸŽ‰๐ŸŽ‰๐ŸŽ‰๐ŸŽ‰๐ŸŽ‰๐ŸŽ‰๐ŸŽ‰๐ŸŽ‰๐ŸŽ‰๐ŸŽ‰๐ŸŽ‰๐ŸŽ‰๐ŸŽ‰๐ŸŽ‰๐ŸŽ‰๐ŸŽ‰๐ŸŽ‰๐ŸŽ‰๐ŸŽ‰๐ŸŽ‰๐ŸŽ‰๐ŸŽ‰๐ŸŽ‰ Kino. What a joy!!!

Un peu la mรชme chose avec Itchy Boots qui รฉtait au Yรฉmen… Ces vidรฉos donnent de l'espoir pour un savoir-vivre tous ensembles. Merci!

  10. Congratz Yves, you're a true inspiration. Glad that you made it to the tip in one piece. Thanks for showcasing our beautiful country and its wonderful people. All the blessings for your future endeavors, just dont let us wait for too long๐Ÿ˜‚.

  11. Loving the vibe. South Africa is well developed the infrastructure is credible. Kenya government should learn from this

  12. Incredible, You did it! Itโ€™s been such a pleasure to watch you make this journey. Get some rest. Canโ€™t wait for the next chapter of this adventure.
