In the urban sprawl north of Tokyo is the Metropolitan Outer Area Underground Discharge Channel, one of the world’s largest underground stormwater discharge mechanisms, which plays a vital role in protecting Tokyo and its vicinity from inundation after heavy rain events.

People from Japan and abroad can tour the facility and witness an otherworldly sight — a cavernous, dimly lit space with towering pillars reminiscent of a temple in ancient Rome.
